Get Started Today and Melt The Fat Away! Is It Safe To Lose 20 lbs In 40 Days?
What Is NutriMost’s NRF Technology?
It is safe to lose 20 lbs in 40 days if your body is in fat burning. If your body is not burning fat it is losing muscle mass and/or water instead; this causes the brain to feel that it is starving and will actually slow the metabolism down even further. With the NutriMost fat loss system, your body will go into a state called autophagy where it is burning fat from within. When you are in this state, the body can burn a minimum of 2,000 calories per day and up to as much as 7,000! Other programs do not put your body in this state, that is why people gain their weight back. Getting into this state of autophagy and fat burning enables you to lose at least 20 lbs in 40 days safely!
Once I Lose Weight, How Do I Keep It Off? With the NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss Sytem it is easy to keep your weight off primarily for two reasons: 1) Your body will physiologically change and you will lose your craving for the fat storing foods that caused you to gain your weight in the first place and 2) With the NutriMost program, you will learn which foods put your body in fat storage, thereby eliminating them in the future. Other programs do not change your body’s physiology, for example they do not address the underlying reason for your weight gain!! This is why people easily re-gain the weight they lost while on other programs. With the NutriMost program, 97% of our patients keep their weight off for at least one year!!

Beacause of this powerful technology, we are able to look at such factors as a person’s weight, percentage of body fat, their hydration level, body fat mass, visceral fat, as well as calculate each person’s relative metabolic age. These are just some of the factors that are reviewed in our office every 10 days while a patient is on the NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss System. Salem Regional Medical Center offers advanced cancer care locally
C
ancer is the second most common cause of death in the U.S., and almost half of all men and one-third of all women will develop this disease at some point during their lifetimes. Anyone who has ever faced a diagnosis of cancer or supported a loved one battling cancer, understands the toll that this disease may take. Need for Expansion To meet this growing community need, Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC) launched its cancer care expansion project last fall as part of the hospital’s strategic plan to address the region’s increased demand for more convenient access to advanced diagnostics and cancer treatment. On October 12, SRMC’s Cancer & Infusion Center opened to provide area residents with state-of-the-art cancer care in a healing and compassionate environment. “Caring for the people in our region is our passion and our privilege,” said Anita Hackstedde, M.D., SRMC President and CEO. “During the past year, hundreds of cancer patients have entrusted Salem Regional Medical Center with their care. This project was designed with the unique needs of our patients in mind, and will allow us to better sup-
port them in their journey from diagnosis through treatment. Our patients will benefit not only from the latest in medical technologies that we provide at SRMC, but also from the hands-on support and knowledge shared by our team of trusted healthcare professionals.” In the past 12 months, SRMC’s oncology team has provided personalized care to those fighting the battle against cancer, with over 2,000 visits made to the oncology unit for treatment. The hospital’s former 3,500 square foot oncology unit opened in 1999, with 4 private treatment bays, a semi-private treatment area and two group treatment rooms; which were originally designed to care for a smaller number of patients. At 11,900 square feet, the Cancer & Infusion Center is three times the size of the previous unit’s space. Cancer & Infusion Center Features Located on SRMC’s second floor near the East State Street crosswalk, the Cancer & Infusion Center provides a personalized outpatient setting for individuals to receive regular intravenous (IV) medication therapy for cancer treatment, along with a variety of other chronic health conditions not related to cancer. This type of infusion therapy is used when oral medications are not an

option. Features of the new unit include: • A Community Treatment Center, furnished with 6 reclining chairs for patients who wish to receive therapy in a more social, group treatment setting. This area also includes a nurses’ station, four televisions and a fireplace. • 15 private treatment bays, furnished with reclining chairs and televisions • 4 private treatment rooms, each with an individual bed and television • 6 exam rooms • A laboratory room, with convenient access to laboratory services • A Patient and Family Education Center and 12-person conference room to provide patients with one-on-one education and allow multi-disciplinary teams of physicians and staff to meet and discuss patients’ treatment plans; along with dedicated space for patients and family members to access educational resources • A Patient Boutique, featuring wigs, scarves and hats; with private consultations for those facing hair loss “There is a real need in our region for comprehensive and easily accessible cancer care services,” Dr. Hackstedde added. “With the addition of these expanded treatment areas and new private treatment room accommodations, our patients can find comfort in being close to their family and friends, while coping with a difficult diagnosis.”
