Cardinal Mooney to host annual eighthgrade day Cardinal Mooney High School will host its annual eighth-grade day on Nov. 13 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the school, located at 2545 Erie Street in Youngstown. Students currently in eighth grade from all area parochial, public and charter schools are invited to spend the day in classes ranging from computer science and math to art and theology. Gamblers Anonymous meetings If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg).

There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-anda-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Boardman says ‘no’ to drugs and ‘yes’ to community engagement

Boa rdma n Schools put a unique spin on anti drug programing w ith their annua l YES Fest on Oct. 19.

“The impact of YES Fest has been profound. The week of the celebration, there is an energy, a feeling of kindness that pervades the building,” said Boardman High School Principal Cindy Fernback.

Amy Radinovic, Boardman communication coordinator, described Yes Fest as a program designed to teach students to say no to drugs, but yes to positive community engagement.

“The Anti-Drug Event was created to challenge students to go a step further than just saying ‘no to drugs,’” Radinovic said.

The theme of the event this year is “Care, Connect, Communit y,” according to v ice principal Anne Bott.

“More and more students show that students who feel connected to their school and t heir communit y are more successful academically,” Bott said. “We believe in the power of volunteerism to change the lives of our students as well as the fabric of our school and our community.”

The event kicks off with an assembly in which a multitude

of speaks from the community discussed their chosen careers with students.

High school students are joined by seventh- and eighthgraders from Glenwood Junior High School for the event which featured speakers from United Way, Second Harvest Food Bank, Animal Charity and more.

High school students then go to the gymnasium where various organizations have tables set up with volunteer opportunities for students.

Fernback said that all students who make a monetary donation to one of the three “adopted” organizations for the year received a Yes Fest Tshirt.

This year those organizations were the Rescue Mission, Second Har vest Food Bank and Animal Charities.

“After making a monetary donation, students are asked to commit to volunteering once a mont h, a nd ta k ing some friends with them each mont h,” Fernback sa id. “If the students accept that challenge, then they sign the YES Fest banner which solidifies their commitment.”

the familiar ‘Just Say No’ messaging that students have been getting since they were in elementary school,” Fernback said. “That is to answer the next obvious question, which is, ‘After I have said no, what am I supposed to do next?’ At Boardman High School, the answer to that question is our YES Fest.”

According to Bott, Yes Fest was created six years ago out of the loss of three Spartan graduates to drug related deaths.

“The deaths were in a matter of days of each other. It is par-

tially in their honor each year that the YES Fest continues,” Bott said.

It is from this loss that Boardman has creates Yes Fest to encourage students not only to avoid drug use, but to instead spend their time giving back to the community.

“The ‘Just Say No’ messaging may be effective for young children, but as students mature, the message somehow seems incomplete. We take the ‘Just Say No’ message and move it to the next logical step,” Fernback said.

Mill Creek ABWA to have anniversary meeting The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Nov. 13 anniversary meeting at A la Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include roast beef, southern baked chicken, sand trap potatoes, California blend vegetables, cole slaw, tossed salad, tomato, pepper and onion salad, rolls, coffee or tea and cake for dessert. There were 61 Boardman families who were experiencing financial difficulties and qualified to attend the night at Target to select their new coats. Ninety-six happy children shopped for new coats, and a snack was provided by Target.

Qualified applicants were notified by mail and invited to a night at Target to select their coats. After shopping for their coats, the family was given a snack provided by Target.

Lions Members Kathy Collins, Nancy Golubic and Marcie Hughes served as personal

shoppers.

The Boardman Lions are almost self-supported from donations.

This year, the club spent $4,400 on 96 coats. In the 10 year period, 455 families have received 941 coats for a total of $42,825.

The club has already started fund raising for next year.

The MetroParks Farms had an event for preschoolers to learn about potatoes on Sept.

25.

Naturalists Brenda Markley and Lynn Zocolo ran the event, where they taught preschoolers about the differences between potatoes and what you can make from them.

