Swiss steak dinner fundraiser to be Oct. 14 The Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus # 3930 will be sponsoring a Swiss steak dinner on Oct. 14. There will be a free pancake, sausage and egg breakfast on Oct. 10 from 9-11 a.m. at Smith Corners United Methodist Church, located at 3000 S. Canfield Niles Road in Austintown.

Donations will be accepted and proceeds will go towards world service projects.

Mooney Class of 1963 to have 55th reunion The Cardinal Mooney Class of 1963 55th reunion will take place on Oct. 20. The event was planned by the reunion committee based on feedback from the 70th birthday party in 2015.

Events include a meeting in the Radius Room of Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park from 1-4 p.m., a Mass at St. Dominic at 5 p.m., a presentation by Mark Oles, President of Cardinal Mooney, and tour at 6:15 p.m. at Cardinal Mooney High School and an evening mixer at 7 p.m. at Stonebridge Grill and Tavern, located at 1497 Boardman Canfield Road. Refreshments will be provided, and a cash bar and dinner is available to purchase from a limited menu. The fest of the activities are included at a cost of $30 per person. Sports Clips opens in Austintown

On Sept. 11, a new Sports Clips opened in the Weston Center shopping plaza.

Chris Lake, the owner, said that ever since he opened the Sports Clips in Niles he has been looking to Austintown for possible expansion.

“This is the natural place for us to move to. I think the demo-

graphics here match our interests and we wanted to expand our business,” Lake said.

Lake said that he hired 11 new stylists to work at the Austintown store.

Sports Clips is promoting their MVP treatment, which includes a massaging shampoo, hot steamed towel treatment and neck and shoulder massage, by upgrading any new customer

automatically to the MVP. “For us its all about the experience its more than just a haircut,” Lake said.

Sports Clips stores are famous, according to Lake, for their large TV displays that have sports channels playing at all times. The store also offers online check in, Lake said, and walk in’s are also welcome.

There was also a raffle, which

took place on the first day of business, the proceeds of which went to Operation Troop Appreciation.

Friendly Squares Halloween square dance The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Oct. 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Rex Parker will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cueing the line dances. The theme for the dance is Halloween.

Celebrate teen read week with Mindy McGinnis

Help the Austintown library celebrate Teen Read Week, which is a national event from Oct. 7-13, with award-winning, Ohio author and blogger, Mindy McGinnis on Oct. 9 at 9 a.m. McGinnis writes across multiple genres including post-apocalyptic, historical, thriller, contemporary, mystery and fantasy. “A Madness so Discreet,” McGinnis’s gothic historical set in an insane asylum, won the Cardinal Mooney to host Edgar award for Best Teen Mystery seventh- and eighth-grade in 2015. He continued that during opening day the store is donating a portion of their proceeds to OTA.

“They get w it h deployed men and women and get them things that either help their mission, or help the moral,” Lake said.

Lake said that he prides himself on the relationship both

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. The Austintown Fitch High School marching band attended the Canfield Fair on Aug. 30 for the annual high school band demonstrations.

Austintown was joined by 14 other local bands, including South Range and Canfield.

“It’s a great way to get the kids out there, and show off their talent,” said the Band’s Director Wes O’Connor.

He said that the band has been attending the fair for years.

“The kids love the fair so to come out and perform at the grand stand is a treat for them,” O’Connor said.

During the performance the band played their first show, a tribute to World War I. They dressed in full uniform and showed off their marching skills in a smaller space then they are used to performing in.

“It takes a little getting used to,” O’Connor said. “But I think they did great.”

This year is the 172nd anniversary of the Canfield Fair.

Trolley ride gives information on Mill Creek Park

Mill Creek Park put on a Fun Facts Trolley Tour on Aug. 22.

The tour began at Ford Nature Center where naturalist Cody Stoll met with community members.

Stoll, who specializes in geology, gave fun facts to trolley riders as t hey t raveled throughout the park.

“You can’t drive through the park with out seeing dozens and dozens of things to talk about,” said Carol Vigarito, the recreation and education director at the MetroParks.

Vigarito said that the facts focused on a range of topics, including natural and historical information.