“Those battling cancer will no longer have to travel outside of our area to receive a full range of cancer care treatment options, provided by a highlyskilled, experienced and compassionate staff. Our investment in this new facility demonstrates SRMC’s ongoing commitment to address our patients’ needs, from early detection that is enhanced by our advanced diagnostic medical imaging, to leading edge treatment.” SRMC is Regional Destination for Advanced Care As Columbiana County’s largest employer with over 1,000 staff members, Salem Regional Medical Center has become a regional destination for patients to receive advanced, high-quality care; that is complemented by innovation and state-of-the-art technology. SRMC was the first hospital in the area to offer the latest advances in diagnostic technology to aid in the early detection of cancer, including the first 3T Open MRI between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, and the Mahoning Valley’s only 3-D Virtual Colonoscopy. The hospital has also been designated as a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology, becoming the only certified Lung Cancer Screening Center in the Mahoning Valley and one of only two accredited centers in the Northeastern Ohio region. healthy mouth is good for more than just a pretty smile. Oral health can affect the entire body, making dental care more than just a cosmetic concern. Many people know that poor oral hygiene can lead to gum disease, tooth decay and even lost teeth. But are you aware that failing to brush or visit the dentist regularly also can lead to more serious health issues? According to Colgate, recent research suggests that there may be an association between oral infections, particularly gum disease, and cardiovascular disease and preterm birth. Gum disease also may make diabetes more difficult to control, since infections may cause insulin resistance and disrupt blood sugar. Your mouth also can serve as an infection source elsewhere in the body. Bacteria from your mouth can enter the bloodstream through infection sites in the gums. If your immune system is healthy, there should not be any adverse effects. However, if your immune sys-
tem is compromised, these bacteria can flow to other areas of the body where they can cause infection. An example of this is oral bacteria sticking to the lining of diseased heart valves. Other links have been found between See ORAL HEALTH, Page E6

What makes Savon Medimart stand out from the rest
S
By Robin S. Ivany VP/GM - Savon Medimart
avon Medimart is dedicated to selling quality medical grade equipment and supplies to our customers at a discounted rate. Medical equipment prices are constantly changing because large insurance conglomerates control what medical equipment suppliers can charge and what the reimbursement rate will be on our products. Contracts with insurance companies have forced suppliers to charge much higher prices so that insurance companies remain competitive. During the past few years our industry has taken drastic cuts in reimbursement, some in excess of 49%. Many companies have closed their doors because they can’t cover the cost of the product let alone additional overhead costs. DME companies are being forced out of business at a drastic rate. As a business owner, I knew I had to change the way we do business, not only for the livelihood of our business, but for the customers involved. Customers are dealing with these ramifications on a daily basis. Many customers are un-
able to find providers to take on their needs because the population of DME companies has dwindled so drastically over the past few years. My plan was to stay in business by changing our model. We opted for a “no insurance contract model.” Savon Medimart does not accept insurance payments of any kind and opted to be a cash and carry business. We accept cash, checks and major credit cards. Our prices are much lower compared to a DME company who is mandated to charge you higher prices because of insurance contracts. Insurance companies not only cut our reimbursement but they have also made it almost impossible to get good health insurance coverage without paying an arm and a leg. More and more middle class families are unable to pay insurance premiums and have opted to go to the Marketplace to find more reasonable options. “Cheaper” is not always better when it comes to insurance. However, not being able to pay the rent and buy food for your family is not an option either, so off to the market place they trot. Affordable options, yes, but let’s talk about deduct-
“Let Savon Medimart help you lead a healthier and happier life.” ibles. The average deductible from the Marketplace can range anywhere from $3,000.00 to $10,000.00 This insurance will cover your family during a catastrophic event, but most healthy people don’t end up spending up to $10,000.00 on medical bills in a year. Hence, buying your medical equipment and supplies from Savon Medimart proves to be a better option for individuals with outlandish deductibles. Why pay more money for co-insurance fees when you can purchase discounted items for much less money out of your pocket. Know your insurance options before you hand over your insurance card to purchase your medical equipment and supplies. Don’t be afraid to ask the right questions. Know how much they will be billing for those products. Once you have the information you need, call Savon Medimart and see how much less you will be spending on the exact same products. You will end up saving money in the long run.
