Junior Women’s League hosts Fall Market By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Junior Women’s League of Canfield hosted its 46th annual Fall Market on the Green Sept. 19, with 154 vendors set up for visitors to browse. The vendors offered a variety of items, including fall and winter holiday crafts, jewelry, homemade baked goods, personalized items, fruits and vegetables, and antiques and collectibles. Several service organizations were also on hand to inform visitors of their purpose and services. The Fall Market is a group ef-

fort among the members of the Junior Women’s League of Canfield and is the organizations largest annual fundraiser. Proceeds from the Fall Market fund three $1,000 scholarships given to high school seniors each spring. Proceeds are also donated to various local community charities, such as the Beatitude House, Operation Blessing and the renovation of the War Vets Museum. The organization also provides Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance to three local families. The Fall Market boasts many local vendors, but also offers vendors who come from all over

the state. A majority of the vendors are also repeaters. “We got a really great response from vendors this year. We have increased the number of vendors and we are always open to new vendors. We also take food concessionaires each year. All vendors are welcome,” said Peggy Rowe, Fall Market co-chair. Rowe co-chaired the event with Diane Smythe. Members of the Junior Women’s League of Canfield were on hand all day to help, including selling 50/50 raffles. Canfield High School and Campbell Memorial High School students also volunteered helping ven-

dors load and unload their cars and they offered to watch the vendors’ tables if they needed a break. The Boy Scouts volunteered to help clean up after the event. The Junior Women’s League of Canfield provided pastries and coffee for the vendors, which was donated by Panera Bread and Marlowe’s Coffee, respectively. Giant Eagle also donated a gift card to the group. Any vendors interested in next year’s Fall Market, set for Sept. 16, may call 330-502-5938 for pre-registration information. This month, 673 students from 49 states will showcase their talents in Nashville. Joining those students is Ryan DiThomas, a senior at Canfield High School. He plays the oboe, the English horn and the clarinet. On Oct. 28, during the 2015 NAfME national In-Service Conference, these young musicians will gather in Nashville to showcase their expert musicianship and perform at a gala concert. The performance will take place on the world-famous Grand Ole Opry House stage. The All-National Honor Ensembles consist of a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed choir, and jazz ensemble. Students were chosen through an audition process. The concert band and symphony orchestra will each have approximately 150 instrumentalists, and the mixed chorus wil have approximately 350 vocalists. Eligible students have qualified for their state=level honor ensemble program and competed against top students for a spot in these national honor ensembles. This is the second time a Canfield High School student was selected. Emily Damelio, oboe, was selected in 2013.

‘Boo Bubbles’ at CVMS science class

All Your Halloween Needs!

Dry ice is the perfect ingredient for a science experiment at Canfield Village Middle School. The eighth-grade science class is learning about sublimation, a phase change where a solid changes directly to a gas, skipping the liquid phase. The class did an experiment to see this change by capturing dry ice in a bottle. The bottle has a hose hooked to it, through which the carbon dioxide escapes. By dipping the end of the hose into a soap solution, “Boo Bubbles” form. When the bubles burst, the carbon dioxide is released into smoke.

Area seniors flock to Boardman Park for fun day By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com

Seniors from various communities flocked to Boardman Township Park on Sept. 17 to have fun at Senior Fun Day, a bi-monthly program sponsored by senior outreach programs within the community. Mike Huzicko, a Senior Fun Day regular, came with his wife, Karen. “It’s great, we love people and we get to get out of the house,” Huzicko said. Theresa Pesa said she also liked seeing people and generally enjoying herself – the food was an added bonus. Josephine Sylvester favored a different part of Senior Fun Day, the exercise. Mona Mangiarelli, director of Senior Independence Senior Center, spent time during Senior Fun Day to provide seniorfriendly exercises along with

many other fun activities to all that wished to partake. “We get together to provide socialization, recreation, exercise and education material for seniors,” Mangiarelli said. “We do this every month, it ’s pa r t of a com mu n it y outreach through senior independence.” Regardless of the reason for the all of the love surrounding Senior Fun Day, the consensus is that seniors from the community enjoy such an event. “I get to meet seniors from all outreaches, from all walks of life [and] from all different backgrounds and it’s just so nice,” Mangiarelli said. Anne Copper, a former New Jersey resident, shared her love of the community here. “I wouldn’t have missed it for a million dollars,” Copper said. “Every time I come I meet new friends. ...I really love the people here in Boardman.”
