Nektarios Kasamias (right) participated in the High School Diplomats program in August. The High School Diplomats program is a cultural exchange program that takes place at Princeton University. The program brings together 40 students from Japan and 40 American students for 10 days of culture, language, diplomacy and friendship. The program is free, but selective. Each night of the program had a different theme that helped facilitate cultural exchange. Some theme days were Spirit Day, the Japanese Culture Festival, the American Culture Festival, Halloween, Olympic Day and Date Night. These nights gave rise to great memories and taught the students a lot about each other. One of the best things Kasamias said he took from the program was the relationship he formed with his roomate, Yuta (pictured on the left). The High School Diplomats 2016 program will take place from July 27-Aug. 6. Applications are now open and due on Jan. 8. Interviews will be conducted in March, and applicants will be notified of their status by mid-April. The application and more information can be found at www.highschooldiplomats.com.

Jutta Graf lectures at Boardman Park about holistic medicine More people are searching for solutions through holistic medicine. On this quest, many people rediscover a completely natural path. As part of an international lecture series, there will be a lecture in Youngstown on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at The Boardman Park at The Gerogeanna Parker Center, located at 375 Boardman-Poland Road in Boardman, on the topic of “Healing on the Spiritual Path — Medically Verifiable.” Guest speaker Jutta Graf, member of the International Leaders of the Circle of Friends, will be in attendance. Admission is free, but a donation is appreciated. All individuals from medical professions, everyone interested in this current topic and especially anyone searching for help and healing is invited. The ancient civilizations of humanity spoke of the existence of a higher power that can help and heal. Bruno Groening (1906–1959) called this power

“Heilstrom” or healing force. Among other things, he taught how one can absorb this natural healing power. The healings, even of so called incurable diseases, are occurring today as they did during that time. A multitude of medically documented healing reports demonstrate this. In this lecture, such documented healings will be presented and healed individuals will report about their experiences. The healing power can be experienced during the lecture. The Medical Scientific Group of the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends organizes information lectures in more than 100 countries worldwide. The speaker is a volunteer who hosts the lecture in her spare time. The Bruno Groening Circle of Friends is non-profit organization. All activities are financed through voluntary donations. Further information is available at www.bruno-groening. org/english or contact Arlene Barkan at 330-372-3144.

Melissa Kalaman, event chairperson and sister of the memorial namesake, and her committee presented the check to Autism Society of Ohio Mahoning Valley Office Director Aundrea Cika. “We are very grateful for the incredible support of our family and friends who rode and for all of those who volunteered, donated or sponsored this event,” said Kalaman. “We are looking forward to growing this run into a must-do event for bikers and helping families with the proceeds.” Cika said that she was happy with the charity run. “This year’s run was phenomenal, uniting so many of us in the common goal of supporting families living with an autism diagnosis,” Cika said. “We are honored to be partners with this loving and giving family for this

Spartans place second at Mahoning County Boardman’s Ethan Schwendeman and Chris Butler raced to fourth and fifth place finishes out of 149 competitors to lead the Spartans to a second place finish at The Mahoning County Cross Country Championship on Sept. 29 at a rainy and muddy Austintown Township Park. Boardman finished behind state ranked and host school Austintown Fitch. Poland was third overall with Canfield, West Branch, South Range, Ursuline, Jackson-Milton, Sebring and Lowellville completing the teams that ran. Cardinal Mooney, Western Re-

serve, Springfield and Struthers did not field enough athletes to qualify in the team standings. The Spartans placed seven runners in the top 30 and placed three of the top 15 scoring spots to earn runners up; following Schwendeman and Butler was junior Nathaniel Ams in 14th place in a time of 18:22. They were followed by junior Nick Digiacomo in 21st in a time of 18:38, sophomore Mark Moradian 22nd overall in 18:42, sophomore Luke Hetzel in 27th place at 18:51, and senior Adam Deeley in 28th in a time of 18:51. “We really wanted to chal-

lenge Fitch today,” said Spartan head coach John Phillips. “The course conditions really made it difficult to run fast, but I am very satisfied with our effort and improvement the last two weeks since the Spartan Invitational. Fitch has a team ranked anywhere from 10th to 15th in Ohio this year, and we need to keep pace with them in order to make a run at districts.” Setting new personal bests at the Austintown course were Hetzel, sophomore Tony Saab at 20:53 and freshman Andrew Beichner at 20:59.

BHS varsity beats Warren Harding The Boa rdma n Spa r ta ns stunned the Warren Harding Raiders on Oct. 9 with a touchdown in the last five seconds of play to win the game 18-14. The Spartans scored first in game as Adam Deeley kicked a 32-yard field goal. With 19 seconds left in the first quarter, Harding scored to put the game at 7-3 heading into the second quarter of play. Harding scored again to put the Raiders up 14-3 but with three seconds left on the clock Deeley made a 27-yard field goal to put the halftime score at 14-6. In the third quarter, Koby Adu-Poku scored on a one-yard run with 47 seconds left in the quarter to push the score to 1412 heading into the final quar-

ter. That touchdown was set up by a long pass from quarterback J.R. Ryan to Travis Koontz to put the ball on the 1-yard line. In the fourth quarter the Boardman defense stopped Harding on a fourth and five at the Boardman 21-yard line. Then the Spartans went on a drive of 53-yards led by Adu-Poku who carried the ball 12 times on the drive for 53-yards. That helped set up a Deeley field goal opportunity from the Raiders 12-yard line with five seconds left in the game. As Deeley attempted the kick, it was blocked by the Raiders behind the line of scrimmage. The Raiders ran to the opposite end zone to celebrate while fireworks were going off

in the background with the crowd thinking the Raiders had won. But the ball was still alive and the Spartan’s Gavin Strines alertly picked up the ball and returned it for a touchdown as time ran out and the Spartans won 18-14. Leading the way offensively for the Spartans was Adu-Poku with 112-yards on 26 carries. Ryan completed four out of nine passing attempts for 65-yards with Koontz on the end of two completions for 46-yards. The entire Spartan defense kept the high scoring Raiders to just 14 points, one of the lowest point totals for them all season. The win moved the Spartans up to number seven in their region.

Spartan football beats Canfield The Spartans won their third game of the season by defeating the Canfield Cardinals by a score of 10-0 on Oct. 2. It was the first time the Spartans and Cardinals have played each other since 1985. The game was scoreless at the end of the first half before the Spartans scored 10 points in the third quarter. Senior Mario Gra-

ziani scored Boardman’s touchdown with a 40-yard run and senior Adam Deeley kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Deeley then kicked a 35-yard field goal with 90 seconds left in the third quarter to complete the scoring for the Spartans. For Boardman, Graziani led the Spartans rushing for 221-yards on 37 carries.

Quarterback J.R. Ryan threw for 59-yards completing seven out of 12 attempts. Senior Travis Koontz caught two passes for 30-yards. The Spartans had 13 first downs while Canfield had three, and Boardman rushed for 233-yards while the Cardinals gained only 33-yards on the ground.