Also, feel free to submit your own claim to the insurance company so that it can be added to your deductible. Every penny counts when it comes to insurance deductibles. Let Savon Medimart not only save you money but educate you on the products that will benefit you and your family. Savon Medimart prides itself on taking care of our customers by first making sure they get the products and services they need, but most importantly, at the lowest most affordable rate possible. Put your insurance card back in your wallet and visit us for all your home medical needs including portable oxygen concentrators, Cpap and BiPap, nebulizers, lift chairs, hospital beds, bathroom safety aids, braces, tens units, ice packs / cold therapy, scooters, wheelchairs and bandage supplies and much more. through 2007. While oral health issues may lead to other conditions over time, symptoms also may be indicative of underlying conditions of which a person is unaware. Inflammation of gum tissue may be a warning sign of diabetes. Oral problems, such as lesions in the mouth, may indicate the presence of HIV/AIDS. Dentists may be the first people to diagnose illnesses patients don’t even know they have. An important step in maintaining good overall health is to include dental care in your list of preventative measures. Visit the dentist for biannual cleanings or as determined by the doctor. Do not ignore any abnormalities in the mouth. Maintain good oral hygiene at home by brushing twice a day and flossing at least once per day. Mouthwashes and rinses also may help keep teeth and gums healthy. Oral health and other systems of the body seem to be linked. Taking care of your teeth promotes overall health. oral health and overall health. In 2010, researchers from New York University who reviewed 20 years of data on the association concluded that there is a link between gum inflammation and Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers in the UK also found a correlation. Analysis showed that a bacterium called “Porphyromonas gingivalis” was present in brains of those with Alzheimer’s disease but not in the samples from the brains of people who did not have Alzheimer’s. The P. gingivalis bacterium is usually associated with chronic gum disease and not dementia. Researchers also have found a possible link between gum disease and pancreatic cancer. Harvard researchers found that men with a history of gum disease had a 64 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared with men who had never had gum disease, based on studies of men from 1986

How to find time for exercise
D
iet and exercise are essential components of a healthy lifestyle. While even the busiest men and women can find ways to eat healthy, finding time to exercise can be more difficult. According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, regular physical activity can prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and stroke, which are the three leading causes of health-related death in the United States. In addition, men and women who are not physically active are at greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Regular exercise helps people control their weight while promoting bone, muscle and joint health. While the benefits of regular exercise are substantial, finding the time for daily exercise is not always so easy. The following are a handful of strategies men and women can employ as they attempt to make more time in their days to exercise. Reexamine your free time. Few adults, and especially those juggling families
and careers, have an abundance of free time. But reexamining the ways you are spending your free time may help you uncover some moments for daily exercise. The Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition notes that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 need at least two and a half hours each week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. While that may seem like a lot, it’s only slightly more than 20 minutes per day. It helps to supplement such aerobic activity with some strength-training activities at least two days per week. Try waking up 20 to 30 minutes earlier each day, using that time to hit the treadmill or jog around the neighborhood. You likely won’t be affected by waking up earlier, and you won’t need to alter your existing schedule for the rest of the day, either. If mornings aren’t your thing, make better use of your lunch hour, going for a jog or visiting your company’s exercise facilities if that option is available to you. See EXERCISE, Page E9

EXERCISE Continued from Page E8
Work while you exercise. Technology has made it easier than ever before to stay connected to the office even when you are nowhere near your desk. Men and women who can’t seem to find time to exercise often cite the demands of their job as the primary reason behind their inactivity, but those same individuals can use the technology at their disposal, be it smartphones that allow them keep track of work emails or tablets that make it possible to connect remotely to office servers, to work while they exercise. Bring your smartphone or tablet with you when you work out on the elliptical or jog on the treadmill. Reduce your sedentary time. A 2008 study from Australian researchers found that people who regularly break up their sedentary time, including the hours they sit behind their desk at the office, with movement had healthier waist circumferences, body mass indexes and triglycerides than those who
E9
