Canfield Local School District named highest in tri-county area in performance index On the 2017-2018 state report card, the Canfield Local School District is once again the highest in the Tri-County area for performance index scoring 104.3. Last year Canfield scored 103. The performance index measures the test results of every student at their own ability level. Some of the categories that make up Ohio’s report card are achievement, gap closing, progress (value added) and graduation rate. This report card also measured financial data. The Canfield Local School District spends 70.5 percent of its funds on classroom instruction. This amounts to a cost per pupil expenditure of $8,713. The state average is $9,149.

Mooney Class of 1963 to have 55th reunion The Cardinal Mooney Class of 1963 55th reunion will take place on Oct. 20. The event was planned by the reunion committee based on feedback from the 70th birthday party in 2015.

Events include a meeting in the Radius Room of Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park from 1-4 p.m., a Mass at St. Dominic at 5 p.m., a presentation by Mark Oles, President of Cardinal Mooney, and tour at 6:15 p.m. at Cardinal Mooney High School and an evening mixer at 7 p.m. at Stonebridge Grill and Tavern, located at 1497 Boardman Canfield Road. Refreshments will be provided, and a cash bar and dinner is available to purchase from a limited menu. The fest of the activities are included at a cost of $30 per person. Canfield High School’s Antal honored for art work

Canfield High School art teacher Kate Antal was accepted into the 54th Trumbull Art Gallery Annual Show with two of her paintings. The juried exhibition is open to artists who live within a 100-mile radius of Warren or are originally from the area.

Antal’s paintings “Buppy,” an oil on canvas, and “Cape Cod, 1984” an oil on canvas, were two of the 121 works of art selected by Juror Tony Armeni from the 207 pieces submitted by 86 artists.

“Buppy” was also accepted into the Butler Area Artists Show in 2017.

“My painting ‘Buppy’ is of my grandfather, and if he was still living he would be so proud, as I was the apple of his eye. ‘Cape Cod, 1984’ is a painting of me on the beach when I was a little girl,” Antal said.

Antal was awarded one of eight juror awards, which were presented to artists who had multiple pieces chosen for the show.

Antal said it is important to her to not only be an artist and a teacher but also a teacher and an artist.

“It is important for the kids to see me as an artist, not just as a teacher. It’s important for them to see my skills and what I can do.

It gets them interested. I was told

a long time ago it’s very important to not only be an artist and a teacher but also a teacher and an artist. That has stuck with me. If I can inspire them in class, they can see that they can do this, too.

I am still learning, there is always something new to learn,” Antal said.

Antal is working on her Masters in Art Education and her graduate work focuses on the interplay of memory and portraiture.

“In the last five years until now, my perspective is totally different. In my graduate work, I am focusing on the interplay of memory and portraiture. I am focusing a lot on my family. I had three of my grandparents pass away in a short amount of time.

This was my inspiration and motivation to go back to grad school and continue my education. For my work, I have taken pictures of objects members of my family owned and treasured and then I paint them as a tribute to my family. I also take pictures of family members and paint them as a remembrance,” Antal said.

Antal said art is her passion and teaching is her passion.

“Art is my passion. I love that gift I have been given. Teaching is also my passion. I love it. I love to be able to show my students what I can do and inspire them and pass my passion along to them,” Antal said.

The submitted works of art which were not chosen for the Trumbull Art Gallery Annual Show will be shown at the Nissen Gallery at Trumbull Regional Medical Center, including Antal’s “Blue 33,” a colored pencil on matte board.

Antal is a 2000 graduate of Canfield High School and has been teaching art at the school for 10 years. She completed her under-

graduate work at Youngstown State University and will graduate in December with a Masters in Art Education from YSU. Antal will host her Graduate Exhibition which will feature he works of the interplay of memory and portraiture Dec. 10-14 at Soloman Gallery in Bliss Hall at YSU. An exhibition reception will take place from 6-8 p.m. Dec. 14, which is open to the public.

Mill Creek Park hosted a Kokedama gardening class on Sept. 11 at Fellows Riverside Garden.