“It’s a fun way for kids to learn about what we grow at the farms,” Markley said.

Children were encouraged to point out the differences between types of potatoes, and talk about the traits and taste of different potato products.

“We grew potatoes at the parks this year, which we don’t always do,” Markley said. “Its great to show kids in real life what we do here at the farm.”

They were also allowed to mash their own potatoes and taste tested various potato products including chips and mashed potatoes.

Zocolo, a horticulturist who works at Fellows Riverside Garden, discussed with children how potatoes grow.

“A lot of people don’t know that potatoes grow in different sizes and different colors,” Markley said during the event.

The event was offered, according to Markley, as a way for students who have not started school yet to socialize.

It also provides socialization for parents and grandparents of young children to meet other people with children of the same age.

On Sept. 20, Fellows Riverside Garden hosted a lecture on rock gardening.

Speaker Joseph Tychonievich gave the lecture, based on his book “Rock Gardening: Reimagining a Classic Style.”

The lecture was sponsored by the annual John S. and Doris M. Andrews Memorial lecture series.

“Rock gardening is a style of gardening that is inspired by what you might see on the top of a mountain,” Tychonievich said.

He explained that its a great form of gardening for people without a lot of space.

“It’s using rocks and small plants to recreate mountain scapes,” Tychonievich said, “Its also great for if you have a steep rocky slope it’s a way to sort of work with the conditions you have.”

D u r i ng t he le c t u re Tychonievich discussed how to rethink the rock gardening style.

He talked about different plants that work best for rock gardening, and how those plants are vastly under used in regular gardening.

“A lot of these plants are too small to be used for other gardens,” Tychonievich said. “Which is what makes rock gardening cool.”

Joseph Tychonievich spoke about rock gardening at Fellows Riverside Garden on Sept. 20 as part of the John S. and Doris M. Andrews memorial lecture series.

He said that rock gardening is a form that has been around for a long time, but each generation has had a different take on it.

Tychonievich received his degree in horticulture from Ohio State University. He said that he travels giving lectures on different gardening topics and works with the North American Rock Gardening society, editing the quarterly journal.

“I have been into gardening since I was a little kid,” Tychonievich said.

He said that if anyone were interested in learning more about rock gardening to visit the North American Rock Gardening societies web site at www.NARGS. org.

“Its a great piece for people who are interested in learning more,” Tychonievich said.

Dunham advances to regional championships The Boardman Spartan junior Mitchel Dunham advanced to the OHSAA Regional Championship for the third consecutive season after placing 11th overall in career-best time of 16:05 on Oct. 20 at the OHSAA District Championship in Warren. That time moves Dunham to 11th All-Time in Boardman High School history. The Spartans finished 10th overall as a team. Scoring for the Spartans was sophomore Frank Bero in 21st place at 16:45, sophomore Caydin Newberry in a career-best time of 17:43 for 55th, sophomore Anthony Marshall in a personal-best time of 17:44 in 56th and sophomore Beau Gorby in 68th place in a career best time of 17:58.

Glenwood hosts Greek Olympic Games The 2018 edition of the Boardman Glenwood Junior High School Greek Olympic Games took place this on Oct. 19. The competitions are part of the seventh-grade social studies teachers’ unit on ancient Greece. This year, team champion was the city-state of Sparta with nine event winners. Athens and Thebes had six events winners each, and Syracuse finished with two event winners. On Oct. 20, the Boardman Lady Spartans cross country team ran at the District Championship at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.

Boardman was led by Sophia McGee and Alayna Cuevas. McGee and Cuevas both qualified for the Regional Championships next week in Boardman. McGee qualified placing 11th overall with a time of 19:45, Cuevas placed 17th overall running the course at a 19:56 clip.