did not. While hourly breaks to walk around the office might not seem like exercise, such breaks can benefit your long-term health. Get creative. Many people associate daily exercise with private gyms, and while gyms can serve as excellent motivators and great places to get full-body workouts, time involved in driving to and from the gym can make it difficult to commit to gym memberships. But you don’t need a gym membership to live a healthy lifestyle. When possible, take the stairs instead of an elevator and park further away from your office door so you get a small cardiovascular workout on your way into and out of the office. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, walk or bike around your neighborhood. Such simple gestures may seem insignificant, but the more creative ways you find to exercise each day, the more beneficial such efforts become. While there is no way to create more time in the day, men and women can employ several strategies to make more time for daily exercise. MetroCreative Services

Recognize the warning signs of stress
S
tress is a part of life for many men and women. But as prevalent as stress is, many people are unaware of the potentially negative side effects that can result when stress goes untreated. According to the American Psychological Association, chronic stress forces the muscles in the body to be taut and tense for long periods of time, a guardedness that can make men and women susceptible to stress-related disorders such as migraine headaches. In addition, the APA notes that stress can cause people to hyperventilate, which can trigger panic attacks in those prone to such events. Long-term stress has also been linked to a host of cardiovascular ailments, including hypertension, heart attack and stroke. Stress can be triggered by a host of things, and what’s stressful for some may not be for others. But while people may react differently to certain situations, there are some common warning signs of stress that men and women should learn so they can more quickly address any problems with the stress they might encounter. Physical symptoms Stress manifests itself in various ways, including physically. Physical symptoms of stress may affect the musculoskeletal system, causing muscles to tense up and remain that way until a stressful situation has come and gone. Aches and pains can result as well, and some people coping with stress may experience nausea and dizziness. Stress also can affect the cardiovascular system. When that occurs, uncomfortable and potentially dangerous
symptoms such as rapid heartbeat and chest pain may result. Emotional symptoms Stress also can affect mood. According to the Cleveland Clinic, signs of emotional stress include apathy, feeling on edge, a change in eating habits, and changes in sleeping patterns, which may involve sleeping more than usual or difficulty getting to sleep. Cognitive symptoms Some people coping with stress may have to deal with certain cognitive symptoms. Such men and women may find themselves in constant states of worry, and their thoughts may race to an extent that makes it difficult to accomplish certain tasks. Additional cognitive symptoms include poor judgment, inability to focus and feelings of forgetfulness and disorganization. Behavioral symptoms Stress also can affect behavior, and men and women suffering from stress may act nervously. Nail biting, fidgeting and pacing are among the behavioral symptoms of stress, which may be more noticeable to loved ones or colleagues than the individual exhibiting the symptoms. Some people also may procrastinate and avoid their responsibilities when dealing with stress. Increased use of alcohol and drugs or suddenly smoking more cigarettes also are behavioral symptoms of stress. Men and women concerned about stress should consult their physicians and keep an eye out for any potential warning signs that stress levels are reaching unhealthy heights. MetroCreative Services

T
housands of women will become pregnant this year for the first time. Pregnancy can trigger thoughts of the future and making plans for when the baby arrives. It also can be a time to take inventory of personal health to make changes that will benefit expecting mothers and the children growing within them. Prioritizing overall health is a great way to increase your chances of a safe and healthy pregnancy. Visit an obstetrician or midwife as soon as possible. Once the pregnancy test comes out positive, make an appointment with your doctor to discuss the course of the pregnancy and what can be done from the start. Doctors may schedule blood screenings and estimate due dates. They also will go over nutrition and care guidelines, which will usually include a regimen of prenatal vitamins. Discuss age and risk factors with the doctor. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention point out that there has been a societal shift in the age at which most women become pregnant, with many waiting until later in life to start their families. Whereas ages 20-24
