Mary’s Pink Ribbon Racers Relay For Life team created a car show to gather proceeds for Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society on Sept. 23. Organizers Rick Kubik and his niece Mandy Comstock decided to host the event because t hey wanted to raise more money outside of their other
Relay For Life events. They named the team after Comstock’s grandmother, Mar y, who had breast cancer. Kubi k, a n Eag les Club member, got the Eagles Club to sponsor the event and allow Kubik to use their lot for the showcase. The Mark Cole Agency also sponsored the event and donated trophies for the event. Jeff Sheridan, also an Eagles
Club member, brought his nephew’s show cars. He had the “ECTO-1” car from the “Ghostbusters“ movie and the DeLorean from “Back to the Future.“ Other cars on display included Mustangs and other hot rods and classics, like the Ford’s Model T. They also had bikes and trucks at the event. Altogether, enthusiasts brought 70 vehicles to the show. Kubik and Comstock also
planned other things outside of the show. They organized a play area for children, which had a bounce castle. A live DJ played classic rock songs throughout the event. They set up a food and drink area. They also had a raffle and bake sale. All the proceeds went toward Relay For Life. They have only offerd this car show this year, but they want to make it an annual event.

Austintown Fitch Marching Band continued their tradition of using a military style in their appearance, marching style and song choice, and finished their show with “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
Bands march into season at Show of Bands event By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Canfield High School hosted its annual Show of Bands on Aug. 29 to a packed Cardinal Stadium. The night marked the 43rd year of Canfield’s Show of Bands. The performing bands were from the schools of Canfield, Struthers, West Branch, Poland, Champion, Austintown Fitch and Boardman. The Canfield “Cardinal Pride“ marching band took the field at seven for the opening ceremony, where the band played their alma mater, “Hang on Sloopy,“ and “The Star Spangled Banner.“ They marched off the field and Struthers marched on shortly after. Poland Seminary High School Marching Band performed third. They used a “Summer of Love” theme for the night, with songs such as “Good Vibrations“ by the Beach Boys and “White Rabbit“ by Jefferson Airplane. They opened with a combination of three songs, Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin’,“ The Who’s “I Can See For Miles“ and the Turtles’s “Happy Together.“ The band marched into a peace symbol during these songs. Outside of the theme, the band performed Demi Lovato’s “Confident.“ Band director Nick Olesko said that the band may head into a Disney oriented marching show by the middle of the football season. The PSHS Marching Band has 132 members. Olesko made the decision to perform without a field commander because the songs they played did not change
drastically enough to warrant needing field commanders. The band followed West Branch Marching Band and preceded Champion High School’s marching band. Austintown Fitch marched onto the field after Champion High School’s set. The marching band continued their tradition of using a military style in their appearance, marching style and song choice. The group opened with John Williams’s “March of 1941“ before going into the stylistically different songs “Malagueña” by Ernesto Lecuona and “Freebird“ by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The percussion stepped forward between the two tunes for the song “Max,“ which featured their section prominently. They closed their performance with the U.S.’s national march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever,“ which they have used to close their shows for more than 60 years. Austintown Fitch’s band includes 150 members. The school hosted the 46th annual Austintown Fitch Band Night the night prior. BanddirectorWesleyO’Connor said of the other bands, “All of my colleagues do a fantastic job in their programs.“ He also stated, “Everyone leaves a band night a winner, there are no losers.” T he Boa rd ma n Spa r t a n Marching Band proceeded Austintown Fitch. They played a number of popular radio songs, starting with three Van Halen hits, “You Really Got Me,“ “Eruption“ and “Jump.“ The band stood in the formation of the band’s “VH“ logo during these songs. A student jammed the guitar solo track, “Eruption,“ on his guitar
on the sideline. The songs also featured an electric bass and electronic keyboard. The Spartan band then moved to the more recent track “Uptown Funk“ by Bruno Mars, which featured the full marching band with musical additions from guitar, bass, keys and vocals. They followed this song with Harry Belafonte’s “Jump in the Line.“ Band parents and helpers prepared a stage toward the end of the Belafonte tune. They used this stage for their big finish, a series of melodies from Woodstock. The band played along with the guitar, bass, keys and drum set on the sideline near the stage. During these songs, members of the band came out dressed as the singers of the bands and sang the parts. The band played six songs from the festival, starting with “Going Up the Country“ by Canned Heat, then “Somebody to Love“ by Jefferson Airplane, “My Generation“ by The Who, “Piece of My Heart“ by Janis Joplin and “I Want to Take You Higher“ by Sly and the Family Stone, before finishing with Joe Cocker’s showstopping rendition of the Beatles tune, “With a Little Help From My Friends.“ Boardman’s band has 167 students, and are led by Thomas Ruggieri. They have played at the Show of Bands every year and host their own band night at Spartan Stadium. Canfield’s marching band closed the night with a series of dance hits, a theme they dubbed “Dancetopia.“ They opened with C+C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat,“ followed by Jennifer Lopez’s “On the Floor.“
Next, they moved from the dance floor to the silver screen with “Adelieland“ by John Powell from the movie “Happy Feet.“ The band went back to a radio hit on the next track, “Shut Up and Dance“ by Walk the Moon. The band used a more interesting way to introduce the song rather than just announcing the song over the speakers. Director Michael Kelly and the band participated in a call and response conversation wherein he told them to shut up, and they yelled “and dance!“ They finished their set with a couple of dance staples from the 1920s. First, the band performed “Hoe-Down“ from Aaron Copland’s ballet, “Rodeo.“ Members of the sideline percussion and color guard danced the hoedown while the band played. The group finished the night
with “Malagueña” by Ernesto Lecuona. Canfield marches with 160 members. Kelly has the band learning other popular dance hits for their future performances. These tunes include the classic “Twist and Shout“ by the Isley Brothers and “HandClap“ by Fitz and the Tantrums. Before Canfield went on, each band had their directors and band representatives come up in front of the crowd to receive a Show of Bands plaque and meet with the other bands’ representatives. The night commemorated the bands’ hard work learning the music and drills over the summer and a demonstration of what to expect from each band throughout the football season as each band hopes to get better and sharper.

