Annual Survivor Run raises awareness By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The fourth annual Survivor Run, organized by Megan Hruska, took place at Buckeye Horse Park on Sept. 30. Hruska, a life-long horse enthusiast, started the Survivor Run in honor of breast cancer survivors, including her mother Sallie Sullivan. “My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer October of 2013, and her recent diagnosis revealed her cancer has spread to her bones and now to her liver. This year’s theme at Survivor Run is the ‘Derby.’ Friends and family voted online earlier this year to have her entered into a contest to fulfill an amazing bucket list item. My mom and dad won tickets to the Kentucky Oaks and friends and family helped me get them tickets to the Kentucky Derby this past May,” Hruska said. The Survivor Run consisted of a six-mile trail ride and a 12mile trail ride to help spread awareness of early breast cancer detection and to get others involved in Sullivan’s passion for riding. Approx imately 40 riders, decked out in pink and some in elaborate Derby hats, participated in this year’s Survivor Run. Not only were the riders
and volunteers deck out in pink, but the horses were too, with pink manes, pink tails, pink ribbons and pink blankets. “This event is to bring awareness to early detection and to share the love and passion my mother has for competitive trail riding. We also want to expose young riders to the sport so they can keep it going. We weren’t really focusing on raising money, but last year, thanks to our riders and generous donations, we raised $2,000 for the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center to support Joanie’s Promise Fund, which is my mother’s treatment center. This year’s proceeds will also be donated to the center,” Hruska said. The event also featured a Chinese auction, with donations from members of the riding community. “Donations for the Chinese auction just poured in from our rider community. They have been so generous with their support and we thank them for that,” Hruska said. Hruska said early detection is key in battling breast cancer. “We want people to be aware about early detection. Everyone needs to be checked yearly. The sooner you are checked the easier it is to treat,” Hruska said.

New gifts drive junior fair and event center closer to goal The Canfield Fair Foundation announced nine leadership gifts and one anonymous gift all totaling $950,000, bringing the total raised in the Capital Campaign to slightly more than $2,000,000. The latest gifts include an anonymous $200,000 challenge gift, where the donor will match dollar for dollar up to $200,000 in support of the new Junior Fair Coliseum and year-round event center. The Campaign has also received a leadership gift from the John S. and Delores M. Andrews Trust, as well as additional gifts from the Youngstown Foundation, Farmers National Bank, a gift honoring Ray and Mildred Hendricks, Hollywood Gaming, the Ralph Witmer Family, Leonard Truck and Trailer, the Brian Benyo Family and Ohio Ag Equipment. “We are thrilled with the community’s response thus far to the Capital Campaign,” Andy Frost, President of the Canfield Fair Board, said. “We have never asked the community for money and this new world-class building was more than we could do by ourselves. This project is a true partnership, all centered on 4H and FFA kids and a building that will be used year round.” The Capital Campaign is led by its four honorary co-chairs George Berlin, Joe Dickey, Don Snyder and David Myers. There is already much interest in the new building. “In addition to housing the kids and their animals during the Fair, the building has generated so much interest we have people wanting to sign contracts for future dates,” Dave Dickey, Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee and Canfield Fair Foundation Chairman, said. In February the Fair launched the $4.5 million Capital Campaign in support of building of a new 81,000-square foot Jr. Fair Coliseum and year-round Exposition Center. The multipurpose facility will be heated and air-conditioned for year-round use and include a full catering kitchen. The project is in response to the explosive growth of the number of youth joining 4H and FFA programs. The Canfield Fair Board of Directors led the campaign with a pledge of $400,000 toward the project. For more information on the Fair or the capital campaign, visit www.canfieldfair.com or call the Canfield Fair at 330-533-4107.

Children enjoy story time at Canfield library By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The Canfield library hosted its weekly Baby Brilliant: Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s, with Romie Policy, Youth Services, leading the program Sept. 12. With the theme ‘Days of the Week,’ Policy featured books and songs which focused on the subject. “Our theme today is ‘Days of the Week.’ Every day has a name, just like you have a name,” Policy said. Policy started the story time with the book, “Lola at the Library.” While reading the book, she asked the children to join her in singing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” W it h s h a k e r s i n h a nd , the children then listened to “Loopty Loo,” a song with days of the week lyrics, and used hand movements to ‘dance’ to the music. Next, Policy read a rhyme which incorporated the days of the week. Policy continued the theme with the book “Every Friday.” She then played a song “Today is Monday” and had the children follow along by showing them pictures from the Eric Carle book of the same name. Policy then read the book, ‘Saturday’ to the children. “Saturday is a fun day when a lot of people don’t have to go to work and get to do fun things with their family,” Policy said. To end the story time, Policy read the children “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” When Policy was finished, she invited the children and their parents to participate in a craft. “We have a craft set up on the

a 6-0 lead. The Cardinal’s drive was kept alive by a key fourth down run by fullback Dom Marzano and 15-yard toss from Broc Lowry to Ryan Schneider. Lowry bulled over the goal line from two yards out for the touchdown. Canfield received the second half kickoff and drove 65 yards in 10 plays to extend
their lead. Lowr y found tight end AJ Havrilla for a 30 yard gain to the Spartan 12 and Lowry snuck in from the one for a 12-0 Cardinal advantage. Lowry scored his third touchdown of the night when he picked off a wayward Glenwood aerial and sprinted 70 yards to paydirt. Boardman
scored in the games waning moments for the final margin. The Cardinal defensive front of Hunter Kanotz, Mateo Riccardi, Aiden Rogers, Antonio Gonzalez and Havrilla were cited for their stellar play along with linebackers Evan Parker, Caden Kohout, Marzano and Schneider.