used to be the peak time for pregnancy, many women in North America now become pregnant for the first time between the ages 25 and 29, while many more wait until their 30s. Waiting longer to become pregnant for the first time may increase a woman’s risk for certain conditions during pregnancy. Your doctor can answer any questions you may have and let you know about additional testing that may be necessary. Don’t overeat. Eating right is one of the best things you can do for yourself and the baby. Anything you put in your body can affect the baby, so prioritize a healthy diet. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to eat for two. During the first few months, you may not have much of an appetite. The fetus does not require many additional nutrients until the end of the pregnancy. Only then will an increase of 200 calories or so be adequate. Speak with your physician about what constitutes healthy and unhealthy weight gain during pregnancy. Choose healthy foods. Avoid undercooked foods and soft cheeses that may harbor bacteria. Some seafood, such as tuna or shark, may contain high levels of mercury. Lean meats, fruits, vegeta-
bles, fiber, and dairy products can fuel your body and keep the baby growing. Continue to exercise. Unless there are complications during your pregnancy, you likely can continue to exercise. However, don’t overdo it with exercise, and call your doctor if you experience any adverse side effects during or after exercise sessions. Avoid drugs, tobacco and alcohol. Smoking, taking drugs or drinking during pregnancy can cause serious health problems for the baby. Miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight, and
SIDS are just a few of the potential side effects of drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco or taking drugs while pregnant, advises Baby Center. Avoid these behaviors and always check with a doctor before taking any over-the-counter or herbal remedies as well. Get educated. Pick up a book from a reputable doctor or author so that you can better understand your pregnancy. It can save you stressful moments and keep your pregnancy on a healthy track. MetroCreative Services

ot many of us want to think about our future needs for aging services and long-term care until it becomes a necessity. Mom or Dad, sometimes living in another city, falls or develops a medical condition that limits his or her ability to perform normal life activities such as meal preparation or driving to and from the doctor. Suddenly, a loved one is in need and the family is not sure what steps to take. Unfortunately, waiting for something to happen instead of planning for future care needs can lead to a rushed decision that may not fit the individual’s situation and could be more costly. Planning for the typical needs of the elderly, or even unexpected illness or injury, can eliminate hasty decision making on a wide variety of aging service options. In addition, advanced planning increases an individual’s choices and gives him/her a voice in the type of assistance he/she receives. The other advantage of planning for future care needs now is preparing for the cost of long-term care services. Today in the United States, 6,000 people turn 65 every day, and one in five Americans will be older than age 65 by the year 2030 (American Association of Retired Persons, 2003). This increase will likely translate into staggering increases in costs in the very near future. We understand that talking to your parent or loved ones about their care can be a difficult conversation. Most seniors are already worried about losing their independence and do not want to be a burden to their families. Here are a couple of tips that may help you initiate the dialogue:

• Build a case. The following sections will provide you with some ways to assess your loved one’s current situation. Armed with this information, you should be able to determine whether there is a need for care. • Be gentle but firm; try not to be insulting or confrontational. If you make your parents angry or hurt, which may be hard to avoid, they are more likely to cling to the idea that they should be able to continue living independently. • Rely on experts. Realize that it may be difficult for your parents to agree with you. Suggest that you and they visit their doctor together for an objective assessment. • Most importantly, offer solutions. Giving up any part of their independence will be a difficult process for your loved ones. Understand that they will need your support and look for care solutions that provide the best possible situation for their current level of need. Giving hemodialysis patients opportunity to treat at home
A
t the Renal Group Ohio, we provide a variety of dialysis treatment options to patients with kidney failure and end-stage renal disease to find the therapy that will work best for them. We are constantly looking for new technology to give our patients the best quality of life and care we can offer them. One of the treatment options we prescribe is hemodialysis. Hemodialysis treatments are usually performed at a clinic, typically called in-center treatments, 3 times a week for 3 to 4 hours. However, in addition to scheduling conflicts there are some health concerns for patients on traditional in-center dialysis including: stress on the heart, fluid and diet restrictions, and low energy. Home hemodialysis is a different way of doing hemodialysis. Instead of visiting a dialysis center home hemodialysis offers the convenience of treatments in the comfort of your home. These home hemodialysis treatments are typically shorter between 2 liz to 3 hours and can range from every other day to 6 times a week. By performing treatments more often many patients experience fewer side effects. In 2008 after researching information about the NxStage® System One™ and the benefits of home hemodialysis, we made the decision to initiate a home hemodialysis program. We started our home hemodialysis program with one patient and over the last 7 years have grown to 32 home hemodialysis patients, the largest home hemodialysis program in Ohio.
