Author visits library to talk with Holy Family School students By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Author and YouTube star Paige McKenzie spoke at the Poland library on Oct. 11 as a part of Teen Read Week at the library. She gave a talk to students about her work on her YouTube series “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl,“ which has gone on to become a bestselling trilogy of young adult books. The students were from Jean Wargo’s seventhgrade and Caroline Mulhall’s
eighth-grade classes from Holy Family Schools. “I don’t have anything you don’t have,“ McKenzie told the students during her talk to show the students that they could be just as successful as her. She began her talk by introducing herself to the students. The students got to know her love of Disney, Pinterest and Stephanie Perkins. She explained how she started her YouTube series. A local director had an idea for the series and
she added some story to it. She, her mom and the director started a production company called Coat Tales Productions. McKenzie, now 23, was just 16 when the series started. “We wanted to prove to Hollywood that you can tell a story on a flip cam and get millions of views,“ she said of her early work. The series’ 17th season had been nearing release at the time of the visit. Now, the company uses better equipment to film. She described the show as “Gilmore
Girls meets Paranormal Activity.“ She began writing books based on the YouTube series after. Her first novel, “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl,“ released in 2015. The next two books in the series, “The Awakening of Sunshine Girl” and “The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl,“ released in 2016 and 2017. She cowrote the first two books with Alyssa B. Sheinmel and co-wrote the third with Nancy Ohlin. See AUTHOR, Page 4

Poland library displays use of 3-D printer by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Poland library offered an introduction to world of 3-D printing at the library on Sept. 5. Missy Williams, Poland librarian, explained how to the library’s 3-D printer works using a presentation and demonstration. A table in front had books for 3-D printing as well as examples of things she has printed, like a three dimensional pumpkin and bookmarks that look like owls. Her presentation had informative documents from her Google
Docs that explained the many uses for 3-D printing, such as prosthetics and quick development of automotive parts. She included websites that offer free files for printing. The presentation also had a video portion. The first video Williams played showed “Iron Man“ actor Robert Downey Jr. talking to a child about the child’s prosthetic arm made from a 3-D printer that the nonprofit organization Limbitless Solutions designed to look like an arm from Downey’s movie. The second video came from the television show “Bones“ where

they used a 3-D printer to recreate a skeleton. Though fictional, the “Bones“ clip demonstrates the type of possibilities of 3-D printing. Williams showed first-hand how to use a 3-D printer. She downloaded another owl bookmark from the internet and the 3-D printer began printing it. The piece that creates the shapes and designs first needed to reach 230 degrees Fahrenheit and then the machine pulled filament through to create the bookmark. The printer uses a board that the finished product will lay on after the printing process. Dur-
ing the printing process, the machine moves the board up, down, diagonally and side-toside along the x, y and z axes to make the product. Williams had to scrape the finished product from the board. The library currently does not offer public use of the 3-D printer, but Williams mentioned other places may allow access to a printer. She also said products made through additive manufacturing like 3-D printing can be found for sale online on sites like Etsy, so no one needs to feel that they have to have a 3-D printer for these types of goods.

Bands march into season at Show of Bands By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Canfield High School hosted its annual Show of Bands on Aug. 29 to a packed Cardinal Stadium. The night marked the 43rd year of Canf ield’s Show of Bands. The performing bands were from the schools of Canfield, Struthers, West Branch, Poland, Champion, Austintown Fitch and Boardman. The Canfield “Cardinal Pride“ marching band took the field at seven for the opening ceremony, where the band played their alma mater, “Hang on Sloopy,“ and “The Star Spangled Banner.“ They marched off the field and Struthers marched on shortly after. Poland Seminary High School Marching Band performed third. They used a “Summer of Love” theme for the night, with songs such as “Good Vibrations“ by the Beach Boys and “White Rabbit“ by Jefferson Airplane. They opened with a combination of three songs, Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin’,“ The Who’s “I Can See For Miles“ and the Turtles’s “Happy Together.“ The band marched into a peace symbol during these songs. Outside of the theme, the band performed Demi Lovato’s “Confident.“ Band director Nick
Olesko said that the band may head into a Disney oriented marching show by the middle of the football season. The PSHS Marching Band has 132 members. Olesko made the decision to perform without a field commander because the songs they played did not change drastically enough to warrant needing field commanders. The band followed West Branch Marching Band and preceded Champion High School’s marching band. Austintown Fitch marched onto the field after Champion High School’s set. The marching band continued their tradition of using a military style in their appearance, marching style and song choice. The group opened with John Williams’s “March of 1941“ before going into the stylistically different songs “Malagueña” by Ernesto Lecuona and “Freebird“ by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The percussion stepped forward between the two tunes for the song “Max,“ which featured their section prominently. They closed their performance with the U.S.’s national march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever,“ which they have used to close their shows for more than 60 years. Aust intow n Fitch’s ba nd includes 150 members. The school hosted the 46th annual

