Drag racer Ryan Martino leads STEM lesson at Boardman library By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Boardman library invited drag racer Ryan Martino to the library to teach children science through his knowledge of racing for their Science Stories event with Ryan Martino event on Sept. 18. Ma rtino coordinated t he event with the library and led the event with librarian Karen Saunders. The event, which took place in the main meeting room, included a story, an activity and a craft. Ma rtino had gone to t he library often as a child and wanted to partner with the PLYMC when he got older. He has worked with the library

in the past and holds events at many other libraries. He stressed the importance of literacy and libraries, calling the latter an importance resource. His efforts at the library have led to other racing teams contacting him to see how they could hold similar events. The event began with Martino reading the story “Dino Racing.“ He placed the book on a table in the front with a number of other racing and automotive related books that the families could check out. After reading, he explained the differences between drag racing and NASCAR, which may be more familiar w ith the families. He explained the drag strip, the grad stands and

the gear that the racers use. The children walked up to the front of the room where Saunders and Martino prepared a racing strip for the children. They had toy cars and plastic racing lanes that dropped from the table to the floor to build momentum. The cars went dow n the racing strip and across the hardwood floor of the meeting room. If a car lifted off the track or struggled to stay straight on the floor, Martino and the children made adjustments by taping bolts to the cars. This adjustment taught the children about the importance of weight distribution on race cars. Small adjustments could make a car either fall off the

track or travel all the way to the far wall. The children went to the back of t he room for t heir craft after the activity. Saunders gave the children foam car bodies and other foam car parts to create a race car. She then supplied the children with markers, a large sheet of paper, straws and string to create a race track. The children drew the race track with t he ma rkers a nd used t he string and straws to make a finish line. Martino handed out coloring sheets of a dragster for the children to color at the end of the event. He also autographed photos and gave them to the children.

hospital cookies and birthday cards to thank them for their help reaching the anniversary. They also treated their employees to free pizza throughout the day to show their appreciation for their work on Monday. Employees of the hospital gave $25,000 donations to the Purple Cat, Our Community Kitchen, Sister Jerome’s Mission and the Dorothy Day House on Tuesday. The staff also had another $200,000 campaign for the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. These donations celebrated the large amount of charity work the hospital has done over the last decade. They have raised more than $50 million for charity through events like the Festival of Trees near Christmas. Most of their donations have gone to charities of faith to demonstrate the hospital’s religious identity. Current and retired employees went to Wednesday’s Spiritual Care Service to commemorate the hospital’s faithbased heritage by having a service in front of the statue of St. Elizabeth, the hospital’s patron saint. That same day saw the Blessings of the Hands, an allday event where Sister Darla Vogelsang went to the staff and

blessed their hands and gave them prayer cards. The staff had a mass ceremony in the Azalea Room on Friday. Father John Trimbur led the ceremony. He talked about the importance and meaning behind anniversaries and reaching a decade. The event ended the week’s celebrations on a fittingly religious note. Denise Dean said the events show “Why we are really here and what the true mission is.“ Genie Aubel, president of St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, reiterated that sentiment and often talked about the religious legacy the hospital is proud to have. She explained that the hospital finds healing through Christ and that their faith identity is as important as anything else to the hospital. Since 2007, the hospital has admitted more than 102,000 patients, treated more than 465,000 in the emergency room, and has welcomed nearly 10,500 new babies. The hospital now cares for nearly nine times as many outpatient visits as when it first opened and has almost double the amount of beds and operating rooms. They have nearly doubled the average number of monthly births at the hospital since creating maternity services in 2014. Currently, the hospital includes nearly 850 employees, more than 480 of which are on its medical staff. They also have 90 allied health professionals with privileges and three residency programs.

Babies get edge at early literacy with program at Boardman library By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Boardman librarian John Yingling led a summer reading event for babies that included sing-alongs, pop-up books and play time at the Boardman library’s Bonding with Babies and Books on Aug. 8. Yingling sat with a stuffed animal Snoopy on his lap and introduced himself. Then, he, along with all the parents and babies, sang “The More We Get Together,“ the song he uses to open each Bonding with Babies and Books event. The group sang more popular children’s songs, such as “If You’re Happy and You Know It.“ Most songs had a physical element to them, such as clapping or slapping a knee during “Giddy-Up.“ Later, they sang and acted out an identification song. The song asked the babies to point at their heads, knees, feet, the ceiling and the floor. After the sing-alongs, Yingling led story time. The first book he read was “Itsy-Bitsy Spider.“ The

following book, “Baby Signs,“ was a pop-up book about baby’s non-verbal communication. On each page, he showed the children the picture and the movement on the picture. The children had the opportunity to play following the readings. Yingling pulled out a bag of toy animals, such as a giraffe and frog. He also brought out beach balls, plastic balls and a big toy die for the children to play with. The babies solved puzzles with big pieces with everyday objects on them, like fruit or vehicles. During this time, a radio lightly played children’s music. The Boardman library hosts Bonding with Babies and Books events for children aged 6-23 months every Tuesday. Once school starts, they will begin having events for toddlers on Wednesday. A not her reading event, called Night Owl, for younger students starts on a monthly basis around that same time.
