Students send Christmas spirit overseas By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com

Poland Union Elementary School participates in a giveback program throughout the year, giving to those not quite as fortunate as they are. The most recent give-back project is collecting “loose change,” putting it together to buy and send Christmas trees to military troops overseas for the holidays. Principal Michael Masucci headed the program, thinking not only of his immediate community, but of other communities abroad. Vicky Kindinis, parent volunteer, came to Union on Oct. 9 to help students with a special project for the trees being sent. “Today they are making the ornaments for the troops to decorate their trees with,” Kin-

dinis said. “What the troops do, is send the kids thank you’s in each class.” Big Dog mentor Kel s e y Thompson said she was just happy to be able to help the students with this project. “I just like working with the kids,” Thompson said. “It just reminds me of when I was younger.” One of the favorite parts of this activity was being able to make the thumbprint hearts. “We want to send our love over to the troops,” said parent volunteer Mrs. CatCott. Kindergarten teacher Nanette Ungaro said she was glad to see the giving nature this project brought out in her students. “They’re sending a piece of themselves and they’re thinking Neighbors | Amanda Tonoli about someone else,” Ungaro Jack Downie and Big Dog Kelsey Thompson crafted Christmas ornaments at said. Poland Union Elementary School on Oct. 9.

More than 60 motorcyclists raised $2,005 during the Third Annual Mike Hull Memorial Ride for Autism on Aug. 22. Melissa Kalaman, event chairperson and sister of the memorial namesake, and her committee presented the check to Autism Society of Ohio Mahoning Valley Office Director Aundrea Cika. “We are very grateful for the incredible support of our family and friends who rode and for all of those who volunteered, donated or sponsored this event,” said Kalaman. “We are looking forward to growing this run into a must-do event for bikers and helping families with the proceeds.” Cika said that she was happy with the charity run. “This year’s run was phenomenal, uniting so many of us in the common goal of supporting families living with an autism diagnosis,” Cika said. “We are honored to be partners with this loving and giving family for this annual event.” Cika said that proceeds from the event will be used to expand a family mini-grant holiday program for Mahoning Valley autism families that may otherwise go without. Applications will be available in late October. The tri-county motorcycle ride was created in 2013 in honor of Mike Hull. Hull was a beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather. that’s ever happened in my mom’s life,” Jerry said. Ruth Ellen Roepke, Jerr y Roepke’s wife and Joan’s daughter-in-law, said she didn’t even know Joan played or coached softball until recently. Joan has the reputation of being quite modest, as those who weren’t around during the time of her

softball career don’t know much about it. “She never gets her picture taken, never talks about herself,” Ruth Ellen Roepke said. YSU softball player Cali Mikovich found this experience to not only be great for Joan, but also for herself. “This is so cool, it makes me happy that somebody like this has their dream it still lives on — and this was our dream,” Mikovich said.
