Students receive UAWGM scholarships The following local students at Youngstown State University received the $1,000 UAW-GM People’s Store Scholarship: Jasmine Beacham, who is majoring in Social Work at YSU; Paul Gruver, who is majoring in Geography at YSU; Victoria Kalmer, who is majoring in Dental Hygiene at YSU, and Kenneth Nepple, who is majoring in Electrical Engineering Technology at YSU. The scholarship is funded by proceeds from the UAW 1112 GM People’s Store located in the GM Lordstown Complex. The scholarship program was started in 1991. Recipients are the children of employees of the GM Lordstown Complex.

Pancake and sausage breakfast Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus 3930 is sponsoring a pancake and sausage breakfast on Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the parish center, located at 4500 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown. The menu consists of pancakes, sausage and beverages. The cost for adults is $5 and $3 for children 12 and under.

Rummage sale Nov. 6 Immaculate Heart of Mary Church

is having a huge rummage sale on Nov. 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the school cafeteria, located at 4700 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown. There will be thousands of items with a minimal amount of clothing. Also, there will be a Chinese auction and bake sale.

Lumen Christi Catholic Schools provide band instruction Lumen Christi Catholic Schools recognizes the importance of the fine arts as a part of curriculum, and therefore, band instruction is now available to all middle school students system wide. Prior to this fall, band instruction was accessible at a few Lumen Christi Catholic Schools as an auxiliary course with additional fees attached. This school year, Tom Mastramico will be instructing Lumen Christi students as part of the standard curriculum covered by tuition. Mr. Mastramico is an alumnus of St. Patrick’s School on Oakhill. He graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School where he was the president of the band. He then attended Youngstown State University where he participated in the jazz, concert and marching Bands. Mastramico has been teaching band since 1977 and has been instructing students at Holy Family School since 1993. Lumen Christi Catholic Schools welcome Mastramico as their new band director. The Austintown Lions Club hosted their monthly meeting on Oct. 12 at the Austintown Community Church with King Lion John Susany presiding. Their special guest was First Vice District Governor Betty Robbins from the Newton Falls Lions Club. Robbins, in her remarks, praised the Austintown club for their many achievements and went into detail of the future redistricting that will occur next year and will involve taking on more counties and renaming the district. Grace Lutheran Church fall sale Grace Lutheran Church, located at 162 South Raccoon Road in Austintown, will host its annual fall sale on Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Household goods, clothing, toys, books miscellaneous items and baked goods will be available. Also available will be homemade beef vegetable soup, pork and sauerkraut sandwiches, sloppy joes, hot dogs, pie, pop and coffee. Beginning at 12:30 p.m., clothing will be sold for $1 a bag and all merchandise will be sold at half price. All proceeds from the sale will be used to support local charities and the church’s women’s programs.

Holiday family movie matinee Join the Austintown library at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 for a Halloween holiday movie matinee. The movie will be rated G or PG. Austintown Bounce hosted its annual Halloween event on Oct. 17 About seventy children attended, receiving a treat bag, popcorn and a drink in a Halloween souvenir cup. Children got to play several games, giving them the opportunity to win various Halloween-themed prizes. Bruce Shepas, co-owner of Austintown Bounce, said he was happy to celebrate such a family oriented holiday in his facility. “We enjoy doing the family holiday events most,” Shepas said. “These type of events were discussed as soon as we opened. Local musicians visit Las Vegas

More than 80 seniors were recognized for their dedication and achievements, including Joey Shushok, the “Valley’s Greatest Golfer.” Joey won the Vindicator’s golf tournament in his age group this August, and just weeks later he was diagnosed with cancer. Now Austintown Schools and the community are rallying to show their support for Joey. Students could purchase a “#SHUSTRONG” T-shirt in exchange for a free student ticket to the game. Students, staff and others throughout the community purchased more than 350 Tshirts. All proceeds from the T-shirt sales will go to the Shushok family.

The Commons at Greenbriar hosted a very special pinning ceremony for veterans in their resident population on Sept. 23. Hospice chaplain from Senior Independence Dan Tayman was purposed with the job of presenting certificates and pins to the veterans presiding at Greenbriar and Ivy Woods Manor.

Gina Fernback, activ ities director of the Commons at Greenbriar, said she liked being able to honor veterans not only for their sakes, but also for those thinking about Greenbriar for future residency or employment. “It’s a great message to send to younger generations and even potential volunteers,” Fernback said. director of Ivy Woods Manor, brought a few residents to the special ceremony – four of whom who were pinned. “I think this is just wonderful,” Salensky said. “I love making them have fun.” Fernback said functions like this one are so important to the residents because of the longstanding significance of their years. “The military was such a huge part of their lives,” Fernback said.

Mr., Mrs. Schisler are honored at surprise party A surprise party June 27 with family and friends honored Mr. and Mrs. Wade Schisler of Austintown for their 65th wedding anniversary. The event took place at Millstone Retreat in Columbiana. Hosting were the couple’s sons and daughters-in-law, Pete and Suzanne Schisler of Greenford, and Richard and Dinah Schisler of Woodstock, Ill. The former Vivian Knauf and Mr. Schisler exchanged marriage vows June 18, 1950, in West Austintown Methodist Church. Their other children and their spouses are Randy and Barb Schisler of Youngstown and Rita and Jim McClung of Canfield. The family also includes nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Schisler is a homemaker. Mr. Schisler worked for 45 years at the Mahoning Farm Bureau in Canfield, where he was a branch manager, and 20

years at Lane Funeral Home in Austintown. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. They were members of Wickliffe Christian Church until it closed.

The Austintown U11 girls soccer team competed in the YAYSL Fall Tournament the weekend of Oct. 10. The tournament was co-hosted by Boardman and Poland soccer. The girls played five games throughout the weekend in matchups with local teams and finished the tournament in first place. The team also finished their regular season in first place.
