Greenbriar shows guests gratitude By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
On Sept. 30 the Commons at Greenbriar hosted an appreciation function for participants in their fundraising Bed Race event and presented a check to representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association, Robert Seidler, account executive of Patriot Homecare and participant in the Bed Race, said it was his first time running a bed race, but he had a blast doing it. “It was a great turn out,” Seidler said. “All the residents really enjoyed it.” Greg Davis, co-owner of Patriot HomeCare, said he enjoyed the fun competition and team building in such a good cause. Executive Director of the Commons at Greenbriar Natalie Walzcak said she had fun at
the Bed Race, as did the residents. Residents cheered on participants as they raced around the pseudo-track and vote for their favorite theme – the team themed “Bonanza” won their hearts. “This was just such a good event,” Walzcak said. Dorothy Barto, director of the local Alzheimer’s network, was happy to be at Greenbriar to celebrate the success of the Bed Race. “It’s been a marvelous thing and unexpected,” Barto said. “They know the good work that we do and we are very grateful.” The money raised goes to various functions the network performs – research, community services, educational classes, support groups and more. “We help a lot of people,” Barto said.

Resident of Shepherd of the Valley Joan Roepke stood on the field with Youngstown State University’s softball team on Sept. 18.
Roepke revisits dugout days By Amanda Tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
Youngstown State University’s softball team walked onto the field with guest teammate Joan Roepke on Sept. 18 for their game against Kent State University. Shepherd of the Valley brought a surprised resident Joan Roepke to the field, an old dream she had during her countless years of both playing and coaching girls softball. Jerry Roepke, Joan’s son, said he was happy to see something so great happen to his mother. “It’s one of the better things that’s ever happened in my mom’s life,” Jerry said. Ruth Ellen Roepke, Jerry Roepke’s wife and Joan’s daughter-in-law, said she didn’t even know Joan played or coached softball until recently. Joan has the reputation of being quite modest, as those who weren’t around during the time of her softball career don’t know much about it. “She never gets her picture taken, never talks about herself,” Ruth Ellen Roepke said. YSU softball player Cali Mikovich found this experience to not only be great for Joan, but also for herself. “This is so cool, it makes me happy that somebody like this has their dream it still lives on – and this was our dream,” Mikovich said.
