Scouts sell popcorn in October Canfield’s Cub Scout Pack 25 and Boy Scout Troop 25 of Canfield United Methodist Church will be selling Scouting Popcorn on different weekends at several Giant Eagle stores in the area.

Scouts will be showing and selling the Pecatonica River Popcorn Brand of products to help fund their camping, awards and other unit programs and activities for the upcoming year.

Cub Scout Pack 25 will be selling Scouting Popcorn on Oct. 7 from 1-5 p.m. at the Southland Crossings Giant Eagle, located at 1201 Doral Dr. near South Ave.; on Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Boardman Giant Eagle store, located at 476 Boardman-Canfield Road (State Rout 224); also Oct. 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. both days at the Austintown Giant Eagle store, located at 5220 Mahoning Ave., and the weekend of Oct. 20 and 21 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. both days at the Giant Eagle store in the Colonial Plaza, located at 525 E. Quarter auction event to take place on Oct. 13 The GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is hosting its third annual quarter auction on Oct. 13 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers. The doors open at 5 p.m. and bidding starts at 6 p.m. The event is bring your own beverage and you can bring your own food as no food or beverage will be sold. Tickets are $10 each.

Mooney alumni to host tailgate party before Ursuline game The Cardinal Mooney High School Minority Alumni Council will host a tailgate party on Oct. 19 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, in anticipation of the Mooney’s football game against rival Ursuline.

Boardman educators learn emergency skills

Boardman High School educators participated in the Stop the Bleed program put on by Mercy Health.

Stop the Bleed is a program that was created by Homeland Security to give people training on how to stop serious bleeding in an emergency.

“It came out of the Sandy Hook school shooting,” said Amanda Lencyk, a Mercy Health representative. “One of the doctors realized that a lot of the victims could have been saved if someone had jumped in.”

Lencyk said that the program has been around since 2015, and is now gaining momentum in the area.

“We started with trying to push it out to schools simply because its a bigger audience,” Lencyk said. “Then they can push it out into the community.”

Other schools in the area including Seabring and Niles, as well as a Girl Scout troop have participated in the training according to Lencyk.

“Its a step above regular first aid,” Lencyk said. “Its just an initiative to try to get as many people as possible trained.”

Lencyk said that the training focus’ on teaching the community how to apply a tourniquet, how to pack a wound and to help someone stop serious bleeding for themselves or others.

If someone were to cut an artery, Lenyck said that it could

take less than five minutes for them to bleed out.

According to Mercy Health after injury bleeding is the cause of 35 percent of deaths outside of hospitals.

Stop the Bleed helps to prevent these deaths by preparing people to respond to serious bleeding before it is too late.

“It is to be empowered to be able to jump in and do something,” Lenyck said. “To be able to step in and know that what ever they do they can jump in and help save that persons life.”

During the training Lencyk spoke to Boardman educators about the goal of the training and how it can help in any situation.

She discussed how being able to recognize when interven-

tion is required to stop bleeding and being able to use every day items is key to saving lives.

“This is not to take the place of first responders but to teach every day people what to do in the time it takes to dial 911 until the time those first responders arrive to help step in and save a life when minutes matter,” Lencyk said.

Those who participated in the event then broke into groups and practiced applying tourniquets and packing wounds.

The school also received a kit from Mercy Health that included gauze and a tourniquet for the school to keep.

Local doctor celebrates 40th year of local practice On Sept. 29, Dr. J. Murphy Crum celebrated 40 years of practice in the Yongstown area.

Crum completed his bachelor’s degree at Youngstown State University before earning his doctorate degree from Life University in Georgia. He then returned to the Mahoning Valley to work in his own chiropractic practice, Parkside Chiropractic and Rehabilitation in Boardman.

Boardman to host annual drum night Neighbors | Submitted

The heartbeat of every high school marching band is the percussion section or drumline.

