Legacy Dog Rescue looking for shoes Do you have any new or gently worn pairs of shoes that you aren’t wearing and that are just taking up space? Don’t throw them away. Legacy Dog Rescue would be happy to take them off your hands. They partnered with Wooftrax to raise some funds for their rescue, get the shoes to people that need them and avoid the shoes from getting into a landfill, which helps the environment. All the proceeds received for this event will go directly to funding one of Legacy Dog Rescue’s large community dog and cat food giveaways that they periodically have. They are planning to have one in late November around Thanksgiving. Last November, they gave away more than 6,500 pounds of dog and cat food. How it works is they collect gently worn or new shoes of all types and sizes. Then, Wooftrax picks-up the shoes from them. They refurbish the shoes and get them to people that really need them. Drop boxes are located at Family Video Austintown, Coco Moe’s Tanning on Elm Road, Howland Community Animal Hospital, Lil Paws, The Learning Dog Training Center, Spider Web Music and The Wellness Center in Niles. Email ldrcharity@gmail. com for more information.

Painting at Poland’s Shepherd of the Valley By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com

Poland’s Shepherd of the Valley hosts a weekly art and painting class thanks to the help of resident Louise Rade. Rade took on the role as leader of the class, having background in the field. Rade said although she wasn’t an instructor, she merely shared the techniques she learned through a watercolor class she took soon after retirement. Most of the residents who participated regularly said they were quite grateful for the opportunity to learn from their pseudo-instructor. Karen Miller said she recently moved to Shepherd of the Valley and came across this event on their calendar. Miller didn’t know what it was and wandered in to find out. She had to use Rade’s supplies who soon rectified the situation in helping her get what she needed. “Louise took me shopping and picked everything out — I didn’t know what to get,” Miller said. Carole Damschroder said she appreciated the skills and techniques Rade shared with everyone. “She’s truly wonderful and in-

Poland Union Elementary School and Dobbins Elementary School received a new and innovative edition to their academic families this year — a brand new computer class with their very first full-time, computer-dedicated instructor, Nick Blanch. Principal Michael Masucci said he was ecstatic that his fellow educators had finally come together to implement this new program. “For 21 years I’ve stood alongside teachers and administrators for a computer teacher for our youngest kids,” Masucci said. “Thanks to Mr. Janofa [superintendent for Poland School District] and our board [board of education], we got one.” Union gets the privilege of having Blanch three days a week while sharing with Dobbins Elementary two days a week. Blanch came from Poland Middle School, where he taught history since 2002. “I have always been a big fan of technology. I incorporated it into my history lessons at the middle school when I was a teacher there,” Blanch said. “I was always using technology side of it, but it wasn’t the actual class.” When it was decided that Poland schools were going to adopt an actual class dedicated to computers and teaching young students about technology, Blanch applied and excitedly accepted the position. “I wasn’t sure what to expect as to how far they would let me go and what they were going to let me do, but really the sky has been the limit,” Blanch said. Blanch said he was starting the youngest students out with computer basics, vocabulary and getting them familiar with the hardware. Older students were getting more preparation for STEM — science, technology, engineering and mechan-

ics — programs they would be a part of in the middle school. Kindergarten students started off the class by dragging their name to the “present” column on the smartboard. “It’s nice doing something with technology and having fun with it. It’s a positive experience and they are learning even more,” Blanch said. “I get them for a half hour and hit them with as much as I can in 30 minutes.” The excitement students show motivates Blanch to take them farther, also having fun every step of the way. “For me, to see their excitement and how accomplished they feel when they leave here just by learning one new thing is awesome — it’s a great feeling,” Blanch said. “What you go into education for is to get kids to learn and to get them excited about the subject you’re teaching. This is just something I love. Now that this is what I get to do everyday, all day long — teach technology — it’s excellent.”

Poland students named as AP Scholars Seventeen students from the Class of 2015 and three from the Class of 2016 at Poland Seminary High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the collegelevel AP (Advanced Placement) exams. The College Boa rd’s Advanced Placement Program provides motivated and academically prepared students the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both, for successful performance on the AP exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.8 million high school students worldwide who took AP exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar. Students took AP exams after completing challenging college-level courses. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on student’s performance on AP exams. Co-Parenting with the Coalition The Happiness Coalition strikes again in helping divorced people navigate their way back to successful and happy lives — especially with children. Coalition leaders — Robyn Podboy, Melissa Rocci and Terri Crogan — are hosting Learn to Co-Parent Through Divorce in October. Through your parenting partnership, your children should recognize that they are more important than the conflict that ended the marriage, and understand that your love for them will prevail despite the changing circumstances. Divorce is never a first choice or a desired end, and often children become caught in the middle. This class is intended for parents to learn about coping with

children during a divorce and the changes that come with it. Learn to Co-Parent Through Divorce is a four-week class dedicated to teaching parents to work together successfully while understanding and responding to the needs of children both during and after divorce. Parenting support classes help families build and maintain healthy relationships, as well as promote a better future for your children. Classes are $125 will take place Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. from Oct. 7-28. Registration can be made through Robyn Podboy by calling 330-757-4259. Further information can be found at www.happinesscoalition.com or visiting 1570 S. Canfield-Niles Road, Suite C-101 in Austintown.
