Austintown community supports local family by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Members of the Austintown communit y came toget her for the Cam Jaros Color Run at Austintown Middle School on Sept. 17 to support the Jaros family. In May, Cameron Jaros, 12, was diagnosed with Acute B Cell Leukemia. The event raised money to help his family pay for his future medical needs.

“I don’t know what to say. Our community is awesome,“ said Kristen Jaros, Cameron’s mother, of the color run and the people who came out to support the family. The event had 376 people register before the day of the event, and many more registered at the event. Lynn Mickey coordinated the event to help the family. Mickey’s daughter goes to school with Cameron. When she heard the diagnosis, she asked her

mom to help the Jaros family. Mickey chose to do a color run because people of all ages could enjoy it. The event had two color runs, a 5k and a mile run, as well as exciting opportunities at the field near the AMS building, including concessions, a bounce castle and inflatable slide, a photo booth, face painters, Handel’s and a DJ. People could also purchase color powder packets. Everything at the color run was

donated for the event. The 5k started at 9 a.m. Before the run, Phyllis Miller led a prayer for Cameron Jaros’s health. The run went past the Jaros’s house so Cameron could see the supporters. The one mile run at 10:30 went around the Austintown Fitch School campus. For anyone looking to help the Jaros family after the event, contact Lynn Mickey at 330770-5871.

Painters make starfish at Austintown library By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Austintown library hosted a class for community members to create a watercolor painting in the meeting room of the library on Aug. 23. Librarian Andrea Zupcsan led the group of seven to creating a starfish painting similar to her own. Zupcsan provided the painters with the necessary utensils to make the painting. The group used warm colors, such as yellow and orange, for their starfish and added cool colors, mostly combinations of blues and greens. Some went for a very light blue while others for a mild sea foam green color. Zupscan used her abilities to help the others in class. She stressed certain things like implementing a soft trace of the starfish stencil so it can be easily erased. One of the people had issues with the paint’s thickness and painting issues, which Zupcsan resolved by adding more water to his paint. She also made sure no one’s warm and cool colors mixed by explaining that everyone needed to be careful around the starfish’s edges. Zupcsan did lead and help, but the painters did what they wanted for the most part, using Zupcsan as support. The

painters picked their own colors as well as mixing colors to get other desired colors. For example, one person wanted their water to look like a bright blue Caribbean ocean, so the painter added white to her cerulean to brighten her blue color. Most of the group painted the starfish with a blue ocean background as the example painting had shown, but others added their own twists to their pictures. One painter added a seashell in the painting and another included seaweed. One of the members placed her starfish on the shore instead of in the ocean. Other painters used their knowledge of other painting techniques to add texture to their works. For example, they got two brushes and put paint on one brush, then used the other brush to slap the brush, The painters used this technique to place dots on the starfish or put other interesting colors in the water. A u s t i nt ow n l i br a r y offers these types of events on a monthly basis. The class will be trying their hands at an acrylic painting on Sept. 13 and another piece of art on Oct. 25. The classes tend to fill up quickly and have several people on the waitlist. The events and sign ups are listed on the event calendar of libraryvisit.org.

A mother read a book to her baby at Bonding with Babies at the Austintown library on Aug. 15.

Austintown library gave a fun opportunity to babies with the Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies event on Aug. 15. Librarian Mallory Wiand led the event. The children and parents sang songs, danced a bit, read books and ended their time with a social and play time. The event teaches babies vocal patterns, identification tools and social abilities, while also staying fun for the children. The group sang multiple songs throughout the event. The session always starts with a sing-along of “The More We Get Together.“ She grabbed a stuffed monkey and held it in her lap like a baby. She used the monkey to show the parents the movements they should be making with their children.

For example, a baby should be clapping during “Come Along and Clap with Me.“ She brought the monkeys hands together to look like it was clapping to demonstrate. The group also sang “Two Little Blackbirds“ and “The Noble Duke of York.“ Wiand also read two books aloud for the babies. The first one, “Zoom,“ helped the children with identifying different vehicles, animals and colors. The second book focused on body part identification, during which the babies pointed to the parts of their body. The singing and reading ended, so the babies began to play together. Wiand brought out three large containers with toys in them. Many of the toys were foam objects, like balls and other shapes. One of the boxes contained a toy piano and another had stuffed animals for the babies to play with. This part of the event is designed to help the babies be more sociable and play together. The library hosts Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies every Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. The event takes place in their Children’s Activity Room, the room at the end of the children’s area with couches and children’s books.