Students on drumlines love to play so much that they don’t even need a band around them to perform. This will be displayed on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School gymnasium as the Boardman band presents its sixth annual drum night. Drumlines from Austintown, Champion, Howland, Liberty, McDonald, Western Reserve, YSU and Boardman will take the gym floor. The event usually ends with all the groups on the floor at once doing a mass “drum jam.” The Boardman High School drumline has been writing and rehearsing routines at least weekly since even before the start of the school year. The section leaders and members have collaborated to come up with features that are clever, comical and entertaining.

Mill Creek Park hosts Japanese gardening class

Mill Creek Park hosted a Kokedama gardening class on Sept. 11 at Fellows Riverside Garden.

Instructor Pam Baytos led the class, using plants and other natural material to create sculptures.

“You just use your hands to create a natural piece of art,” Baytos said.

Kokedama is a form of Japanese gardening related to bonsai.

“You can keep these small, where as with a bonsai you really have to know what you’re doing,” Baytos said.

During the class each member was given a plant, pins, fishing wire and moss.

All supplies were provided by the metro parks and paid for using class attendees fees.

Participants molded the dirt and roots of the plant into a ball, and surrounded it with moss.

To keep t he sculpture in place the class placed pins in the dirt, then wrapped fishing wire around it.

After the plant was firmly in place the groups members were offered decorative string to wrap around the ball again.

According to Baytos this allowed for extra support as well as adding color or decoration to the art.

Baytos said that to keep the plant, it needed water when the moss started to feel dry.

She added that eventually the roots will grow out of the moss, and when that happens to either unwrap and rewrap the moss over the roots, or to trim them back.

After participants were done with the project they were given a stand to display their art at home.

Friends of the Boardman Library host WWI presentation

On Sept. 10 the Friends of the Boardman library hosted their monthly meeting with a presentation by retired Lieutenant Coronal Rick Hossler.

Hossler presented to the group about the American invasion into Russia during World War I. “These are battles a lot of people don’t know anything about,” Hossler said.

He detailed how the American military got involved in Russia, fighting with Bolshevik soldiers there even after what is considered the end of the war.

The U.S. deployed 5,000 soldiers to North Russia and 8,000 to Siberia, according to Hossler, where they were sent into battle almost immediately.

Fighting along side French and British troops, soldiers st at ioned i n Ru ssia were fighting the Battle of Toulgas on Nov. 11, 1918, when the Armistice was signed.

Hossler said it wasn’t until two years later, in 1920, when those soldiers were finally sent home.

“It’s important, because so many people are unaware of this history,” Hossler said.

After Hosslers presentation the group had their meeting.

This presentation is one of many that are hosted by the Friends of the Boardman library.

Each month, according to President Denise Congemi, the group hosts a presentation by a variety of speakers.

The Friends of the Boardman library is an organization comprised solely of volunteers who raise money to suppor t t he Boa rdma n library.

“The money we ma ke a ll goes to the library. It’s to the benefit of the librar y only,” Congemi said.

The g roup cu r rent ly has around 45 members.

Congemi said that the group has a range of programs that raise money for the library.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Rick Hossler presented on the American invasion into Russia during World War I at the Sept. 10 meeting of the Friends of the Boardman Library group.

The group offers a book collection on the first and third Saturday of every month.

They then sort through the books for quality, and store and sell the remaining donations on a book cart.

“We are backing the library because we believe in the library,” Congemi said.

With the money the group raised Congemi said that they

were able to make a $25,000 donation to the playground at Boardman Park.

The group also gives yearly to the Summer Reading program at Boardman.

“We believe in our children,” Cingemi said, “If you don’t get them reading now and interested in books now they are going to say, ‘What do I need the library for?’”

Boardman Schools were recently ranked as the best district in the Youngstown area by Niche.com.

Niche is a website that uses comprehensive data from public sources, including the De-

partment of Education and U.S. Census, along with reviews from locals to analyze schools at all education levels around the country.

Boardman school district was chosen based on a 10 point report card analyzed by Niche.

The report included scores on academics, diversity, resources

and facilities and even food.

