The Grape Pumpkin visits C.H. Campbell By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Fourth-grade students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School got a visit from the Grape Pumpkin Sept. 30. Darby Heiland, a Kent State University graduate student interning in the Canfield Local Schools Food Service Department, led a discussion with the students about the importance of purchasing local foods and their nutritional value. Heiland explained to the students the importance of buying local foods. “When you buy local foods,

they are fresh and they do not contain chemicals which are found on other imported fruits and vegetable. And because of this, they taste better. Local foods also offer better nutrition. Right now, apples and tomatoes are in season here,” Heiland said. Heiland then outlined the cycle fruits and vegetables go through to get in the hands of local consumers. “First, the seeds are planted, then the fruits and vegetables are harvested, next they are packed up and then transported to the farmers market and sold. Heiland then focused on pumpkins and explained to the students there are several kinds of pumpkins and they offer several nutrients. “Pumpkins contain vitamin A, which helps with eyesight and night visions, vitamin C, which is an antioxidant and helps with immune function, potassium and thiamine, which gives you energy. You can also roast the seeds from the pumpkins and

they are nutritious too, containing magnesium, zinc and omega 3 fatty acids,” Heiland told the students. Heiland then moved on to concord grapes and their nutritional value. “Concord grapes a re t he grapes used to make purple grape juice. They are full of flavonoids, fiber and water for hydration,” Heiland said. To wrap up her presentation and tie it all together, Heiland and Terri Hutchison, director of Food Services, treated the students to a Grape Pumpkin, a smoothie made from locally grown pumpkins and grapes.

Charity run raises money for Autism The Autism Society of Ohio office, the regional affiliate of the Autism Society of America, received a donation from a growing charity motorcycle run. More than 60 motorcyclists raised $2,005 during the Third Annual Mike Hull Memorial Ride for Autism on Aug. 22. Melissa Ka la ma n, event chairperson and sister of the memorial namesake, and her committee presented the check to Autism Society of Ohio Mahoning Valley Office Director Aundrea Cika. “We are very grateful for the incredible support of our family and friends who rode and for all of those who volunteered, donated or sponsored this event,” said Kalaman. “We are looking forward to growing this run into a must-do event for bikers and helping families with the proceeds.” Cika said that she was happy with the charity run. “This year’s run was phenomenal, uniting so many of us in the common goal of supporting families living with an autism

diagnosis,” Cika said. “We are honored to be partners with this loving and giving family for this annual event.” Cika said that proceeds from the event will be used to expand a family mini-grant holiday program for Mahoning Valley autism families that may otherwise go without. Applications will be available in late October. The tri-county motorcycle ride was created in 2013 in honor of Mike Hull. Hull was a beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather. His granddaughter, whom he cherished, is on the Autism spectrum. He was also a musician who often donated his time and talent to organizations in need. The all-day event featured an 80-mile motorcycle ride that visited six establishments in Mahoning and Columbiana counties. It kicked off with a breakfast and bike blessing and ended with a live concert and pasta dinner. Throughout the day, Strikers offered free bowling for any children or adults with special needs. Planning is underway for the next event in August 2016.

Canfield freshman stay unbeaten The Canfield High School freshman football team used a quick strike offense and a stifling defense to defeat Perry 34-0 in a battle of unbeatens. Canfield struck first when signal caller Glenn Griswold dashed 20-yards around the left end. Perry went into their bag of tricks and attempted a hook and lateral but Colin Hritz was there to scoop up the miscue on the play. Ca n f ield st r uck qu ick ly when on the next play Griswold found a leaping PJ Hallof from 38-yards out. Vince Giordano tacked on a 2-point conversion for a 14-0 Canfield lead. Canfield’s defense came up big on Perry’s next possession

stopping the Pirates 1-yard short of paydirt. Canfield went to the air once again, this time Griswold hit Matt Zaremski on a bubble screen. Zaremski was able to get to the sideline and race 80 yards for the touchdown for 20-0 Canfield halftime lead. Canfield’s defense took over in the second half registering two scores. Hallof ended any hopes of a Perr y comeback when he snagged an attempted Perr y screen pass and sprinted 36-yards for the 6-pointer. Freshman cornerback Richie Herrera went high to intercept a wayward Perry aerial and bolted 50-yards to the end zone. Colin Hritz ran in the 2-point conversion for the final margin.
