Local church sponsors shoe drive Canfield Presbyterian Church is sponsoring a Soles4Souls drive to collect new and gently used shoes through Nov. 2. Soles4Souls is a nonprofit organization that provides footwear to those in need in times of disaster, distributes shoes to children and adults in developing countries, and helps entrepreneurs start small businesses repairing and selling used shoes as a way to support their families. A collection bin is located in the lobby of the main entrance of the church - new or gently used shoes and boots are accepted, but no flip-flops or slippers. The church address is 140 W. Main Street in Canfield and is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. (Wednesdays until 8 p.m.) and Sundays from 9-11:30 a.m.

Local Trick-or-Treat Trick-or-Treat in Canfield will take place on Oct. 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

A Night at the Oasis - a 1920’s murder mystery dinner Join in with “A Night at the Oasis,” an original script 1920’s murder mystery dinner to benefit Camp Stambaugh, located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield. Local studio hosts auditions for “The Great Russian Nutcracker” Ruth’s Dance and Fitness Co. LLC, located at 721 Boardman-Poland Road, Suite 100A, was chosen as the host studio for “The Great Russian Nutcracker” with The Moscow Ballet, and auditions will take place on Oct. 20 at Ruth’s Dance & Fitness Co. LLC. The audition is open to ballet dancers in the community who are ages 6-18 who may be interested in performing in the ballet. Check in time and registration will start promptly at 10:30 a.m. and auditions will start at 11:30 a.m. starting with the youngest children first. Students will need to stay for a few hours because they may be double cast in two roles.

If chosen, students will need to be available on Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. to rehearse with the Russian dancers.

Rehearsals may go into late afternoon on Oct. 21, but students may leave when they are finished learning the choreography of the pieces they have been cast in. Also, if chosen to be in “The Great Russian Nutcracker,” students will need to pay a casting fee of $50. The final performance will take place at DeYor Performing Arts Center on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. The dress rehearsal and the performance will take place on the same day.

Firefighters visit Hilltop during Fire Safety Week

To celebrate Fire Safety Week, students at Hilltop Elementary School received a special visit from members of the Cardinal Joint Fire District on Oct. 10.

The firemen educated the students about fire safety and presented fire safety tips to students by performing a Fire Safety Quiz Show for each grade level.

A group of four students were chosen from each class and

Deputy Chief Matt Rarick asked the four teams questions ‘game show style’ and the students had to buzz in first to answer the questions.

Rarick asked the students such questions as, “After leaving your house because of a fire, where do you go?” and “When you hear the smoke detector beep, what should you do?”

After five rounds of questions, with each round getting a little harder, a winning class was declared, which received a special

prize of a red squishy Fire Safety Week ball. All other students received helmets, stickers and coloring books compliments of the fire department.

After the Fire Safety Quiz Show, the firefighters invited the children outside to check out the inflatable Fire Safety House and fire truck parked in back of the school.

The students were able to explore the Fire Safety House and practiced crawling on the ground until they could exit the

house safely.

Firefighter/EMT Jonathan Hutchison explained the fire truck’s equipment to the students and showed them the tools firefighters use when fighting fires. Firefighter/paramedic John Corman gave the students a chance to sit in the cab of the fire truck.

The Cardinal Joint Fire District visited C.H. Campbell Elementary School to present their Fire Safety Week program on Oct. 11.

Cats in need at Angels for Animals

Angels for Animals is looking for community members to help the vast number of strays by adopting and fostering cats.

“Most of the days we have at least 20-30 cats come in. In the low days we always congratulate each other when we only get like 10 cats in,” said Cassidy Piskorick, the kennel manager at Angels for Animals.

The facility currently houses 130 cats ready for adoption with another 75-100 waiting in medical holding.

Piskorick said that its not unusual for the facility to take in about 400 cats in a month, and only have around 100 adopted.

“These past couple months have been ver y, ver y bad,” Piskorick said.

To battle these numbers, Angels for Animals is always looking for community members to serve as foster parents for these cats.

She said that anyone interested in fostering these animals is able to fill out an application online and submit it to the organization.

Angels for Animals handles all of the cats medical needs, including paying for fixing the animals and flea and tick medication, as well as anything else they may require.

“We do our best to get them all out to foster homes, which is why we are always so desperate for fosters,” Piskorick said.

She explained that Angels for Animals is one of the only shelters in the area that actively takes in stray cats, due largely to the fact that many shelters that are no kill have month long waiting lists.

“We always need fosters, and even if you can’t foster if you are looking to adopt, we need you too,” Piskorick said.

Piskorick said that the best way to go about the adoption process is to come into the shelter.

“We do same day adoptions, so usually if you come in to the shelter we can get your application processed that day,” Piskorick said.

For the last two months Angels for Animals hosted a buy one, get one free special on cat adoption, hoping to battle the high numbers of cats being brought in.

“It’s been kitten season,” Piskorick said. “They say its May to October, so it’s been a lot.”