Instructor Pam Baytos led the class, using plants and other natural material to create sculptures.

“You just use your hands to create a natural piece of art,” Baytos said.

Kokedama is a form of Japanese gardening related to bonsai.

“You can keep these small, where as with a bonsai you really have to know what you’re doing,” Baytos said.

During the class each member was given a plant, pins, fishing wire and moss.

All supplies were provided by the metro parks and paid for using class attendees fees.

Participants molded the dirt and roots of the plant into a ball, and surrounded it with moss.

To keep the sculpture in place the class placed pins in the dirt, then wrapped fishing wire around it.

After the plant was firmly in place the groups members were offered decorative string to wrap around the ball again.

According to Baytos this allowed for extra support as well as adding color or decoration to the art.

She added that eventually the roots will grow out of the moss, and when that happens to either unwrap and rewrap the moss over the roots, or to trim them back.

After participants were done with the project they were given a stand to display their art at home.

Hilltopper named a winner in design contest

Hilltop Elementary School second-grade student Eva Camuso was named a winner in the “Ohio Schools” magazine Create a Cover Contest. Camuso earned the award in the kindergarten through fourthgrade division.

Hilltop’s physical education teacher Linda Magyar sent in several student entries to the annual design competition, which included students from all across Ohio.

All winners were published in the June 2018 issue of “Ohio Schools” magazine, with the grand prize appearing on the cover.

The contest is open to all students enrolled in grades K-12 in public schools in Ohio. The theme of the contest the students were to focus on was ‘What I like most about my school.’ Camuso focused on the library.

Camuso was awarded a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card and a copy of “Ohio Schools” magazine.

Library receives grant for pilot program offering social service assistance T he P ubl ic L ibra r y of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) has received a grant of $27,600 from the Gerald M. Kline Family Foundation of San Ramon, Calif., to conduct a pilot program which would enable the library to better serve patrons with needs in social service and mental health areas.

The Gerald M. Kline Family Foundation, based in Emeryville, Calif., has provided more than $10 million to philanthropic causes since its inception. The foundation is particularly interested in public library initiatives that provide innovative services to the communities they serve.

Aimee Fifarek, PLYMC Executive Director, explained that a library is one of the few places where all people are welcome and receive valuable services without having to purchase

anything.

“People come to us for library service, but they bring their entire lives with them,” she said.

“Some are struggling with socialization issues, homelessness, addictions, depression and other issues that may be beyond our library service expertise.”

She went on to that the Gerald M. Kline Foundation for awarding them the grant.

“We are grateful to the Gerald M. Kline Foundation for providing a grant which enables the library to offer to our patrons a very different kind of assistance,” Fifarek said. “This project aims to provide a way to connect people needing social services with resources that can help. When we in the library world start to offer a new service, we bring in skilled experts as partners to guide us

through the process. In this case, our partner will work with us not only find the expertise needed to help our patrons, but to train our staff to better serve patrons with social and emotional needs, as well. We want to give our staff the confidence and the tools to have positive interactions with every patron who walks through the door.”

The library’s project is multifaceted and includes contracting a Community Resource Specialist for a 9-month trial period, providing staff training from Ms. Haney, directing patrons to community resources and providing programming for the general public on mental health and substance abuse issues.

The programming goals are to inform and to make it easier for people have productive public discussions about mental health issues.

CVMS seventh-grade football remains undefeated The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade football team remained unbeaten through three games with a 20-0 victory over visiting Ashtabula Lakeside.

Canfield’s defense continued their dominance keeping their opponent out of the end zone for the third straight week.

Canfield’s AJ Grohovsky’s third down sack of the Dragon’s signal caller forced a fourth down punt and Canfield took over on their own 43 yard line.

Canfield proceeded to drive 57 yards in nine plays behind the hard running of Tyler Eikert and Scottie Eaton to take a 6-0 lead on a one yard plunge by quarterback Paul Bindas. The Cardinals threatened again late in the first half but penalties hampered their efforts and they entered halftime with a six point advantage.

