Seventh Annual Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member the community lost to cancer. Mahoning County libraries are sponsoring the seventh annual poetry writing contest to honor Scott and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/ teens/danielle/ or on standard 8 1/2 inch x 11 inch paper (not to exceed two pages) to any public library by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. Contest runs from Oct. 1-31.
ABWA to meet Oct. 13 The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Oct.13 at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. Monica Craven, Executive Director of Mahoning Valley Habitat for Humanity, will be the guest speaker for the evening. The menu for the evening will include quiche Lorraine, chicken a la king, scrambled eggs with cheese, sausage, ham, home fried potatoes, assorted pastries, fresh fruit, coffee, tea and orange juice. MetroMutts hosted Yappy Hour – Puptoberfest at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm on Sept. 10. Dogs and their owners were welcomed to the farm for fall festivities for both humans and canines. There were various activities available for those in attendance, including a corn maze, a bonfire and wagon rides. Guests were also given tokens for two craft beers. Julie Bartolone planned the event and said she wanted to make this year’s Puptoberfest extra special. She said that she appreciate the cooperating weather. MetroMutts has hosted events similar since it’s start in 2011, often having two of them a year. Bartolone decided to have one, going all out for the celebration.
Bartolone made homemade dog treats and smoothies made of bananas, other fruits and yogurt for the canines to enjoy. “We have a lot of people, I enjoy them, I enjoy the dogs and I enjoy it kind of being a fall event,” Bartolone said. Brad Miller came to the Puptoberfest on behalf of Suzie’s Dogs and Drafts, bringing his daughter to help serve food. Miller said he was happy to have this family-friendly opportunity and give back to the park that him and his family frequent. “We love having the opportunity to be a part of this and we enjoy the Mill Creek MetroParks on a regular basis,” Miller said. On Sept. 10, Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted Sprout Club, a weekly class dedicated to educating children from ages 3-5 about nature in the flourishing environment of the gardens. Bridget Beck instructed the class and said she enjoyed educating students about different aspects of nature. “We cover different topics –today’s topic is decomposers,” Beck said. However, Sprout Club is more
than just learning about nature in a classroom. “We typically read a story, go outside for a walk and have a snack,” Beck said. “It’s a great way to have the kids connect with the gardens and learn about plants or something in nature.” Beck said her favorite part of the class is getting to hear the children’s stories. “They often come and share their stories and things that they know,” Beck said. “That’s always a fun discussion.” Suzanne Taylor brought her
granddaughter, Layla, to Sprout Club – something the two do on a regular basis. “I like it when we connect with wildlife and when we go take hikes around the trails,” Taylor said. Taylor also enjoys the teachers and their teaching methods. “The teachers are so nice with the activities and the crafts,” Taylor said. Students are able to attend just one class or a series of Sprout Club classes at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Freshmen beat Walsh Jesuit The Canfield High School freshman football team traveled to Walsh Jesuit on Sept. 17 and came away with a 34-20 victory in a battle of unbeatens. Canfield got on the board first when Glenn Griswold hit wideout Matt Zaremski with a 15-yard scoring strike. The Cards extended their lead early in the second quarter to 14-0 when Vince Giordano blasted in from five yards out and then added the 2-point conversion run. Walsh got on board in the waning seconds of the first half on a long touchdown pass to make it 14-6 Canfield at the break. Canfield extended their lead to 20-6 when Griswold found a leaping Zaremski for the touchdown. Walsh closed the gap to 20-14 on their next possession when the Walsh runner scampered 40-yards on a fourth and one. Griswold used his feet for Canfield’s next score, racing 20-yards around right end to paydirt. The Cardinal’s Richie Herrara’s interception ended the Warriors next drive at the Cardinal’s 44. Canfield freshman tailback Colin Hritz rumbled 56-yards to Walsh 1 and Jake Whittenberger finished the drive from there plunging over left tackle for six. Seventh-graders blank Wildcats The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-graders traveled to Struthers on Sept. 23 and blanked the Wildcats 18-0. Canfield scored on their opening possession, moving 65 yards in 11 plays. The drive included a key 4-yard run by Conner Hritz on fourth and two from the Wildcats 37. Alex Schneider got the Cardinals on the board when he hauled in an Ethan Fletcher aerial from 8 yards out. Canfield struck again on their next possession when