Second Harvest Food Bank honor volunteers with Appreciation Day By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
The Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley celebrated their volunteers by hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Day on Aug. 26 at their facility on Salt Spring Road in Youngstown. The food bank gave food and drinks to volunteers who have worked with the food bank. They offered the lunch in the break room of their facility. The Cockeye BBQ catered the event, and the Giant Eagle Community Center donated cupcakes for the event. Approximately 100 volunteers attended the event. The vol-
unteers’ duties range from sorting and re-boxing food, answering phones and assisting with the food bank’s programs, such as the Mobile Pantry. “Our volunteers are our heroes,“ said Michael Iberis, executive director of the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. To honor this idea, the lunch took on a superhero theme, complete with Spiderman, Batman and Superman centerpieces on the tables. Some volunteers got into the spirit and dressed up as superheroes or wore superhero shirts. The Food Bank gets help from many different people and

groups. The ages of volunteers are from high school students to retirees. The shifts for volunteers run every Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until noon. They also have groups that volunteer Wednesday evenings from 5-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until noon. Linda Dean, a volunteer for two years, describes the experience as positive. She first started volunteering at the food bank once she moved into the area. She said everyone who worked with the food bank and volunteered had been “very welcoming“ and helpful. These volunteers worked with
the food bank for more than 14,000 hours in 2016. That same year, the food bank distributed 10.5 million pounds of food throughout Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. They fill nearly 15,000 food requests weekly for their 148 hunger-relief programs throughout the tri-county area. These programs, as listed on their website, include “church pantries, homeless shelters and soup kitchens, shelters for battered women and after-school programs that serve families, children, and seniors at risk of hunger.” The next large event that the food bank will be hosting is the
yearly event Taste of the Valley on Oct. 1. They have 22 restaurants that provide food and drinks at Stambaugh Auditorium for the event. Last year, Taste of the Valley brought out 500 supporters and raised more than $50,000, which equates to about 200,000 meals. For information about volunteering, contact the food bank’s volunteer coordinator Paige Tomlinson Miller at 330-7925522, ext. 102. The trolley tour of Mill Creek Parks on Aug. 25 took a stop to take a look at the “sugar shack” where Mill Creek Maple pure maple syrup is made.

before looping back around. Zocolo opened the trolley ride with some trivia about the general history of the park. Her first couple of questions revolved around Fellows Riverside Garden since the tour began there. For example, Elizabeth Fellows donated the land to Mill Creek park in 1958 to create a community garden. Then, her trivia dealt with Vol-
ney Rogers, the park’s founder. The trivia became about each area the trolley passed rather than the general history of the park. For instance, while at the Lily Pond, Zocolo explained where the Lily Pond’s nickname, “The Goldfish Pond,“ originated. According to the story, a police officer donated five goldfish to Volney Rogers for the newly opened pond. The trolley ride provided beautiful sights for the riders. Zocolo showed the tour group notable nature points in
the park, but occasionally, the trolley stopped for unplanned sights, such as a couple deer running through the woods and to look at the oldest continually lived in house in Youngstown, which resides next to the park. The group saw other wildlife on the tour as well, including squirrels and a heron. Other information and history about Mill Creek can be found on their website, millcreekmetroparks.org, or on Zocolo’s other tours. She plans to host tours more often in 2018.

Austintown’s Concert in Park series concludes with rockin’ band Soundbite by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Austintown Township Park finished their Concert in the Park series on Aug. 22 with classic rock cover band Soundbite. The Shenango Valley group opened with Van Halen’s “Beautiful Girls,“ and then stopped to introduce the next song, John Mellencamp’s “Hurts So Good.“ The show followed this pattern where the band would stop and talk or joke before going into the next song. The band had Joe Weinel as the lead singer, Maureen Murray on the keyboard, Tom Davies keeping rhythm on the bass, Tom Shaffer playing guitar and T.J. Costanza on the drums. Most members of the band had an opportunity to show off their skills. Weinel sang most of the songs, but on Free’s “All Right Now,“ he got to play the claves
along with the rhythm section. Murray laid down some heavy synth and keyboard parts with a songs like “Too Much Time on My Hands“ by Styx, and she sang a couple tunes like Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me with Your Best Shot.“ Costanza mentioned his distaste for AC/DC after having played “You Shook Me All Night Long,“ but he showed his love for The Cars when he drummed and sang for their cover of “Just What I Needed.“ Shaffer may not have sang any songs, but he displayed his guitar shredding abilities on numerous songs, especially “Pride and Joy“ by Stevie Ray Vaughn. Davies, Weinel, Costanza and Murray demonstrated their ability to harmonize on songs like “Bad Company“ by Bad Company. Soundbite’s show finished off this year’s Concert in the Park series at Austintown Township Park.
