Guest speaker for the September meeting of the Austintown Friends of the Library was Jim Sutman from ISLE and the Golden String, among a group of agencies that work with developmentally disabled adults in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties, now expanding into Mercer County and Western Pennsylvania. Other branches of the group serve food at Oakhill Renaissance Center operate a candy store in downtown Youngstown, a farm in Coitsville Township, a radio station and gardens on Pearl Street. Starting with one man, they now service close to 500 clients. Their goal is to make a better life possible for those who need some help. TQGIBT presents Shop Owners Night A variety of local businesses representing quilt shops, needlework shops, independent 31 reps and others will bring their wares to TQGIBT – That Quilt Group I Belong To - for Shop Owners Night on Oct. 20. Alumni Association winners Winners of the Austintown Alumni Association’s annual raffle were drawn at the Sports Hall of Fame game on Oct. 2. The first prize winner of $500 cash was Emily Zokle.

The second prize basket worth $400 in local gift cards and sports passes was won by Melissa Crowley. The third prize winner of a $50 gift certificate to Rachel’s Restaurant and a $50 gift certificate to the Manor Restaurant was Margie Goldner. The Alumni Association uses profits from the raffle to award scholarships to graduating Fitch seniors and to support mini grants for classroom instruction throughout the school system. Membership in the Alumni Association is $10 and is open to all Austintown graduates as well as friends and faculty of Austintown Schools. Charity run raises money for Autism The Autism Society of Ohio office, the regional affiliate of the Autism Society of America, received a donation from a growing charity motorcycle run.

More than 60 motorcyclists raised $2,005 during the Third Annual Mike Hull Memorial Ride for Autism on Aug. 22.

Mel issa Ka la ma n, event chairperson and sister of the memorial namesake, and her committee presented the check to Autism Society of Ohio Mahoning Valley Office Director Aundrea Cika.

“We are very grateful for the incredible support of our family and friends who rode and for all of those who volunteered, donated or sponsored this event,” said Kalaman. “We are looking forward to growing this run into a must-do event for bikers and helping families with the proceeds.”

Cika said that she was happy with the charity run.

“This year’s run was phenomenal, uniting so many of us in the common goal of supporting families living with an autism diagnosis,” Cika said. “We are honored to be partners with this loving and giving family for this annual event.”

the event will be used to expand a family mini-grant holiday program for Mahoning Valley autism families that may otherwise go without. Applications will be available in late October.

The tri-county motorcycle ride was created in 2013 in honor of Mike Hull. Hull was a be-

loved husband, father, brother and grandfather. His granddaughter, whom he cherished, is on the Autism spectrum. He was also a musician who often donated his time and talent to organizations in need. The allday event featured an 80-mile motorcycle ride that visited six establishments in Mahoning

and Columbiana counties. It kicked off with a breakfast and bike blessing and ended with a live concert and pasta dinner. Throughout the day, Strikers offered free bowling for any children or adults with special needs.

Planning is underway for the next event in August 2016.

Happily Ever After Tanya Cummings v Stephen Ray Tanya Lanell Cummings and Stephen Ray were married Aug. 14 at the gazebo in Fellows Riverside Gardens. The Rev. Adam Stevens officiated at the 4:30 p.m. ceremony. A reception followed at A La Cart Catering in Canfield.

The bride, daughter of Wilma and Kenneth Cummings of North Little Rock, Ark., attended Alamo Community College in San Antonio for two years.

The groom, son of Elizabeth and John Ray of Austintown, is a graduate of Youngstown State University, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science. He is employed as a forensic scientist in the trace evidence section of Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock.

The bride’s gown was satin and lace tulle with a floor-length train.

The maid of honor was Michelle Ray, the groom’s sister-in-law. Bridesmaids were Ariel Cummings and Ashley Cummings, the bride’s daughters; Heather Taylor, the groom’s cousin; and nieces of the groom, Ashley Ray and Madelyn Ray. Makenna Ray and Amanda Ray, the groom’s nieces, were flower girls.

The attendants wore royal blue dresses.

Miss Kawecki,Mr. Felgenhauer date set Kellie Nicole Kawecki and James Aaron Felgenhauer, both of Canfield, are planning to be married Oct. 17 at Halliday Winery in Lake Milton.

Parents of the bride-elect are Lawrence and Teresa Kawecki of North Jackson.

Michelle Felgenhauer of Alliance is the mother of the future groom.

Miss Kawecki earned a bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies from Kent State University. She works for Family Community Services in Lisbon and General Motors in Lordstown.

Mr. Felgenhauer earned a certificate in HVAC from Fortis College and works for APEX Control Systems Inc. in Sebring.

Miss Zocolo, Mr. Rodriguez to wed in Florida

Julia Ann Zocolo and Jaime Andre Rodriguez, both of Miami, are engaged and will wed on Oct. 17.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Thomas Zocolo of Boardman and Anna Zocolo of Liberty. The prospective groom is the son of Jaime Rodriguez and Marlen Parra of Bogota, Colombia.

The couple will exchange vows at 7 p.m. at St. Hugh’s Catholic Church, and a reception will follow at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, both in Coconut Grove, Fla. Miss Zocolo earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation management from Ohio University and master’s degree in business administration from Nova Southeastern University.

