Members of the Canfield community came together at the Canfield Community Tailgate Party Sept. 25. Taking place on the outdoor basketball courts at Canfield High School, the tailgate party was a collaboration of Canfield Local Schools and was planned by the Communications Committee. “This tailgate party is for the entire school district. We wanted to build on the elementary tailgate parties from last year and wanted to include all schools, and the community, this year,” said Marci Muckleroy, tailgate chairperson. Cardinal spirit was provided by the Canfield High School varsity, junior varsity and freshmen cheerleaders, CHS marching band, CHS choir members, as well as the Canfield Little Cardinals cheerleaders. dens will be held at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9:30-11 a.m. or 5:30-7 p.m. on Oct. 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 29. The cost is $12 a class. Bring your own mat and a small blanket.
Bells Across America is a national movement to commemorate Constitution Week. This year, the Canfield Village Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade girls volleyball team participated via smartphone. Instead of actual bells, Erin Angelo, volleyball coach and DAR member said that she asked her players to download a free bell app onto their phones to participate in Bells Across America in a more modern style. In 1955, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) asked Congress to designate Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week. In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law. Bells Across America commemorated this historic week.

On Sept. 18, what was supposed to be a lesson on weather and clouds turned into an impromptu lesson on porcupines. Lori Shindle and her transitional kindergarten students at Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten had an interesting lesson. One of her students, Braden Meshula, came into class with a porcupine quill and a fascinating story that his grandfather was surprised by a porcupine on his property in Greenford. Since porcupines aren’t an animal seen every day, Mrs. Shindle pulled up some interesting facts and videos of porcupines on the smart board in her classroom. Pictured, from left, are Gabriel West, Meshula, Samantha Snyder, Guiliana Leonard and Nicholas Hartwig.

Certified quilting teacher At the September guild meeting of That Quilt Group I Belong To, the group congratulated member Ginger Mangie on her recent certification as a National Quilting Association certified teacher. According to NQA, each teaching applicant must demonstrate their own quilting skills and classroom organization, as well as their teaching in the areas of quilt design, piecing, applique, quilting, quilt finishing and quilt history. Each applicant must be able to perform skills by both hand and machine. It is not an easy task to meet the NQA’s criteria. NQA’s 45-year existence makes it the oldest, nonprofit membership based quilting organization in the United States. NQA is a professional quilting organization which operates exclusively for the continuance of its charitable mission, strong programing and the promotion of the art of quilting. Their mission is to honor their heritage and continually reinvent themselves to meet the needs of their membership. Visitors are welcome to join TQGIBT at Fair Park in Canfield. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting beginning at 7 p.m. TQGIBT is open to all quilters in the Mahoning Valley, at all skill levels. Meetings usually take place at Fair Park on the third Tuesday of each month, with some exceptions. Family Fun Friday at Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a special season-themed day surrounding apples. Lynn Zocolo led the activities with various volunteers of Mill Creek MetroParks. Children had the opportunity to taste test different kinds of apples, identify and learn the parts of an apple, participate in a scavenger hunt around the garden, plant begonias and dig for treasures. Zocolo said she enjoyed seeing the children dig in the gardens most of all. “It’s fun for them to actually get their hands dirty while they’re here,” Zocolo said. Volunteer Mary Kay Wrenn said she had a few students who brought their plants home from Family Fun Fridays made them into gardens. “It’s so nice to hear that they are planting these plants at home,” Zocolo said. Wrenn said she appreciated the practice the students take home and come back with those skills, ready to further their gardening skills.

Canfield Village Middle School quarterback Ethan Fletcher (9) sprints through the Boardman Center line. The CVMS seventh-grade football team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 20-0 win against Boardman Center Middle School. Canfield moved 65 yards in seven plays on their opening possession with Dom Magliocca finishing off the drive when he took a Fletcher aerial and sprinted 24 yards to paydirt. Canfield struck again late in the first half when Fletcher found Tony Panunnzio streaking down the seam for a 15yard touchdown and a 12-0 Canfield lead.

Canfield Village Middle School tailback Logan Torok cuts behind the block of Hunter Mcombs (67). The Cardinals extended the lead in the third quarter when Fletcher sprinted 18 yards around right end on an option play for six points. Fletcher rolled right and found conner Hritz in the end zone for the conversion and the final margin. Canfield’s defense posted their fourth shutout of the season behind the play of Panunnzio who had an interception. Gianni Gaetano who had a fumble recovery, and Torok who had several tackes in the Spartan backfield. The defensive front of Nick Hewko, Anthony Orr, Donny Syrianoudis and Michael Minnenok led the charge keeping Boardman from registering a first down until the fourth quarter.