B a nd d i r e c t or We s le y O’Connor said of the other bands, “All of my colleagues do a fantastic job in their programs.“ He also stated, “Everyone leaves a band night a winner, there are no losers.” T he Boa rd ma n Spa r t a n Marching Band proceeded Austintown Fitch. They played a number of popular radio songs, starting with three Van Halen hits, “You Really Got Me,“ “Eruption“ and “Jump.“ The band stood in the formation of the band’s “VH“ logo during these songs. A student jammed the guitar solo track, “Eruption,“ on his guitar on the sideline. The songs also featured an electric bass and electronic keyboard. T he Spa r t a n ba nd t hen moved to the more recent track “Uptown Funk“ by Bruno Mars, which featured the full marching band with musical additions from guitar, bass, keys and vocals. They followed this song with Harry Belafonte’s “Jump in the Line.“ Band parents and helpers prepared a stage toward the end of the Belafonte tune. They used this stage for their big finish, a series of melodies from Woodstock. The band played along with the guitar, bass, keys and drum set on the sideline near
the stage. During these songs, members of the band came out dressed as the singers of the bands and sang the parts. The band played six songs from the festival, starting with “Going Up the Country“ by Canned Heat, then “Somebody to Love“ by Jefferson Airplane, “My Generation“ by The Who, “Piece of My Heart“ by Janis Joplin and “I Want to Take You Higher“ by Sly and the Family Stone, before finishing with Joe Cocker’s showstopping rendition of the Beatles tune, “With a Little Help From My Friends.“ Boardman’s band has 167 students, and are led by Thomas Ruggieri. They have played at the Show of Bands every year and host their own band night at Spartan Stadium. Canfield’s marching band closed the night with a series of dance hits, a theme they dubbed “Dancetopia.“ They opened with C+C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat,“ followed by Jennifer Lopez’s “On t he Floor.“ Next, t hey moved from the dance floor to the silver screen with “Adelieland“ by John Powell from the movie “Happy Feet.“ The band went back to a radio hit on the next track, “Shut Up and Dance“ by Walk the Moon. The band used a more interesting way to introduce the song rather than just announc-
ing the song over the speakers. Director Michael Kelly and the band participated in a call and response conversation wherein he told them to shut up, and they yelled “and dance!“ They finished their set with a couple of dance staples from the 1920s. First, the band performed “Hoe-Down“ from Aaron Copland’s ballet, “Rodeo.“ Members of the sideline percussion and color guard danced the hoe-down while the band played. The group finished the night with “Malagueña” by Ernesto Lecuona. Canfield marches with 160 members. Kelly has the band learning other popular dance hits for their future performances. These tunes include the classic “Twist and Shout“ by the Isley Brothers and “HandClap“ by Fitz and the Tantrums. Before Canfield went on, each band had their directors and band representatives come up in front of the crowd to receive a Show of Bands plaque and meet with the other bands’ representatives. The night commemorated the bands’ hard work learning the music and drills over the summer and a demonstration of what to expect from each band throughout the football season as each band hopes to get better and sharper.

The children at Listen and Lego listen to a story and build with Legos for the remaining time left in the hour. Librarian Vikki Peck gave them a box full of Legos and handed them special pieces.
Poland library combines literacy and creativity by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Poland library invited children and parents to the Listen and Lego event on Sept. 7 where children had story time and then played with Legos. Librarian Vicki Peck read a short children’s story to the children to begin the event. The story used different shapes to slowly construct a dinosaur’s face. The book added more to the dinosaur with every turned page until the end. Peck said she always tries to incorporate a story that involves construction of building to go along with the Legos. She treats the reading as an interactive event where the children play a role. During this book, she asked the children if they knew what
the book was making. After the story, the children went over to a table with Lego bases placed on it. Peck grabbed a box of Legos and dumped some out on the table for the children to play with. No one instructed the children to build anything; they created whatever they want, allowing their creativity to flourish. Peck helped the children with whatever they needed, such as special Legos that were not in that box or building advice. Peck and the children put the Lego creations on display in the children’s section of the library after they finished. The library hosts this event on the first Thursday of every month during the school year for children from ages four to seven. The event typically lasts one hour.
