Legacy Dog Rescue looking for shoes Do you have any new or gently worn pairs of shoes that you aren’t wearing and that are just taking up space? Don’t throw them away. Legacy Dog Rescue would be happy to take them off your hands. They partnered with Wooftrax to raise some funds for their rescue, get the shoes to people that need them and avoid the shoes from getting into a landfill, which helps the environment. All the proceeds received for this event will go directly to funding one of Legacy Dog Rescue’s large community dog and cat food giveaways that they periodically have. They are planning to have one in late November around Thanksgiving. Last November, they gave away more than 6,500 pounds of dog and cat food. How it works is they collect gently worn or new shoes of all types and sizes. Then, Wooftrax picks-up the shoes from them. They refurbish the shoes and get them to people that really need them. Drop boxes are located at Family Video Austintown, Coco Moe’s Tanning on Elm Road, Howland Community Animal Hospital, Lil Paws, The Learning Dog Training Center, Spider Web Music and The Wellness Center in Niles. Email ldrcharity@gmail.com for more information.

Google visits Canfield Village Middle School By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The first stop of the Ohio Google Online Safety Roadshow was at Canfield Village Middle School on Sept. 14. The Google Online Safety Roadshow is an initiative developed to promote internet safety to help reduce the number of ‘empty threats’ made by students and teach them how to create the best version of themselves online. CVMS students crowded into the gym and were welcomed by U.S. Congressman Bill Johnson. Congressman Johnson then introduced the Google team of Joe and Nicole, who started things off with a true or false internet safety game for the students. The Google team then shared five safety tips the students could follow to make the internet a great place for them. Tip one was ‘Think before you share.’ The students were reminded that anything they post can be seen by anyone on the internet, including parents and future employers. Their posts can be forwarded, copied and found - by anyone. “What you share can take on a life of its own,” said Google Team Member Joe. Tip two was ‘Protect your stuff.’ The Google team focused on the strength of passwords and conveyed the importance of having a strong password. They told the students their passwords should have eight or
more characters, be a mix of letters, numbers and symbols and should be different for each site they visit. The Google team then had a password showdown between Congressman Johnson and two students to see who could come up with the strongest password. “Do not share your passwords with friends. There are lots of things to share with your friends, but your passwords are not one of them,” said Google Team Member Nicole. Tip three was ‘Know and use your settings.’ The students were encouraged to know the settings for each site they visit and to make sure they are correct. Tip four was ‘Avoid scams.’
The Google team told the students to be suspicious and to be careful and aware that scams are out there. Phishing was explained as trying to get personal information online through the use of scams and students were encouraged to not respond to any post or e-mail which requests personal information. “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is,” Nicole said. Tip five was ‘Be positive.’ Students were reminded that being positive is infectious and if they are positive online, it will encourage others to be also be positive. Students were also encouraged to report cruel and offensive posts they might come across online and were encouraged to be aware of reporting
tools. “I would like to challenge each and every one of you to post at least one positive message today,” Nicole said. The Google team closed their program with a short video of teens, who in the past, have shaped technology. “Here is a short video showing teens shaping technology and we hope that you, too, can help shape technology,” Joe said. Congressman Johnson had a few parting words for the students. “W hat you do today ca n change tomorrow. It is your turn to change the world. Be smart, be responsible and remember to protect yourselves,” Congressman Johnson said.

Sunrise of Senior Living of Poland danced the day away to the hawaiian beat at their annual luau on Aug. 13. Residents and staff got to celebrate this special event in the garden with food, fun and social interaction to the wonderful music of Steve Fazzini. Concierge Paula Baldwin said she appreciated the cooperating weather for their special event. “Today was a perfect day because it’s not too hot,” Baldwin said. Jacki Jones, Sunrise employee, agreed and said even the residents were noticing the warm
weather, lightening up not only the skies, but also their moods. “It’s great seeing everyone outside enjoying the fresh air – the weather cooperated for us,” Jones said. “I just love seeing the smile on everyone’s face. ...They love the band and they love the food – a few of them will even reminisce about a trip they took to Hawaii.” Jones said many of the retired service men talked about their stations in Hawaii with one another, as well. Judy Seiber, activities director, donned on a grass skirt and brought residents up to the middle of the garden to dance around to the Hawaiian music. “Residents love it when we dance around and make fools of
ourselves,” Seiber said. “It’s our first picnic outside [this year], so we’re excited about that.” The luau has been going on for quite some time at Sunrise – 17 years – and proves to be popular among the residents. “Everyone is out but about 10 people,” Jones said. “We’ve had this every year since we opened.” Baldwin said overall this was a happy place to be, not only for the residents, but also the employees. “Some of the girls that have worked here have been here for 17 years, that’s when it first opened and I think that says something for a facility to have long-term [employees],” Baldwin said.