facing a fourth and goal from the Wildcats’ 10. Fletcher rolled right and spinted to the pylon for the 6-pointer to make it 12-0 to the Cardinals. Canfield’s defense stayed strong once again when Fletcher batted down a long fourth down pass attempt. The Cardinals took possession at midfield with .9 seconds remaining on the clock and Fletcher found Tony Pannunzio streaking down the right sideline for the touchdown and an 18-0 Canfield halftime lead. Struthers took possession to start the second half and drove down to the Canfield 10. A sack by Michael Minnenok pushed Struthers back to the 20, and on fourth down Hritz came up big again picking off the Struthers quarterback to preserve the shut out. Canfield then ran out the clock behind the running of Luke Holland, Drew Weems and Blake Wooley. Canfield’s defense, which registered its third shutout of the season, was keyed by Logan Torok, Chris Sammarone, Gianni Gaetano, Nick Hewko, Donny Syrianoudis, Anthony Orr, Dominic Magliocca and Ronnie Angelilli. Cardinals continue streak The Canfield High School freshman football team traveled to Ashtabula on Sept. 24 and came away with a 34-0 victory to stay undefeated on the season. Canfield scored first when Colin Hritz sprinted 15 yards to paydirt. The Cardinals made it 12-0 when quarterback Glenn Griswold raced 40 yards around left end. Max Dawson’s third quarter 18-yard touchdown jaunt was followed by a Griswold 2-point conversion run to give the visitors a 20-0 lead. Hritz’s electrifying 28-yard scoring run put Canfield up 26-0 and Richie Herrara put the finishing touches on Canfield’s victory when he sprinted 16 yards for a touchdown. Canfield’s defense, which registered its second shutout of the season, was led by PJ Haloff, Vince Giordano, Tyler Stein, Matt Zaremski and Jake Whittenberger. 5K raises money for Autism Society The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center of Boardman hosted its third 5K charity event on Aug. 21 in Canfield. This year’s proceeds were donated to The Autism Society of the Mahoning Valley. The center, along with owner Dr. Ted Suzelis, ND, business sponsors and runner registrations raised more than $2,000. The money will be used to help offset costs of the Youngstown Camp FRIEND program, SAFE’s Circle of Friends and other much needed social group programs. “I want to send a big thanks to the Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center for organizing and hosting the Valley Autism 5K and donating all proceeds to The Autism Society of the Mahoning Valley,” said Aundrea Cika, director of the Mahoning Valley office. “These funds will ensure the continu-
ance of greatly needed programs like Camp FRIEND, SAFE’s Circle of Friends and Social Connections and our parent information workshops.” The event highlights included the band Blue Spectrum from Columbus playing throughout the morning and the first place 10-Mile Relay team, Team Joshua, a parent pushing his autistic son in a jogging stroller. “We are happy we were able to organize this event to help local children, teens and young adults on the autism spectrum. We are a small business, so it was a lot of work for us, but our local autism community will greatly benefit. We consider it time well spent,” said Suzelis, owner of Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center. “We hope to be able to help with this event in the future and ask that if you are interested in being

Each club reported on service projects and activities conducted since they last met. Best of Fair gave fair-goers with Facebook accounts the opportunity to vote on their favorite food vendors or attractions at this year’s fair via a special page on the Fair website. Votes could be cast
from desktop computers or mobile devices. In the case of the latter, a QR code could be scanned that brought user directly to the Best of Fair site. Richards and Andrews both received at least five times as many votes as their nearest competitors, w ith Richards getting the victory by seven votes. Happily Ever After Roths will mark 51st anniversary on family trip Vincent and Catherine R. Roth of Poland will celebrate their 51st wedding anniversary this summer at a family gathering at Wild Dunes in Charleston, S.C. The couple’s children will host the celebration. The couple are the parents of Jennifer (Paul) Burgoyne and Jeffrey Roth, all of Poland, and the grandparents of four. Mrs. Roth, the former Catherine Kavinsky, worked as a sales associate for J.C. Penney in Youngstown before she retired in 2000. Mr. Roth retired in 1998 from Mahoning National Bank in Youngstown, where he was senior vice president. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. The Roths are members of Holy Family Church. They were married June 20, 1964, at St. Matthias Church in Youngstown.

Mrs. Craig worked part-time for Town & Country Cleaners and Gorant’s Candies. Mr. Craig retired from General Motors, where he worked for 31 years. He is the owner of Western Reserve Flag Co. in Boardman. A member of the Aut Mori Grotto Clown Unit, he is affectionately known as Pudge. He is a Vietnam War veteran.