She explained that this tour d i f fered f rom usua l t rol ly tours because it was longer, covering the full expanse of the park.

The tour took around two hours, and traveled all the way from Ford Nature Center to New Port and through all the historical and natural interest points in the park.

“You can ride through the park and talk for more than two hours,” Vigarito said.

The normal trolley tour lasts

around 50-60 minutes and travels to the Mahoning River and the mill.

“This tour gives people a great idea about what the park has to offer,” Vigarito said.

This tour was a one time thing, according to Vigarito, who explained that the park puts on a special trolley tour once a month.

Upcoming in October and September, the park with host a picnic in the park trolley tour.

POLICE REPORTS Sept. 18 Fraud: An Eastwind Place resident discovered $1,200 worth of fraudulent creditcard charges.

Theft: Ashley M. Ahlquist, 25, of North Highland Avenue, Girard, was charged with intentionally failing to self-scan $150 worth of food items and hair products while in Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave. Summons: Police answered a call regarding a vehicular accident with possible injuries in the 800 block of North Canfield-Niles Road, where they wrote a summons charging Jennifer L. Cupan, 36, with obstructing official business. Cupan, of Southern Boulevard, Youngstown, admitted having fled the scene because she had no valid driver’s license, a report showed.

Theft: Jewelry was reportedly stolen from Austintown Pawn Inc., 3700 Mahoning Ave. Theft by deception: Police investigated a possible fraudulent GoFundMe account that reportedly originated from the 4200 block of Woodmere Drive.

Theft: A $50 ticket was stolen from Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course, 655 N. Canfield-Niles Road.

Sept. 19 Theft: A set of car keys was missing from a residence in the 5700 block of Norquist Boulevard.

Recovered property: A Ford Taurus was found in Campbell after having been reported stolen in the 100 block of Javit Court.

Burglary: Took place in the 1800 block of South Raccoon Road, though the report offered no further details.

Overdose: Authorities responded to a possible drug overdose in the 4200 block of Woodmere Drive, where firefighters and paramedics reported having found a man slumped in a vehicle in the garage before he was given two doses of naloxone to reverse or block the effects of opioids, then taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. After coming to, the man admitted having a tin fold that contained a small quantity of suspected heroin, a report stated.

Domestic violence: Jeremiah J. Bugno, 38, of Staatz Drive, Austintown, was charged with the crime after his wife alleged that during an altercation related to the contents of an iPhone, an intoxicated Bugno punched her upper chest area and lower rib cage.

Sept. 20 Assault: An assault was reported in the 300 block of North Edgehill Avenue. The report contained no specific details, however.

Drugs: Officers investigating a possible parking violation on North Beverly Avenue charged James D. Schmidt of South Avenue Extension, North Lima, with possessing drug paraphernalia. Schmidt, 35, had a paper bag that contained a course scouring pad for drug use, police alleged.

Fraud: A Tulane Avenue resident discovered a $1,726 unauthorized credit-card charge.

Sept. 21 Arrest: Police arrested James M. Adkins, 41, at his Kenmar Court residence upon learning that the Austintown man was wanted on a Hubbard warrant charging forgery and theft.

Auto theft: A 2001 Chevrolet Impala was stolen in the 3700 block of Riblett Road.

Theft: Pamela A. Snyder, 53, faced a theft charge after officers alleged Snyder, of Vera Avenue, Southington, had stolen two undergarments from Walmart.

Arrest: A traffic stop near North Meridian Road resulted in the arrest of Lauren L. Gordon, 34, of West Heights Avenue, Youngstown. Gordon was wanted on a bench warrant accusing her of failing to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court.

Fraud: A bad $3,278 check was reportedly passed at a business in the 1600 block of South Canfield-Niles Road.

Pursuit: Police reported that after attempting to pull over a car with a stolen license plate near Belle Vista Avenue, the driver led them on a vehicular chase that reached 70 mph on Mahoning Avenue before authorities terminated the pursuit near Salt Springs Road.

Criminal damaging: A window was broken at a home in the 400 block of South Raccoon Road.

Theft: A hubcap was removed from a vehicle at a business in the 300 block of Victoria Road.

Theft: A Kirwan Drive resident alleged a home healthcare worker stole then cashed a check.