Boardman’s overall rating was an A, placing them above other local schools including Canfield and Austintown.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg).

One of Boardman’s highest rankings included an A for clubs and activities.

According to Rick Smrek a guidance counselor at Boardman, this is not surprising.

“I think what makes Boardman unique compared to other school districts in the area is the staggering number of quality programs, our depth of course selections and our incredible facilities,” Smrek said.

He named a number of Boardman programs that have gone above and beyond what can be expected locally, including a state of the art TV studio, a $4 million auditorium for drama productions and multitude of arts courses.

Smrek also stated that the schools music program is one of the largest in the area with four bands, four choirs and four orchestras including a rock orchestra, which earned the school a Grammy.

“My up-close perspective of everything that the Boardman Schools offer convinced me that it was the perfect place to educate my three children,” Smrek said. “I wanted the best for my children so I would not have sent them anywhere else.”

Boardman also received an A- for both college prep and academics.

“Academically, no matter what major our students choose for their future in college, chances are they were able to take multiple courses here at Boardman High School to build a foundation,” Smrek said.

He explained that Boardman offers 11 different AP courses and brings 50 colleges in each fall to meet with interested students.

Smrek also said that 90 percent of Boardman students are college bound after graduation.

Boardman High School Principal Cindy Fernback said that in 2018 318 seniors received diplomas, with 81 receiving honors diplomas.

“When you consider the areas that the rankings were based on, it is easy to see why Boardman ended up number one,” Smrek said.

“Of all the weapons or equipment that a Spartan carries, the shield is the only unselfish one because it not only protects the Spartan who is carrying it, but also the Spartan on his right and the Spartan on his left,” Fernback said. “Our students are tolerant, and they demonstrate inclusiveness, which we stress on a daily basis.”

She said that it is a districtwide dedication to these values that allowed Boardman to receive such a high ranking in diversity.

“We catch our Spartans doing good, and we praise those positive behaviors because we want to see more and more of those positive behaviors. We believe that we must celebrate what we wish to see more of each and every day,” Fernback said.

Radinov ic a lso said t hat Boardman has received other honors, including being the only Mahoning County High School to make the Top 100 Silver Medal Ranking from US News and World Report’s Best High Schools list in the spring.

“We have had a lot of state and national recognition as of late,” Radinovic said, citing the 24 sports and 35 clubs that Boardman offers as a main reason the schools are being nominated for these awards.

The Simply Slavic committee announced their 2018 scholarship winners at their recent festival volunteer dinner at St. George Croatian Center Lodge 66 on Vestal Road in Youngstown. This year two YSU students were awarded the grants. The winners were Boardman residents Stephen Stanko, a sophomore in Finance and part of the YSU Honors College, and Jordan Grantonic, a senior in violin performance and part of the YSU Honors College. This is the fifth year the organization has presented a scholarship earned from funds generated by the annual June festival. Undergraduate YSU students who have completed their freshman year and are currently enrolled at YSU are encouraged to apply. Applicants share why they are interested in Slavic culture or history. Scholarship funds can be used for tuition or study materials, as well as applied to study abroad programs. POLICE REPORTS Sept. 21 Arrest: Officers responded to a report that a car had struck the Fairfield Inn, 7397 Tiffany Blvd., before charging Teresa A. Schultheis, 56, of Chardonnay Lane, Poland, with operating a vehicle impaired.

Schultheis registered a 0.231 blood-alcohol content, nearly triple Ohio’s 0.08 legal intoxication limit, a report showed.

Arrest: Authorities answered a call pertaining to a man having a seizure at a Pearson Circle home before charging Jeffrey T. Benko, 49, of that address with abusing harmful intoxicants, a first-degree misdemeanor, obstructing official business and resisting arrest. The Boardman man, who had several canisters of an aerosol product, also grabbed an officer’s wrist and fought with police, they alleged.

