Watercolor artist meets with AIS art class by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Chris Leeper, artist and professor at Youngstown State University, v isited Jennifer Houston’s fifth-grade art class at Austintown Intermediate School on Oct. 4. Houston, a former student of Leeper, invited him to her class after having shown the students some of his work. She said the

students thought Leeper’s watercolor paintings were photographs. She brought him in to show her students that he actually painted the artwork she showed her class. Leeper began by introducing himself. He began painting professionally in 2000. He even illustrated some children’s books for the Smithsonian. He displayed the full size paintings of

his work next to the illustrations in the book. He talked about the process of painting for those books with the children. He held up other paintings that he worked on. He paints parts of the community, such as Belle Vista in Youngstown and portions of Mill Creek MetroParks. He also explained the painting competitions he participates in.

After he talked to the students, he painted for them. Houston told him that they had done sunset watercolor paintings earlier in the year, so he painted a sunset scene. He outlined his scenery at first and took suggestions from the class. He then started to paint the sky in yellows and oranges. See ARTIST, Page 4

Austintown citizen Virginia Volpe has been with the local Naval Sea Cadet Corps, the Knighthawks, for three years and has reached the rank of petty officer. She is pictured with her father, Joe Volpe, and a booklet of her achievements with the Knighthawks.

Local Naval Sea Cadet program offers unique opportunities by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Petty Officer Virginia Volpe, 14, of Austintown and other cadets went to monthly training on Sept. 10 at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna, Ohio as members of the local U.S. Naval Sea Cadets Corps (USNSCC). Volpe belongs to the Knighthawks, the squadron that meets at the air reserve in Vienna. She had always been interested in the military, but her interest grew while at a Browns game where they honored the women in the military during pregame.

Her father, Joe Volpe, assumed that the family would need to travel for his daughter to become a Naval cadet. He was surprised to see how close the Knighthawks trained. Without any travel issues, he signed her up. The Knighthawks, as stated on their website, offer training for the Navy League Cadet Corps for children 11 to 14 and USNSCC training for young people aged 13 to 18. Their instruction covers general military training to more specific training such as culinary, robotics and scuba training.

A commander congratulated Volpe after an award ceremony at Camp Perry in Port Clinton, OH where she won Honor Cadet for petty officer leadership advancement.

Virigina Volpe has been in the cadets program for three years and plans to train in the medical area. She has also had training in underwater drone robotics and master-at-arms. She will test for petty officer, second class in October. The rank obtained at the end of the program will carry over to the Navy. “She is the perfect example of leading by example,“ said Lieutenant Commander Douglas Cabarle, commanding officer of the Knighthawks Squadron. He said that she works hard and always goes the extra mile. He also said he has a great deal of confidence in her. Volpe and fellow Cadet Chris Grahovic were the most senior cadets present at the drill, meaning that they took charge over the younger, less experienced cadets. For example, when they lined up for a picture, the two of them walked around and corrected the other cadet’s stances. Her fellow cadets also view Volpe as a leader and an example. Grahovic said that he hopes others see in him the amount of accountability he sees in her. Cadet Nicolas Mahan called her a great leader, and Cadet Haley Buckley said she has great ideas. All three cadets said they strive to be like her and reiterated Cabarle’s sentiment of her hard work. Cabarle said the USNSCC program focuses on creating better citizens, not on recruiting for the Navy. As commander, he aims to instill respect and leadership qualities in his ca-

dets. Because the program offers so much training in various fields, he said none of his cadets leave the program at 18 without a plan for the future. Volpe demonst rates t hat Cabarle’s statement rings true. She plans to head to the Naval Academy and study in the medical field upon graduating. Joe Volpe finds the program com for t i ng a s h is daug hter heads into high school at Austintown Fitch. He called the program amazing and said he feels confident that she “will go down the right path” in life, as the program promotes respect and hard work. Cabarle emphasized the cadets’ lives at home and in school. He said that their “schoolwork is paramount” and that they need passing grades to remain in the program. He wants his cadets to have a critical thinking perspective and follow their maxim, which states, “I will not lie, cheat or steal nor tolerate those among us that do.“ Virginia Volpe said that she has had no issues balancing her cadet training and schooling. She earned Honor Cadet at her Petty Officer Leadership Advancement training. The USNSCC began in 1958, and t he K night hawks unit opened in 2008. Commander Cabarle will retire in October and Victor Rogers will take over. For more information on the Knighthawks, visit their website at http://www.knighthawksquadron.org/.