Sept. 22 Arrest: Authorities investigated a report that a man had jumped a fence and peered through a back-porch window to a Woodridge Drive home before apprehending Jayrell L. Cunningham, 21, of South Raccoon Road, Austintown, and charging him with obstructing official business and carrying a concealed weapon. Cunningham led officers on a foot chase, ignored several commands to stop and was found with a 5-inch knife with a curved blade, a report showed.

Theft: A South Navarre Avenue resident’s stolen wallet was returned, but the victim discovered a $20 unauthorized charge had been made.

Theft: Janet E. Price, 64, of Ardmore Drive, Youngstown, was charged in the theft of $45 worth of undergarments and other merchandise from Walmart.

Theft: A wallet and credit cards were reported stolen at Austintown Township Park, 6000 Kirk Road.

Sept. 23 Arrest: While assisting with an accident investigation in the 4400 block of Norquist Boulevard, authorities took Joshua R. Kosa, 35, into custody. Kosa, of South Bailey Road, North Jackson, was wanted on an outstanding Boardman Area Court warrant charging theft.

Burglary: To a residence in the 4100 block of New Road. A bicycle was recovered after having been stolen.

Theft: A car title and registration were removed from a vehicle in the 70 block of South Beverly Avenue.

Theft: A suspect reportedly fled after a shoplifting situation at Giant Eagle, 5220 Mahoning Ave., though the report did not mention what had been taken.

Harassment: A person in the 5600 block of Mahoning Avenue reported having received a series of such text messages.

Theft: A tractor battery was stolen in the 4400 block of Alderwood Drive.

Drugs: A large amount of suspected marijuana and cash was reportedly found in the 4100 block of New Road, though no arrests were mentioned in the report.

Theft: Breazia L. Smith, 24, of Colonial Drive, and Na’Tyjsha D. McCall, 21, of Oregon Avenue, were charged with theft and complicity to theft, respectively. The two Youngstown women were accused in the theft of 68 items that totaled $871 at Walmart.

With 10 minutes to go in the second half, the Falcons’ Katlyn Klasic scored the game tying goal with an assist from Gretchen George. The junior varsity girls defeated Boardman by a score of 2-1 with goals from Mackenzie Hartman and Sylvia Direnzo.

Both goals were assisted by Moira George.

Girls varsity soccer ties Glenoak On Sept. 22, the Austintown Fitch girls varsity soccer team tied Glenoak 1-1. The Falcons surrendered a goal at the midpoint of the first half and trailed the Golden Eagles by a score of 1-0 at the half.

The Falcons turned it around in the second half when Sydney Spencer tied the match with an assist from Katlyn Klasic in the 12th minute. In junior varsity action, Mya Kaschak scored her seventh goal of the season (asst. Megan Bartley) to lead the Falcons past Glenoak by a score of 1-0.

Mr. and Mrs. John Nicastro of Canfield recently marked their 50th anniversary with their family at Steamers Stonewall Tavern in North Lima. They are planning a vacation to Italy to further celebrate the occasion.

The dinner was hosted by the couples’ children, Elyce Ervin of Sylvania, Jason Nicastro of Canfield and Lee (Lyndsey) Nicastro, also of Canfield.

The couple also have three grandchildren.

Mr. Nicastro married the former Sharon Hoza on July 26, 1968, at St. Mary Church in Warren.

Mrs. Nicastro was a teacher for the Diocese of Youngstown in Austintown until she retired in 2013 and is a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority.

Halls celebrate 60th anniversary with family youngstown

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard “Lennie” Hall of Youngstown recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family.

The couple’s children are Leonard (Patti) Hall of Boardman, Cheryl Hall of Parma and Gary Hall of Cleveland.

Three grandchildren, Lyndsie (Jason) Erdy of Philadelphia, Alison (Ryan) Stagg of Columbus and Philip Hall of Boardman complete their family.

Mr. Hall married the former Gail “Peggy” Cox on Aug. 23, 1958, at Christ Lutheran Church in Struthers.

Mrs. Hall worked for Mahoning National Bank, now Sky Bank, until retiring.

Mr. Hall is retired from LTV Steel.

The couple are members of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman.
