Local federation of women’s clubs plans for annual fundraiser The Youngstown Area Federation of Women’s Clubs Inc. recently met to review plans for its annual fundraiser luncheon, “Autumn Glory.” The luncheon will take place at the Tippecanoe Country Club in Canfield on Oct. 18 at 11:30 a.m. Raffle tickets will be sold and apparel from Chico’s, a women’s clothing store, will be modeled. Proceeds from the event enable the organization to provide college scholarships to non-traditional female students who attend Youngstown State University. Delphine Baldwin Casey is to

be the Mistress of Ceremony as well as the guest speaker. A reservation for the luncheon can be made by mailing a check payable to YAFWC Inc. in the amount of $35 per person to Catherine Campana, 5590 Sampson Drive, Girard, Ohio 44420. The check is the reservation and all checks should be mailed by Oct. 6. The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Oct. 10 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Networking will begin at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. The speaker for the evening will be Cindy Best from Howard Hanna Realtors. She will speak about how she got started in the business and the current trends in the real estate world. The menu will include Southern baked chicken, Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, salad, Jello, applesauce and apple cake for dessert. The cost is $18. Shoe donation aims to help hurricane victims Doctors Lawrence Karlock, Catherine Karlock, John Flauto, Joseph Arters and Darleen Abadco, and the staff at Austintown Podiatry Associates are looking to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They are collecting shoes to donate to the victims who have lost their footwear. MCCTC flower shop opens for business The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will opened for its fall open house beginning on Sept. 22 and will be open throughout the month of October. A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside. The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Choose from the selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Students create ‘whirled peace’ at Canfield High School By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Canfield High School students took part in an international art and literacy project, Pinwheels for Peace, by ‘planting’ pinwheels with messages of peace at the main entrance of the high school on Sept. 21. The students planted their pinwheels on the International Day of Peace as a public statement and art exhibit/installation. The students assembled the pinwheels as part of the creation process, while writing their thoughts about peace, love, understanding, tolerance and living in harmony with others on one side of the pinwheel. Some students also included inspirational quotes. On the other side of the pinwheel, they drew sy mbols,

such as peace signs and rainbows, with markers and colored pencils to visually express their feelings. Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two art teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, of Coconut Creek, Fla., as a way for students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. In t he f irst yea r, g roups in more than 1,325 locations throughout the world were spinning pinwheels on Sept. 21. There were approximately 500,000 pinwheels spinning throughout the world. The Canfield Local School District has started a Weekly Update featuring Superintendent Alex Geordan, which is now highlighted on its website and Twitter account. “The Weekly Update is a way for the community to know what’s happening in our schools. The goal is to achieve better community engagement and to help communicate what is going on in our school district. We would like the community to utilize our website when looking for information about our schools,” said Renee

Community members may e-mail any questions they may have to canfieldupdate@canfieldschools.net and Superintendent Geordan will answer them in a timely manner. “The Weekly Update will offer up-to-date accurate information. Canfield’s offense took over at their own 11 yard line and drove 89 yards in eight plays, keyed by a 19-yard strike from Lowry to tight end AJ Havrilla. Ryan Schneider plowed in from 11 yards out and Lowry hit Havrilla with the conversion to give Canfield a 20-6 halftime lead. Canfield took possession to open the second half and ground out a 65-yard, ten play drive which was capped off by a 3-yard dash by Schneider to put Canfield up 26-6. Lakeside added two late touchdowns for the final margin. Lowry accounted for 150 total yards, 61 on the ground and 89 through the air on 6 of 9 passing. Schneider led the Canfield rushing attack with 95 yards on 13 totes. Coach Donadee cited the offensive line play of AJ Murphy, Evan Parker, Dom DiDonado, Augie DiMartino and Jimmy Scharrer as a key to victory.