It has been incredible to see our patients play an active role in their health care and teach them about all the options available to them. Many patients don’t know that home hemodialysis is an option for them but with proper training patients can be successful on a home program. In addition, we have observed some fantastic outcomes in our patients. One particular patient was not doing well on in-center therapy, and was so weak he was having trouble walking but, after switching him to more frequent home hemodialysis he is walking again and back to his normal daily routine. “Home dialysis has been very good for me. I was in bad shape. I was in severe pain. The pain that I had has subsided and {is} almost completely gone. Now I have the convenience ofbeing at home. I don’t have to go out 5 days a week. I can set my own times. I feel so much better now.” Alfred Sykes The striking improvements in our patient’s quality of life have been incredible. With our home hemodialysis program we are giving patients the opportunity to take control of their life and not just survive, but thrive. Our hope for the future is that we are able to continue to educate patients about all of their therapy options including home hemodialysis with the NxStage System One. Sq many patients believe incenter treatments are the only solution and we want to educate them that there is a way that could drastically improve their quality of life. We want to continue to invite our patients and even their fam-
Seasonal allergy triggers
A
llergic reactions occur when the body’s immune system attacks an often harmless substance like animal dander, food or pollen. Medication can help reduce the severity of such reactions, but some allergy sufferers find allergic reactions inconvenient nuisances even with medication. Understanding what triggers allergic reactions may help some people avoid them or make them easier to handle. The following are some of the more common allergy triggers and how men and women suffering from allergies can avoid them. Pollen Pollen is perhaps the best-known allergy trigger. A fine, often yellow substance that’s essential to the fertilization of flowers, pollen can be spread by wind,
ily members to also be part oftheir health care team and help us select the therapy and treatment that is going to work best for them. We continue to look for new technology advancements and strive to provide our community with the best renal care possible. This article written in partnership with NxStage Medical, Inc. For more information on Renal Group Ohio or their home hemodialysis program visit, www.renalgroupohio.com or call 330-729-0059. Despite the health benefits that more frequent home hemodialysis may provide to those with chronic kidney disease, this form of therapy is not for everyone. Home hemodialysis with the NxStage System One requires a patient and partner who are committed to being trained on and following the guidelines for proper system operation. The reported benefits of home hemodialysis may not be experienced by all patients. The NxStage System One is a pre~cription device and, like all medical devices, involves some risks. The risks associated with hemodialysis treatments in any environment include, but are not limited to, high blood pressure, fluid overload, low blood pressure, heartrelated issues, and vascular access complications. The medical devices used in hemodialysis therapies may add addi-
tional risks including air entering the bloodstream, and blood loss due to clotting or accidental disconnection of the blood tubing set. Patients should consult with their doctor to understand the risks and responsibilities of home and/ or more frequent hemodialysis using the NxStage System One. Certain risks are unique to the home. Treatments at home are done without the presence of medical personnel and on-site technical support. Patients and their partners must be trained on what to do and how to get medical or technical help if needed. Certain risks associated with hemodialysis treatment are increased when performing nocturnal therapy due to the length of treatment time and because therapy is performed while the patient and care partner are sleeping. These risks include, but are not limited to, blood access disconnects and blood loss during sleep, blood clotting due to slower blood flow or increased treatment time or both, and delayed response to alarms when waking from sleep. Patients should consult with their physician to understand the risks and responsibilities associated with home nocturnal hemodialysis using the NxStage System One. Submitted by the Renal Group Ohio

insects or other animals. Hay fever sufferers may sneeze or experience a runny nose and itchy eyes when pollen spreads. Over-the-counter medications, such as Claritin®, can be especially effective at relieving symptoms of seasonal allergies. But allergy sufferers also can combat high pollen counts by staying indoors on windy days and closing their windows and running their air conditioners. Pet dander Dander are flakes of skin in an animal’s fur or hair. Because of their microscopic size, these flakes of skin can easily attach and remain attached to bedding, fabrics and furniture. op allergies to dander. Should such a situation arise, do not allow your pet into your bedroom, bathe the animal regularly and remove carpeting in favor of bare floors or washable rugs. Mold Mold is a furry growth of minute fungal hyphae that is often found in damp parts of a home, such as basements and bathrooms. Mold also can be found in grass and mulch, triggering allergic reactions when men and women spend time in their yards. To avoid an allergic reaction triggered by mold, make sure moist areas of your home get fresh air regularly and routinely clean ceilings or other areas where mold may grow. Dust mites Tiny bugs that live in bedding, carpets, curtains, upholstery, and mattresses, dust mites feed on dead skin cells from people and pets. Dust mites also may feed on bacteria, fungi and pollen. Dust mites thrive in humid conditions, but these pests can be combatted with hypoallergenic pillows and mattress covers. Removing materials that collect dust, such as carpet, also can reduce the number of dust mites.