Both runners have experience running at the Regionals, McGee qualified last year and Cuevas ran as the Boardman team qualified as a team last year. The Boardman team placed eighth overall. The top five teams advanced to regionals. After McGee and Cuevas, next to cross the line was Bailey Moore 21:28, Macy Potts 21:51, Isabelle Dwyer 22:20, Hannah Davitt 22:45 and Hannah Ryan 24:09.

Alayna and Sophia’s 1-2 finish helped the Lady Spartans to a Runner-up finish to overall champions Howland Tigers. Alayna Cuevas and Sophia McGee were both first team AAC with their finish. Boardman was represented well with five of the top 25 finishers. Coming in after Cuevas (20:49) and McGee (20:51) were Bailey Moore who placed 11th overall (22:30), Macy Potts who placed 15th (22:41) and placing 25th was Hannah Davitt (23:34). Weapon: Police answered a call about someone having pointed a gun at another person before charging Joshua M. Conrad, 20, of Gaither Avenue, Youngstown, with carrying a concealed weapon, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, inducing panic and aggravated menacing. A motorist alleged Conrad had pointed a weapon at him as the accuser drove near Lynn Mar Avenue; also, a loaded handgun for which Conrad had no concealed-carry permit was found in his car, authorities alleged.

Oct. 14 Arrest: Officers responded to a complaint that an intoxicated man had pulled a fire alarm at Holiday Inn of Boardman, 7410 South Ave., where they charged James R. Nell II of North Bayshore Drive, Columbiana, with inducing panic and disorderly conduct.

Security personnel saw an inebriated Nell, 27, pull the alarm then walk away, which resulted in about 300 people being evacuated, police alleged.

Theft: A Pioneer Drive woman was among residents who reported money and other items missing from their vehicles.

Recovered property: A 2009 Honda Accord was found abandoned in Neshannock Township, Pa., after the vehicle had been reported stolen in the 2000 block of Wolosyn Circle.

Theft: A man noticed $300 missing from a drawer in his South Avenue residence.

Theft: A man and two women reportedly stole about $3,025 worth of blue jeans, Tshirts and other clothing items from Toba, a clothing store in Southern Park Mall.

Criminal mischief: A Chester Drive woman showed police a laminated handwritten note someone had placed under her vehicle’s wind-

shield wiper that was harassing in nature.

Theft: A Youngstown man saw someone had removed a $30 plastic covering on his pickup truck while he patronized a Doral Drive big-box store.

Theft by deception: A Cover Drive woman reported having paid a $13,000 deposit for an estimated $32,000 worth of work to her home that was never completed. The accuser also was informed that the company apparently had gone out of business, she told police.

Oct. 15 Theft: Jennifer L. Sharpe, 30, of Sexton Street, Struthers, was charged with intentionally failing to self-scan $56 worth of property that included energy drinks while in Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Theft: Two Risher Road residents discovered vehicle titles were missing from their car, which had been ransacked.

Theft: A woman was reportedly seen on a surveillance camera grabbing about $40 from a checkout counter at Hair Depot, 4026 Market St. Unauthorized use of a vehicle: A Wolosyn Circle man said his former girlfriend took and failed to return his 2008 Saturn Vue. Theft: Two women reportedly took $350 worth of candles and body spray from Bath & Body Works in Southern Park Mall.

Theft: Officers on South Avenue pulled over then charged Michael S. Witherow, 32, with theft after alleging Witherow, of Laird Avenue, Warren, had stolen two TVs from Walmart.

Oct. 16 Arrest: After responding to a 911 call from a Wolosyn Circle apartment, police charged Travis L. Tomsik of Wolosyn, Boardman, with resisting arrest and obstructing official business. Officers had to use a stun gun because Tomsik, 29, refused several times to follow their commands before struggling with them, a report said.

Theft: Chelsey M. Shontz, 18, of Kathleen Drive, New Castle, Pa., was charged in the theft of $43 worth of merchandise from Target, 417 Boardman-Poland Road.