Friendly Squares dance in November The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Jump Start lessons benefit fifth-grade students

During the week of Sept. 2428, Canfield Village Middle School Band Director Jim Volenik hosted Jump Start lessons for beginning fifth-grade band students. Volenik then invited parents to sit in with their child’s instrument group to see what they have learned during

their first week of playing an instrument on Sept. 28.

Volenik divided the 72 members into their instrument groups, including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone and baritone.

Each group was taught by a professional musician or a retired band director, including Al Colella, retired band director at Poland Seminary High

School, who instructed the clarinet group, Tom Brucoli, retired band director of Champion High School, who instructed the baritones, Bill Forrester, retired band director of Hubbard High School, who instructed the trombones and Bob Rollo, retired band director of Warren Harding High School, who instructed the trumpets.

Boardman Park has Halloween activities for the family Boardman Park is ready for Halloween with events happening through the month of October. The Pumpkin CarveOut Contest will take place on Oct. 20 from 12-9 p.m. and Oct. 21 from 12-5 p.m. Bring your family, friends, carving tools and newspapers for a fun time creating spooktacular Jack-OLanterns. Prizes will be awarded in different age categories from children to adults. There is a small fee per pumpkin. All pumpkins will be lit and on display Oct. 24-31.

“Canfield High School band director Tony Cebriak, who is retired now, and I started the Jump Start program here in Canfield 25 years ago. It really caught on in the Mahoning Valley and several of the school districts participate in the pro-

gram now. All the instructors I have here this week will travel to the different school districts throughout the months of September and October to participate in those schools’ Jump Start lessons,” Volenik said.

The band students participate in the lessons each day during Jump Start week with their instructors. At the end of the week, they get to show off their newly-

learned skills for their parents.

“We hold Jump Start lessons every year, and this is the second year I have invited the parents to come in and see what their child has learned during their first week with an instrument. We’ve had a pretty good turn out and I think they appreciate being able to actually see, and hear, their child’s progress,” Volenik said.

Wrestling sign-ups open for upcoming season Wrestling sign-ups for the upcoming season can be done online at www.canfieldwrestlingclub.com or by visiting the wrestling building behind the high school any Tuesday or Thursday evening from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Preseason conditioning will be taking place. Official wrestling practice begins on Oct. 30 in the aforementioned building. Registration is $65 for the first child, $55 for the second and $45 for the third.

Canfield High School senior and varsity soccer player Jad Jadallah continued the tradition of a Pink Out to raise breast cancer awareness during the boys junior varsity and varsity soccer games against Howland on Sept.

27, and the girls junior varsity and varsity soccer games against Austintown on Oct. 1.

Jadallah organized the Pink Out as his National Honor Society service project.

Through the Pink Out, Jadallah raised money for the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center and the American Cancer Society.

The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center delivers accurate prevention, early detection, diagnosis and support services available in an environment of compassionate and coordinated care.

Jadallah sold Pink Out game tickets at a discount during lunch the week before the games, with proceeds going to the two charities.

The Canfield Soccer Boosters donated pink socks for all players to wear for the games. All junior varsity and varsity players were announced prior to their games and cancer dedications to loved ones were announced for all players.

Jadallah said he chose this project to keep the Pink Out tradition alive and to support two

great causes.

“I wanted to keep the Pink Out tradition alive and be able to continue to raise breast cancer awareness. I also wanted to honor my grandparents. My grandfather passed away from cancer and my grandmother is a survivor,” Jadallah said.

Jadallah also had a table set up at all the games to sell breast cancer awareness items, such as pink bandanas, pink ribbons and pink bracelets. He also offered a variety of baked goods with a breast cancer awareness theme, many of which were baked by Jadallah’s mother and other soccer parents, including

cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate covered pretzels, banana bread, zucchini bread muffins, mini apple pies and cake pops.

“I‘d like to thank all those who donated and supported this cause. I am very appreciative of all their help,” Jadallah said.

The ideal candidate would have a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering or similar education and 5 years Process Engineering experience or 10 years experience with refining or petrochemical plant operations without a degree. Supervisory experience is desirable.

Candidate is responsible for managing Operations personnel, ensuring manufactured products comply with specifications, monitoring raw materials, intermediate and finished product storage tanks, overseeing compliance initiatives, coordinating daily operations activities and monitoring plant production, efficiency, downtime and utility costs.

Must have a working knowledge of PSM, OSHA, EPA, RMP and ISO standards and have experience planning and coordinating activities for shutdowns, daily maintenance tasks and projects.

Candidate must be able to work in a fast paced environment, be a self-motivated person with strong leadership and organizational skills. Some travel may be required. Good written and oral communication skills and knowledge of Microsoft products and SAP are essential.

Victoria Koch and Jonathan Paolucci, both of Boardman, were united in marriage June 30 at St. Charles Borromeo Church during a ceremony solemnized by the Rev. Philip Rogers. A reception followed that evening at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center in Boardman.

Joseph and Patti Koch of Austintown are the parents of the bride. The groom’s parents are John and Stephanie Paolucci of Canfield.