“You have dense breasts.” What next? By Nancy L. Gantt, MD FACS
M
ammography has proven to be the screening method of choice for breast cancer. The American Cancer Society and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network GANTT (NCCN) recommend that women begin annual screening mammography at age 40. Breast ultrasound and breast MRI have been proven to be helpful additional studies. Additional mammogram imaging, ultrasound and/ or MRI are ordered based on either history or imaging findings. Physicians are responsible for assessing a patient’s risk of developing breast cancer and evaluating the physical appearance of the breast by a clinical exam. The density of breast tissue varies with a woman’s age and hormonal status. On mammography, dense breasts are more difficult to evaluate than those that have more fatty tissue. The “Breast Density Law” was implemented to inform women who have dense breasts to discuss these findings with their doctor. In December 2014, the Ohio House passed Senate Bill 54, which requires imaging facilities to inform patients and their health care providers of the patient’s dense breast tissue. Patients with dense breasts will receive a letter that states the following: “Your mammogram demonstrates that you have dense breast tissue, which could hide abnormalities. Dense breast tissue, in and of itself, is a relatively common condition. Therefore, this information is not provided to cause undue concern; rather, it is to raise your awareness and promote discussion with your health care provider regarding the presence of dense breast tissue in addition to other risk factors.” What is the next step if you are told you have dense breasts? The most important next step is a discussion with your doctor. This discussion should include your personal and family health history, risk for developing cancer and additional imaging options. Pertinent History A thorough evaluation of your medical history, medications, family history, and lifestyle are important. Personal risk factors for developing breast cancer include not having children, hormone use, obesity, alcohol consumption and radiation/chemical exposures. A patient with a significant family history of
breast and ovarian cancer coupled with dense breasts may require additional imaging studies. Available Imaging Options for Dense Breasts Digital Mammography: Digital mammography has been proven to be more accurate in younger women with dense breasts and has been shown to have a higher cancer detection rate than film mammography in women ages 45 to 69. Tomosynthesis is a process in which the breast tissue is visualized in a three dimensional fashion. This technology was first reported in the late 1990’s, however utilization has recently increased in imaging women with dense breasts. Tomosynthesis combined with digital mammography has demonstrated a statistically significant increase in breast cancer detection and has reduced the call back rate for additional imaging, The greatest reduction was seen in women younger than 50. Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI): MBI is a non-invasive nuclear medicine test that can identify cancer in dense breast tissue. During this test, the patient receives a small amount of a radioactive substance through a peripheral intra venous (IV). Then, a special camera takes detailed pictures while the breast is in gentle compression. The radioactive substance injected will “light up” in abnormal areas in the breast. Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Breast MRI has gained popularity over the last decade in evaluating breast diseases It is recommended for screening purposes in “high-risk” women according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.3 Breast MRI may also be useful in evaluating a women with dense breasts once an abnormality has been detected on mammogram. Generally, if an abnormal area is identified on MRI or MBI the patient is scheduled for a “second-look” breast ultrasound and possible biopsy. Approximately 50% of women have very dense breasts. It is especially important for these women to have a conversation with their doctors. 1. Education: Understand that dense breasts make it harder to see some tumors and may increase your risk for developing breast cancer. 2. History: Review a detailed personal and family history. 3. Plan: Follow the Radiologist’s recommendation for any additional screening imaging. Discuss lifestyle modifications with your doctor that may decrease your risk of developing breast cancer. These may include weight loss,
avoidance of excess alcohol consumption, regular exercise and avoidance of supplemental hormone use. 4. Options: Know what is available in your area. If you have a greater than 20% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer you are considered “high risk.” Screening in accordance with NCCN guidelines is required with twice-yearly clinical breast examination, digital mammogra-
phy and breast MRI. 5. Genetic Counseling: Consider a consultation with a certified genetic counselor in your area if you have a family history of cancer, especially breast or ovarian cancer in a first-degree relative or breast cancer in a male relative. Nancy L. Gantt, MD FACS, is co-director of the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
