Shepherd of the Valley to Host Job Fair Shepherd of the Valley will be hosting a job fair recruiting staff for all five of their locations as well as for their home health agency. Shepherd management will be available to interview and hire on site. The job fair will be Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley, located at 5525 Silica Road in Austintown. Spaghetti dinner benefit to be Oct. 3 There will be a benefit spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction in memory of Austintown resident and business owner Deanna Hosey on Oct. 3 from 12-4 p.m. at Four Mile Run Road Christian Church, located at 701 N. Four Mile Run Road in Austintown. Throughout the past decade, Hosey had dedicated herself and business, Something Unique Florist, to help the schools and many local charities and causes. The menu includes a spaghetti dinner with salad, bread and butter, dessert and beverage. The donation for the event is $8 for adults and $5 for Children. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the flower shop or Advanced Market-

Basket raffle to help dogs of Mahoning County Legacy Dog Rescue, Friends of Fido and Youngstown Dogs are hosting a huge basket raffle on Oct. 10 at Davidson’s Restaurant/Tavern, located at 3636 Canfield Road in Canfield, from 2–5 p.m. Eighty great baskets and gift cards will be raffled off. The winner will be drawn at 5 p.m. and need not be present. Legacy Dog Rescue, a non-profit organization, will host Bow Wow Ween on Oct. 3 in the Pogany Pavilion in the Austintown Park from noon - 2 p.m. All dogs are welcome to enter into the dog costume contest. Bow-Wow-Ween to be Oct. 3 Legacy Dog Rescue will sponsor Bow-Wow-Ween, a community Halloween event from 12-2 p.m. on Oct. 3 at Austintown Township Park in the Pogany Pavilion. To participate, dogs must be leashed at all times, up to date on vaccinations and handled by an adult. Among the features will be pet and child photos, refreshments, basket auction, games and goodies. For a $5 donation, a pet or child can be entered in all costume contests. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in a number of categories. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit group, save dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected, and place them into loving homes. Legacy Dog Rescue looking for shoes

Quarter Auction set for Oct. 17

Do you have any new or gently worn pairs of shoes that you aren’t wearing and that are just taking up space? Don’t throw them away. Legacy Dog Rescue would be happy to take them off your hands. They partnered with Wooftrax to raise some funds for their rescue, get the shoes to people that need them and avoid the shoes from getting into a landfill, which helps the environment. All the proceeds received for this event will go directly to funding one of Legacy Dog Rescue’s large community dog and cat food giveaways that they periodically have. They are planning to have one in late November around Thanksgiving. Last November, they gave away more than 6,500 pounds of dog and cat food. How it works is they collect gently worn or new shoes of all types and sizes. Then, Wooftrax picks-up the shoes from them. They refurbish the shoes and get them to people that really need them. Steak Fry on Sept. 26 The St. Vincent de Paul Society is having its annual Steak Fry on Sept. 26 at St. Christine Parish in Youngstown. The event helps to fund the dining hall that serves more than 108,000 meals annually and the food pantry that distributes more than 3,100 boxes annually.

Watkins graduates from Kent State Sarah Elizabeth Watkins of Austintown graduated in May from Kent State University with a Master of Science in nursing-Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Primary Care after obtaining National Board Certification from the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board in July. Emily Bevan, a 2015 Austintown Fitch High School graduate and current student at Youngstown State University, achieved one of her dreams in qualifying for the World Championship Horse Show in Louisville, KY. Bevan has been riding horses since the age of 9, working tow a rd her goa l for t he

championship. Bevan’s mother, Kim Bevan, said through Emily’s hard work and dedication she was able to achieve that goal. Emily and her horse, Grey, won a sixth place ribbon at the competition. “She does this on her own which makes this such an amazing accomplishment,” Kim Bevan said. “She had been recognized by a local trainer who asked her if

she would be interested in showing their Morgan horse in the equitation division at the Morgan World National Championship in Oklahoma City this October and, of course, she accepted.” Kim Bevan said she was incredibly proud of her daughter and wanted others to know hard work does pay off. “Anything is possible as long as you work for it and believe in yourself,” Kim Bevan said.