CVMS football claims victory over Ashtabula Lakeside The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade football team traveled to Ashtabula recently and came away with a 2620 victory to improve to 3-0 on the season. Lakeside struck first on the games initial play as a Lakeside Dragon raced 65 yards on a jet sweep to take a 6-0 lead. Canfield responded on their next possession, moving 65 yards in seven plays, culminated by a 13yard touchdown toss from Broc Lowry to Jack Fabry to tie the game at six. On Lakeside’s next possession Canfield’s Ryan Schneider stripped the ball from a Lakeside ball carrier and AJ Havrilla recovered the fumble to set up Canfield on the host 30. Lowry then hooked up with Fabry again from 12 yards out to give the Cards a 12-0 advantage. Lakeside drove deep into Cardinal territory on the their next possession only to be turned back.

Happily Ever After Surprise event celebrates 65th for Kalenitses Youngstown Frank and Ann Kalenits of Youngstown were honored for their 65th wedding anniversary with a surprise party hosted by their children July 8 at the Georgeanna Parker Center at Boardman Park. The Kalenitses have five children, Christine Kennedy of Tulsa, Okla.; Judy (Bruce) MacGregor of Mineral Ridge; Mary Jo Mshar of Youngstown; Elizabeth (Clint) Hood of Youngstown; and Frank (Lorena) Kalenits of Las Vegas. The Kalenitses have 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. All of their children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren were in attendance at the surprise party. Mr. Kalenits and the former Ann Lawrence were married on April 19, 1952, at St. Brendan Church in Youngstown. Mrs. Kalenits was employed by General Electric, Gran Lanes, Golden Crust Bakery in Lordstown from the maintenance department in 1994. He served in both the U.S. Army and the Donut Oven before retiring in 2002. Mr. Kalenits retired from General Motors and Air Force.

The bride-elect’s parents are Gene and Janet Donofrio and the prospective groom’s parents are David and Mary Brown, all of Canfield. The ceremony will take place in October at St. Michael Church in Canfield with a reception to follow at St. Mary Church Hall in Youngstown. Invitations will be issued for both events. Miss Donofrio graduated from Bowling Green State University with a master’s degree in speech language pathology. She is employed with Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital in Howland. Mr. Brown also graduated from BGSU with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and is working in his field.

Mr. and Mrs. Helsel celebrate 50th anniversary AUSTINTOWN Mr. and Mrs. William Helsel of Austintown celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a second honeymoon trip to Niagara Falls with friends. Mr. Helsel and the former Janet Kramer were married June 24, 1967, at the Mahoning United Methodist Church in Youngstown. Their children are Tricia (Dave) Peters of Greensboro, N.C., and Donna (Cliff) Helsel Scott of Austintown. They also have three grandchildren. Mrs. Helsel worked from home and as the bookkeeper for Bloomin’ Crazy Florist for 20 years and for Livia Calais Fashions for 10 years until retiring in 2000. She is a member of the Austintown Community Church quilting group and the “Quilts from the Heart” group of Niles, which makes children’s quilts for Akron Children’s Hospital. Mr. Helsel served in the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Vietnam War. He worked as an engineer and a manager for AT&T for 30 years until he retired in 1999. He recently retired after 23 years as president of

the Mill Creek Junior Baseball League where he remains a trustee. He is also a member of the Saxon Club. The couple are members of Western Reserve United Methodist Church in Canfield.

Stanley, Delma Grimes celebrate 60th anniversary austintown Stanley E. and Delma P. Grimes celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at a dinner at The Brown Derby restaurant in Medina with their family. The dinner was hosted by their son and daughter-inlaw, Tim and Dawn Grimes. Mr. Grimes and the former Delma Lang were married June 22, 1957, at the Nazarene Church in Clarksburg, W.Va. Mrs. Grimes retired in 1994 as a laborer with Industrial Chemical. She is a member of Order of the Eastern Star-Amaranth - White Shrine. Mr. Grimes retired in 1993 as a millwright for Alcoa Inc. in Cleveland. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean

conflict from 1952 to 1955. He is a 32nddegree Mason, OES and OFA.