She is an administrative assistant at getabstract Inc. in Aventura, Fla. Mr. Rodriguez received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Florida InterDr. Glenn W. Ray was best man for his national University and a master’s degree He is a business development associate brother. Phil and Phyllis Simmers of Canfield marked the 50th anniversary of their wedding Aug. 21 at a buffet dinner at A La Cart Catering.

The couple have two children, Brian (Jennifer) Simmers of Wyoming and Susan Simmers of Florida, and a grandson, Jack.

Mrs. Simmers, the former Phyllis Allen, and Mr. Simmers were married Aug. 21, 1965, at Canfield United Methodist Church.

An evening reception followed at the Bertram Inn in Aurora, Ohio.

The bride is the daughter of Dr. Scott and Sandi Agnew of Boardman, and the groom is the son of Michael and Tracy Stackpole of North Canton.

Honor attendant was Christa Serluco, and bridesmaids were Kristen Lippert and Jenna Agnew, sisters of the bride; and Meredith Kroeger. Maggie Stackpole, the groom’s sister, served as the flower girl.

Nathan Rees served as the best man, and groomsmen were Keith Dahlstein, Jim Gnecco and Mack Monegan. The groom’s brothers, Anthony and Nathan Stackpole, served as ushers.

On Sept. 10, Woodlands at AustinWoods had a quarter auction to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Being a proud provider of elder care services in the Mahoning Valley, Woodlands saw the need to help advocate and raise awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease and soon became a part of the Mahoning Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Looking for fun ways to spread awareness and raise donations, Woodlands decided to plan a quarter auction. Nicole Cirbus, Marketing Director for Woodlands, began reaching out to local organizations for donations months before the auction event and the response of donations was overwhelming. Local organizations donated gift cards, gift baskets, jewelry, services, cash and other items to Woodlands quarter auction. Items donated ranged in value of $10$2,600, with all proceeds from the event going directly to the Alzheimer’s Association. The auction drew more than 100 people the night of the event.

It was exciting to see the tremendous support of people in the community, all gathering for the same cause. Woodlands exceeded their fundraising goal by raising $3,000, which has all been donated to the Alzheimer’s Association. This year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s will took place on Oct. 10 at the YSU WATTS Center. Harold Porter, current school board member for Austintown Local Schools and business partner of Austintown Bounce, announced his candidacy for reelection for the school board.

Porter is a lifelong resident of Austintown with not only background from attending the schools himself, but also the only sitting board member with children in Austintown Schools — he has five children in Austintown Intermediate School, Austintown Middle School and Austintown Fitch High School. In addition, Porter’s wife is a teacher at AMS, another direct recipient of the fight for better schools.

His investment in improving the schools is a driving force that keeps him wanting to remain on the board.

Residents of the Commons at Greenbriar Frances and John Seffner recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on Aug. 23.

The two share quite a story of the loss and finding of their wedding rings in their garden, binding them to one another throughout the years.

Frances met her husband after WWII at a friendly gathering in town when he asked her to dance.

“It was just a neighborhood dance, that’s all there was, but oh what it seemed to be,” Seffner said.

Frances lost her diamond ring while doing household chores, which John replaced with a simple gold band. Over the years, John offered to replace the ring, which Frances declined, feeling terrible about the loss of such a momentum of their lives together.

The rings ended up shining through the garden, where they were somehow buried.

“You have some happy times and there’s some sad times, but you overlook t he bad times and remember the good times,” Seffner said. “Those are the times that you wanna have children to remember them.”

Youngstown State University’s softball team walked onto the field with guest teammate Joan Roepke on Sept. 18 for their game against Kent State University.

Shepherd of the Valley brought a surprised resident Joan Roepke to the field, an old dream she had during her countless years of both playing and coaching

girls softball.

Jerry Roepke, Joan’s son, said he was happy to see something so great happen to his mother.

“It’s one of the better things that’s ever happened in my mom’s life,” Jerry said.

Ruth Ellen Roepke, Jerry Roepke’s wife and Joan’s daughter-inlaw, said she didn’t even know Joan played or coached softball until recently. Joan has the reputation of being quite modest, as those who weren’t around dur-

ing the time of her softball career don’t know much about it.

“She never gets her picture taken, never talks about herself,” Ruth Ellen Roepke said.

YSU softball player Cali Mikovich found this experience to not only be great for Joan, but also for herself.

“This is so cool, it makes me happy that somebody like this has their dream it still lives on — and this was our dream,” Mikovich said.

Cardinal Mooney varsity volleyball von against Austintown Fitch on Oct. 12, 3-1 with the scores of 2518, 18-25, 25-18 and 25-21. For Cardinal Mooney, Maddie Abrigg had 16 kills, Maria Pelini had 28 assists and Marcell Adams had 18 digs. For Austintown Fitch, Sarah Obradovich had 21 kills, nine points, three aces and 16 digs; Rachael Difrancesco had four blocks; Maya Martin had 14 assists and Keara Katcher had 10 points, 11 digs and 29 serve receptions.

Boys soccer ties with Canfield On Oct. 8, the Austintown boys varsity soccer team tied with Canfield, 1-1. Kyle Cyphert scored the goal for Austintown and Tanor Engligh scored for Canfield with an assist from Justin Montazeri. Canfield took nine shots and Fitch took 19. Jeff Joseph had 12 saves for Canfield and Fitch had eight saves.

Canfield’s record is not 8-3-2 for the season and 5-2-2 in the AAC Red. Fitch’s record is 10-2-2 for the season and 6-1-2 in the AAC Red.