On Sept. 10, Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted Sprout Club, a weekly class dedicated to educating children from ages 3-5 about nature in the flourishing environment of the gardens. Bridget Beck instructed the class and said she enjoyed educating students about different aspects of nature. “We cover different topics — today’s topic is decomposers,” Beck said. However, Sprout Club is more than just learning about nature in a classroom. “We typically read a story, go outside for a walk and have a snack,” Beck said. “It’s a great way to have the kids connect with the gardens and learn about plants or something in nature.” See SPROUT, Page 7

Seth Welch, Austintown Fitch High School sophomore, sets the bar high for all boy scouts with his patriotic project inspired by his love of his country and admiration for armed forces of all kinds. “I know that this is the greatest country in the world and the biggest reason that we have the freedoms and opportunities that we do is because of our veterans,” Welch said. “The best way to convey this message was through my Eagle Scout project.” With the help of Chris Berni, head principal of Austintown Fitch High School, Welch is pushing forward to accomplish a lofty, yet admirable goal — to build a veteran’s memorial in front of Austintown Fitch High School. “It will be a jaw dropping testament to our armed services and emergency first responders that will consist of six steel silhouettes and six 20-25 foot flagpoles,” Welch said. Welch is asking for donations from the people of his community to help him achieve his goal. He is accepting donations at the main office of Austintown Fitch High School through Oct.

50th anniversary dinner honors the Waterbecks Mr., Mrs. Elias celebrate 50th anniversary Mr. and Mrs. William E. Elias of Austintown celebrated their 50th anniversary at a party July 5 at Marino’s Banquet Center. Their children are Holly Krohn of Austin, Texas, and Christopher Elias of Ypsilanti, Mich. They also have one grandchild. Mrs. Elias taught at Weathersfield Schools in Mineral Ridge and retired in 1998. Her husband taught in Youngstown City Schools and retired in 1995. He served in the U.S. Army as an officer at Fort Lewis, Wash., from 1964 to 1966. The couple are members of St. Joseph Church. The former Janet K. Terlecki and Mr. Elias were married June 26, 1965, at St. Christine Church in Youngstown.

Gera ld and Ella (Frease) Waterbeck of Youngstown recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a family dinner party at their home. Friends and family attended. The couple were married in a May 11, 1965, ceremony at Hillman Street Christian Church. The Waterbecks have five children, Keith (Deb) of Boardman, Rick (Jill) of Richmond, Ky., Pam of Youngstown, and Matt (Sarah) of Poland. A son, Greg, is deceased. They have seven grandchildren, Jerieka, Allyson, Kaleigh, Justin, Hayden, Gregory and Julian, who is deceased. They also have a great-grandchild, Maddix. Mr. Waterbeck retired as a master plumber from Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 396 after 33 years. Mrs. Waterbeck, a homemaker, also worked part time at Isaly’s. She is a member of the National 600 Bowling Club. The Waterbecks remain active in their community, church and charitable endeavors.

Party, renewal of vows honor Jones milestone Mr. and Mrs. James Jones of Poland celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a renewal of vows at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown on June 14 as well as with a family dinner and party hosted by their children and spouses in Columbus on June 20. Their children are Deborah and Sam Austrino of Westerville, Ohio, and Brian and Amy Jones of Bexley, Ohio. They have three grandchildren, Jacob Austrino and Sophia and Grace Jones. The former Mary Ann Mayesky and Mr. Jones were married June 26, 1965, at St. Stanislaus Church in Youngstown. The couple have been members of St. Luke Church in Boardman since 1979, and they participate in Holy Name of St. Luke’s and Donate Life. Mrs. Jones retired in 1997 from Kmart in Boardman. Mr. Jones was a structural engineer at Boardman Steel and retired in 2008. He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve.