Canfield took the second half kickoff and drove 65 yards in 10 plays to take a 14-0 lead. The Cards had touchdowns by Eikert and Ben Phillips called back due to penalties before Danny Inglis blasted into the end zone from two yards out and Bindas tacked on the conversion.

Ca n f ield V i l lage M idd le School welcomed Shannon Galvin as she visited the school to present a program on mindfulness and awareness on Aug. 28.

Galvin is a certified advanced yoga teacher and has a degree in Occupational Therapy and has been practicing yoga and meditation for more than 20 years. She has worked with individuals all over the world teaching yoga, meditation and mindfulness.

CVMS Principal Judd Rubin opened the assembly.

“Welcome to our traditional beginning of school assembly.

Within the first couple days of school, we like to bring in a special guest to talk to you and we are very excited to have Shannon Galvin here today to teach us about mindf ulness a nd awareness. Please give a warm welcome to our guest,” Rubin said.

Galvin took the floor and told the students they each have a journey.

“Every single one of you has a journey. Do I know your journey? No, I don’t. When the sun rises on a new day, you have the opportunity and ability to wake up to a new day and do something first, whatever your first is,” Galvin said.

Galvin then moved onto explaining the meaning of mindfulness.

“Mindfulness means being mindful in the moment. To

come into focus of one point and be present in that awareness. Wherever we are, such as sports, music, art, reading, focus on the one thing you are doing at that time. If you are mindful of yourself, you can learn to be mindful of others,” Galvin said.

Galvin’s program included her teaching the students techniques to achieve mindfulness and she asked the students to follow along with her as she demonstrated the techniques.

She also gave the students several tools to use to help them.

“These techniques will help you create a harmony in your body system. You can store these tools in your own personal tool box and can use them any time of day and you can continue to add to your toolbox,” Galvin said.

As she gave the students their tools and techniques, including breathing exercises, she explained that they could use them to deal with stress.

“You can use these techniques to deal with stress. All of these tools are for the benefit of you. Nobody else. You can control of your body. If you are in a situation and not feeling quite right or feeling anxious or nervous, you now have a tool to help relax yourself,” Galvin said.

To end her presentation, Galvin had the students lay on their backs and close their eyes.

“Now lay on your backs and close your eyes. Learn to be aware of your whole body. Feel

your whole body on the floor.

See if you can focus enough to hear the sounds in this space and start to become aware of them and listen to the them so you can be aware of the sounds

around us,” Galvin said.

Galvin thanked the students for inviting her to their school.

“It was my honor to be here and present to you tools of living mindfully and in the pres-

ent moment. It is my life mission to share this knowledge and help bring about the joy and peace that lives within every one of you. Thank you,” Galvin said.

Mr. and Mrs. John Nicastro of Canfield recently marked their 50th anniversary with their family at Steamers Stonewall Tavern in North Lima. They are planning a vacation to Italy to further celebrate the occasion.

The dinner was hosted by the couples’ children, Elyce Ervin of Sylvania, Jason Nicastro of Canfield and Lee (Lyndsey) Nicastro, also of Canfield.

The couple also have three grandchildren.

Mr. Nicastro married the former Sharon Hoza on July 26, 1968, at St. Mary Church in Warren.

Mrs. Nicastro was a teacher for the Diocese of Youngstown in Austintown until she retired in 2013 and is a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority.

Halls celebrate 60th anniversary with family youngstown

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard “Lennie” Hall of Youngstown recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family.

The couple’s children are Leonard (Patti) Hall of Boardman, Cheryl Hall of Parma and Gary Hall of Cleveland.

Three grandchildren, Lyndsie (Jason) Erdy of Philadelphia, Alison (Ryan) Stagg of Columbus and Philip Hall of Boardman complete their family.

Mr. Hall married the former Gail “Peggy” Cox on Aug. 23, 1958, at Christ Lutheran Church in Struthers.

Mrs. Hall worked for Mahoning National Bank, now Sky Bank, until retiring.

Mr. Hall is retired from LTV Steel.

The couple are members of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman.
