The Poland library hosted an event on Sept. 14 commemorating the 50th anniversary of the children’s story “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Bill Martin.
Library celebrates children’s book by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
The Poland library commemorated the 50th anniversary of the children’s story “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?“ with its “Happy Birthday, Brown Bear” event on Sept. 14. Librarian Vicki Peck read the story, written by Bill Martin Jr., and made sure to show the children illustrator Eric Carle’s creative pictures from the book. As she read the story, she placed magnets depicting the animals in the story on a board so the children could see the artwork and remember each animal that had been mentioned. The children read along aloud with Peck. The children sang “Happy Birthday” to Brown Bear after the story finished. Peck opened the event to play time and crafting after they sang. The library had different stations prepared and the children could move freely between them. They
set up an area where the children could create name bracelets in the corner of the children’s meeting room. They had magnetic building blocks in the other corner. Between the two stations, the library placed a beanbag tossing game where the children threw colored beanbags into rings of the same color. The stage of the children’s meeting room, across from the beanbag game, had an area for taking pictures with a big stuffed animal brown bear. Crafting tables sat outside of the room. The library designed these crafting tables for children to create collages similar to Carle’s collage artwork in the book. They supplied the children with cutout tissue paper, glue and paper with an animal outline on it. The Poland library hosts similar anniversary events every year. Last year, the library celebrated the 90th anniversary of A.A. Mine’s “Winnie-the-Pooh.“

Eric Barrett presented at the Poland library’s “Soil and Fertility for Gardens and Landscapes.” He went over common myths and typical problems people have with their garden. For example, he said that most people add too much lime to their soil and use fertilizer at the wrong parts of the year. He explained how to properly compost and use a rain barrel without risking affecting your crops with E. coli bacteria.

OSU Extension comes to library to teach gardening By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Eric Barrett, Ohio State Extension educator, set up the “Soil and Fertility for Gardens and Landscapes“ event at the Poland library to discuss how to make gardens nutrient rich on Oct. 11. Dr. Bill Snyder, Barbara Biery and Rhonda Harris joined Barrett at the event. They offered a free soil test to everyone who came to the event. They handed out a program, questionnaire and booklets information on gardening at the door. Barrett introduced himself and gave a brief overview
of what they would talk about during the event. Snyder, a retired chemistry professor, began his lecture on chemical makeup of soil after the introduction. He works with the master gardeners at the extension and teaches botany and other sciences to the staff. He explained the different levels of chemicals in gardens, like phosphorus and nitrogen, and what each chemical does. He showed sample results to a soil test designed to see what chemicals are lacking, abundant or just enough. He proposed solutions to solving each problem. He also talked about what can change
in a garden and what cannot change. Barrett presented following Snyder. He went over common myths and typical problems people have with their garden. For example, he said that most people add too much lime to their soil and use fertilizer at the wrong parts of the year. He explained how to properly compost and use a rain barrel without risking affecting your crops with E. coli bacteria. He numbered the most common ways to fix soil issues. Gardens need plants that grow in Northeast Ohio. Those plants need to be placed in areas with the correct amount of sunlight.
Many plants need space to bloom. Also, people need to use the correct amount of fertilizer in their gardens. Biery, former president of the Mahoning Valley Farm Bureau, spoke briefly at the end of the event. She spoke about the bureau and placed information on the organization inside the bags handed out at the beginning of the event. The OSU Extension has a weekly section in Thursday’s edition of “The Vindicator” called “Valley Grows.“ These articles cover tips for gardening, ways to get soil tested and events that the extension will be hosting.

AFS provides unique opportunity for foreign students by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Mona Steinle came to Poland on Aug. 11 from Germany through the AFS program to study at Poland Seminary High School. AFS offers exchange programs for students in other countries to come to the USA and vice versa. The Northeast Ohio Area Team of AFS has brought students from 20 different countries, including students from European countries like France and Finland, Asian countries like Japan and Thailand, and a student from Peru. The program allows the students to live with a host family in the area. Terri Windsor, the Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana County Chapter Chairperson, hosts Steinle. For Steinle, the program fulfills a “longtime dream“ to visit another country. The transition has not been too difficult for her since many people in Germany speak English. In situations where she has trouble communicating, she, as well as all students in the AFS program, have translators on their phones. She has had fun picking up American slang, too. She compared and contrast-
ed Germany to our area. The amount of cars and drivers amazed her since more people ride bikes and walk in Germany. She said most of our fast food restaurants are in Germany, but she finds them better in Germany. Small differences, such as the size of shampoo bottles, surprised her as well. The Poland community has treated Steinle very well since she arrived. The teachers at Poland Seminary High School have accommodated her and helped her. The soccer team welcomed her to the team and gave her some Poland clothing. The AFS students had an overnight stay at Camp Whitewood in Windsor, Ohio, where they got a chance to get to know each other better and play games. The students will have other events with each other, such as the Christmas party in December. They will also take trips to New York Cit y and Washington D.C in April. AFS welcomes many people to host exchange students. Host parents do not have to married and can come from any background. They only have to pass AFS’s background check and screening process and treat the students like part

of their family. Once approved, the families can contact the students through emails, letters and Skype. Both parties receive i n for mat ion on t he ot her through packets created by AFS. Families can host students for either a semester or a full year. Those not willing to commit to a full semester but still want to help AFS can host children for a couple of months. AFS refers to these families as “welcome families.“ Windsor hopes to get more students within the tri-county area involved with this “wonderful program and learning experience.“ Currently, the Ma honing Va lley on ly has three foreign exchange students, Steinle of Germany in Poland and Jessica Christen of Switzerland and Nicolas Lupi of Italy, who are both in Struthers. Windsor first got involved with AFS while in high school in 1979 when she studied in Norway. She still stays in contact with her host family. She found the program great because she got to learn about a different culture through firsthand experiences. She finds hosting students equally rewarding for the same reason.

The Davis Family YMCA hosted the opening reception for its annual “But I Know What I Like” art show on Oct. 8 at the Boardman facility. Two hundred and eighteen pieces of art, many of which are for sale, will be on display at the Y until Nov. 19. More than $700 in prize money was awarded. This year’s Best of Show recipient was Diane Beatty of Campbell. Her photographs, “Is It Just a Dream?” and “What Now?,” are depictions of a Youngstown steel worker on Black Monday. The Metro YMCA has purchased, and will exhibit, the photographs downtown, not only to honor those who lost their livelihoods when the mills closed, but also as a testament to the resiliency of this community. Other award winners were Jeff Olsavsky, Suzanne Pirlo, Loretta Tipton,Jeff Beede, Anits Gray, Lisa Lee Kohler, Don Wright, Elayne Bozick, Anthony Campanizzi, Diane Carlisle, Lindsey Hoskings, John Schlabaugh, Susan Stevens, Patricia Watson and Gloria Williams. Eight other artists received honorable mentions. BIKWIL is free and open to the public during regular Y hours. Ballots are available at the service desk to vote for a People’s Choice award, which will be announced on Nov. 1. All art sales commissions fund the John Patterson art scholarship for adults with disabilities. This year’s recipient is Ed O’Malley, who is recovering from a stroke. The show was made possible by the generosity of the community, including Giant Eagle, Ghossain’s Gourmet Market, Mcdonald’s, 90 local artists who have shared their talent, the dedicated Y office and maintenance staffs, and a committed group of volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes.