Arrest: Shedrick D. Nichols, 21, of Eastway Drive, Youngstown, was booked in Boardman Area Court on Market Street on one count each of domestic violence and public indecency, regarding unrelated incidents earlier this year.

Nichols was accused of exposing himself last April to a female employee of a Tiffany Boulevard motel, as well as threatening to kill his girlfriend in August, a report showed.

Theft: Two firearms were taken from a vehicle in the 1800 block of Oles Avenue.

Theft: Earlene Williams, 44, and Mack A. Peeples, 63, both of Lakewood Ave., Youngstown, were charged in the theft of $54 worth of body wash and other health-and-beauty products from Marc’s, 7121 Tiffany Blvd.

Theft: The owner of Stephens Construction & Home Improvements, 6927 Glenwood Ave., told police he was never paid $6,000 as a subcontractor for a construction project in Salem.

Oct. 17 Arrest: While investigating a suspicious person in the 7200 block of Market Street, authorities took Jessica L. Price, 36, into custody. Price, of South Roanoke Drive, Austintown, was wanted on warrants charging fraud and falsification.

The wedding of Rachel Skoczylas and Ryan Tekac took place June 16 at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

The Revs. Lang Collins and Richard Murphy officiated for the daughter of Thomas and Peggy Skoczylas of Warren and son of Jack and Marilyn Tekac of Poland.

A reception followed at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center in Boardman, and the couple honeymooned in Akumal, Mexico.

The bride’s fit-and-flare gown was designed with a high neckline and embellished with beads and embroidered lace.

Dr. Maria Sember was maid of honor, and bridesmaids were the groom’s sister, Kim Triveri, Danielle Johns, Caitlin Kosec, Amanda Toth and Ashley Rimmel.

They wore varying shades of pink and purple.

Best man was Mark Chapman, and serving as groomsmen were T.J. Skoczylas, the bride’s brother; Dom Triveri, the groom’s brother-in-law; Larry Knittle; George Farris; and Ed Kraft.

Lily Lussier was flower girl, and the groom’s nephews, Anthony and Kyle Triveri, were ring bearers.

The groom’s niece, Addison Woodburn, was flower girl, and ring bearer was Isaiah Morris, a cousin of the bride.

Mrs. Mashburn graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in education and is a kindergarten teacher at Valley Christian School.

Her husband earned a certificate of completion from New Castle School of Trades and is employed as a fabricator/welder at East Jordan Iron Works in Youngstown.

Mr. Tekac is employed as environmental director at the Mahoning County District Board of Health in Austintown. He graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from YSU.

Angela Morris and Clinton Householder, both of Akron, were united in marriage Aug. 11 at St. Charles Borromeo Church during a ceremony solemnized by the Rev. Gerald Delucia. A reception followed that evening in the Grand Ballroom at the Holiday Inn in Boardman.

The bride’s parents are Leonard and Darlene Morris of Boardman. James and Diane Householder of Lisbon, are the parents of the groom.

The bride wore a beaded lace dress with a sweetheart bodice and illusion straps.

Hand-sewn beading and crystal buttons enhanced the gown, and the full tulle skirt flowed to a chapel train. Her veil was accented with swarovski crystals.

Honor attendants were Alexis Burns and Gianna Marinucci.

Bridesmaids, wearing mauve dresses, were Lauren Penman and Jillian Penman, cousins of the bride; and Madeline Raabe.

Trevor Householder, brother of the groom, was the best man.

Groomsmen were Daniel Morris, brother of the bride; Nick Adkins; Jake Lucas; and Brett Hunt.

Mrs. Householder graduated from Akron University. She is an accounting analyist for the J.M. Smucker Co. in Orrville.

Mr. Householder graduated with with honors with a juris doctor degree from Akron University School of Law. He is an attorney with Brennan, Manna and Diamond in Akron.

The couple honeymooned in Aspen.

They reside in Akron.