Discussions abound at Chapter Chat book club By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Austintown librar y had a Chapter Chat Book Club meeting on Aug. 30 to discuss Gene Luen Yang’s “American Born Chinese.“ Andrea Zupcsan, Austintown librarian, moderated the discussion on the graphic novel. The members of the club all listen and talk respectfully and thoughtfully, so Zupcsan does less of leading the discussion and instead joins in on the discourse. The beginning of the conversation started on whether or not each member of the group liked the book or not. Most enjoyed the book, noting that the book uses literary techniques, even though the book is a graphic novel. For example, the book utilizes symbolism and allusions to ancient Chinese mythology. Others did not enjoy the book for similar reasons. They did not like symbolic separation from reality. They felt the twist in reality took away from what could have been a true story. The story covers Yang’s life growing up in America after moving from China at a young age. The book deals with ste-

reotyping in America, feelings of being different and troubles between trying to assimilate to American life and keeping his Chinese heritage. Members of the group drew comparisons between Yang’s story and the work of Sherman Alexie, a prominent American Indian writer. Though most in the group do not regularly read graphic novels, no one had any complaints about the medium of the nar-

rative. Instead, the group responded positively to the creative and intelligent panels throughout the novel. The book club found many of the stereotypical depictions to be jarring but effective. The group has been together since January 2016 and usually gets seven to ten people at each event. To join the club, call Austintown library or talk to one of their librarians.

Mill Creek helps those with mobility challenges By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Mill Creek Park hosted an event to encourage those with mobility challenges to walk the East Golf Hike Bike Trail on Aug. 31. Dr. Nicole Mullins created the “Let’s Move! A Walk for Those w it h Mobilit y Cha llenges“ event for those who may have any troubles walking. Mullins, a doctor of exercise science at Youngstown State University, brought her students to help encourage people to walk the trail and live healthy lifestyles. “Even if it hurts, it’s better to move,“ she said. She brought papers to pass out with research information on it. She explained that walking and moving will help both physically and emotionally, as exercise positively affects moods. Mullins own bilateral hip dysplasia injury inspired her to make an event to help people with other movement challenges. She had trouble moving but needed to work to get herself back into walking shape. During this time, she could only walk a little and used walking poles to take pressure off her pain points. She also found another program called “Walk with a Doc,“ set up for those with movement challenges to walk and also have someone present to answer their questions. While not doctors, Mullins and her students have information on exercise and health to help others.

Neighbors | Zack Shively

Dr. Nicole Mullins lent out her walking poles to a walker who wanted to see if they helped her relieve some pain while walking during “Let’s Move! A Walk for Those with Mobility Challenges” at the East Golf Hike Bike Trail on Aug. 31.

Carol Vigorito, the Recreation and Education Director of Mill Creek Metroparks, discussed how the program first got started. She said that Mullins had contacted Mill Creek through email asking to create the event. Vigorito said that the parks were happy to collaborate on this fantastic opportunity. Mullins does not expect everyone to go the same amount because everyone has different abilities and health. Instead, she asks that everyone puts forth effort and walks as much as they want. The walkers should create their own goals after seeing what their current abilities are.

The group welcomes anyone who wants to walk to join. She explained that a walker in the past had worried about feeling silly about getting out and walking, so Mullins puts forth effort to help alleviate that worry. Her students help anyone on a walk and placed encouraging messages along the trail. More information on the group and the event can be found at Mill Creek Park’s event page at www.millcreekmetroparks.org/ events/. The group welcomes anyone no matter the mobility need, stating that walkers may use canes, walking poles or other equipment.

Boys soccer defeats South Range The Austintown Fitch boys soccer team won 5-2 on Oct. 3 against an injury plagued South Range team. South Range was missing their leading scorer, Brandon Youngs (18 goals, 10 assists), and Canaan Johnson (two goals, nine assists). It was the Raiders scoring first seven minutes in when Charlie Staffield lofted a header just under the bar. Fitch rattled off three in a row when Blake Baker scored off a great pass from Dom Foley, Foley scored a rebound goal after a great run and

shot by CJ Sobien, and Baker tallied his second goal off a Mitch Desiato freekick. Just before the half South Range brought it to within one goal when Luke McConnell scored off of a Mitch McConnell pass. Fitch tacked on another two goals in the second half by Sobien and Baker to give the Falcons the win.