Children were invited to come to the library and either pick out books or bring books of their own to challenge themselves and read for four straight hours. Many brought blankets and pillows to get comfortable while they carried out their challenge.
The librarians provided a variety of snacks and food items ranging from pizza and pepperoni rolls to chips and cookies. Librarian Allison Graf participated, as well as headed this event. “This is just such a fun program,” Graf said. Graf said she enjoyed seeing the students challenge themselves at the library – in a fun way.
“It’s reading and eating,” Graf said. “Kids come prepared to read for four hours and see if they have what it takes to be able to do it.” Students were welcomed to come and go as they pleased throughout the course of the four hours. Middle school football earns 34-0 victory The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade football team traveled to Boardman on Sept. 16 and came away with a 34-0 victory over Boardman Glenwood Middle School. Canfield’s defense came up big on Boardman’s first possession when Michael Minnenok sacked the Boardman signal caller deep in Spartan territory to force a punt. Canfield took possession at the home team’s 42-yard line and quickly moved down field on a 23-yard jaunt by tailback Logan Torok and Ethan Fletcher to Dominic Magliocca pass down to the Spartan 1. Fletcher bulled in from there for a 6-0 Canfield
lead. Canfield put together a 10 play 48-yard drive on their next possession capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run by Fletcher who then connected with Alex Schneider in the left corner of the end zone for the two point conversion and a 14-0 halftime lead. Canfield took the opening kickoff of the second half and moved 65-yards in eight plays with fullback Colin Hritz rumbling the final 15-yards to paydirt. Fletcher found tight end Minnenok in the end zone for the conversion to make 20-0. Canfield struck quickly following Torok’s strip and recovery of a Spartan ball carrier. Fletcher

Kidney Awareness Walk Oct. 4 Eastern Regiona l K idney Foundation is having its fifth annual Kidney Awareness Walk and Renal Family Picnic on Oct. 4 at the Canfield Fairgrounds. Proceeds will benefit local dialysis patients and transplant recipients who are in need of financial assistance. The walk and picnic will also serve to support the mission of educating the community so they can be aware of facts about kidney health, such as six out of 10 people are at risk for developing kidney disease. Meghan Hiland, president of the Eastern Regional Kidney Foundation and a renal social worker, said she sees first-hand the impact of this disease — not only patients, but on the family as well. This year, the foundation is walking in memory of Sylvia Riley, a former dialysis patient who was influential in the community. Registration for the walk is $25 and children under 10 are free. The picnic is free for all participants and their families.
Dialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients are free, but need to pre-register. Dialysis patients and transplant recipients receive a free T-shirt. Other walkers may purchase a shirt for $10 or may receive one if they bring in at least $100 in pledges. A $100 in pledges also gives them a chance to win the grand prize. T-shirts are only guaranteed for pre-registered walkers. The others will be given out on a first-come, first served basis. There will also be a Chinese auction and a chance to win $700 - $1,000 in a 50/50 drawing. All the money raised will stay in the community to help those in the Mahoning Valley. The Eastern Kidney Foundation would like to thank its diamond sponsor, The Kidney Group, and its Kidney Community Champion sponsor, Associates in Nephrology. If you would like to participate in the walk and picnic, you can register online at ERKidney.org or call 888-614-7313. Registration at the walk starts at 9 a.m., and the walk begins at 11 a.m.