Theft: A woman reportedly stole two pairs of shoes from Gabe’s, 850 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: A woman reportedly took $256 worth of cologne and socks from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: Authorities at the Mahoning County jail took custody of Reshawn L. Magby, 18, who was wanted on a theft warrant.

The Kent man was accused of stealing two wall thermostats and a sump pump Sept. 2 from Home Depot, 7001 Southern Blvd.

Unauthorized use of a vehicle: A South Avenue man said his 2013 Hyundai Sonata was taken without permission while he was at Southern Park Mall.

Theft: A man reported a $1,500 box directional sign missing from property he owns in the 7800 block of Market Street.

Arrest: Robert M. Allen of Wirt Street, Youngstown, was charged with fleeing

and eluding police, a third-degree felony, after authorities had attempted to pull him over near Romaine Avenue. Allen, 19, led officers on a vehicular pursuit that reached up to 75 mph on Southern Boulevard before it was terminated on Youngstown’s South Side and shortly before Allen was taken into custody nearby, a report stated.

Theft: A Fox Run Court woman noticed an antique vase and two $500 crystal candlesticks missing from a hallway to her apartment building.

Theft: A woman in her late 30s reportedly stole two hooded sweatshirts from Macy’s in Southern Park Mall.

Arrest: After responding to a vehicular crash in the 5000 block of YoungstownPoland Road, authorities charged Ted W. Rendinell, 56, of Lynn Drive, Youngstown, with operating a vehicle impaired.

Rendinell refused to submit to a breath test, a report said.

Theft: North Jackson police handed Damon L. Jefferson Jr., 24, to township authorities. Jefferson, of Lansdowne Boulevard, Youngstown, was charged with stealing a $194 pair of blue jeans April 13 from Bruce Gallery, 4040 Market St. Theft: A man in his 20s reportedly took $26 worth of car-tire products from Family Dollar, 4030 Market St. Sept. 22 Attempted breaking and entering: The property owner in the basement of a vacant office building in the 5000 block of Market Street reportedly heard two loud suspicious noises upstairs, where he saw two muddy footprints.

Theft: Christopher M. Minadeo of Lightner Place, Boardman, was charged in the theft of $99 worth of items from Walmart. Minadeo, 34, also was wanted on warrants.

Sept. 23 Criminal damaging: Police charged two Youngstown girls, 14 and 15, and a Youngstown boy, 16, with criminal damaging after alleging the teens cut open the packaging to BB guns while in Walmart.

All were released to the custody of their parents.

The Tkatches celebrate 65th anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Gresko celebrated their 50th anniversary by renewing their vows at a ceremony at St. Columba Cathedral in June and with a family trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The couple’s children are Sharon (Rich) Lawson of Canfield; Janice Gresko of Grandview; and Barbara (Shawn) Olcott of Delaware, Ohio. Their grandchidren, Hayden, Samuel, Camille and Flynn Olcott and Alanna Lawson complete the family.

Mr. Gresko married the former Margaret McDermott on July 20, 1968, at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown. The couple are members of St. Christine Church.

Mrs. Gresko was a department manager Mr. Gresko taught at South High School at JC Penney in Austintown until she re- and Volney Rogers and was employed with tired in 2007.

Mr. Murphy married the former May Waller July 27, 1969, at Immaculate Conception Church in Youngstown. The couple are members of New Springfield Church of God. Mrs. Murphy is a sales clerk for Love Thy Curves Plus Size Consignment Boutique in Boardman. She also is a member of Burden Bears for Hospice of Holy Family Women’s Club.

St. Brigid of Kildare Church in Columbus will be the setting for the couple’s wedding to take place at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 20. A reception will honor the couple later that day at the Hilton at Easton in Columbus.

Miss Eddingfield earned her bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy at John Carroll University and her graduate degree in that field from D’Youville University. She is an occupational therapist at Oakstone Academy in Dublin. and a graduate degree from Case Western Mr. Davis received his bachelor’s degree Reserve University. He is a certified public in accounting from John Carroll University accountant with Cardinal Health.
