Annual Survivor Run honors breast cancer survivors By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The second annual Survivor Run, organized by Megan Hruska of Canfield took place at Buckeye Horse Park Oct. 17. Hruska, a life-long horse enthusiast, started the Survivor Run last year in honor of breast cancer survivors, including her mother Sallie Sullivan. “Because of early detection, my mother’s odds of survival are very high. There is always a possibility the breast cancer could return, so I consider my mom a breast cancer survivor,” Hruska said. This yea r’s Sur v ivor Run consisted of a six-mile trail ride and a 12-mile trail ride to help spread awareness of early breast cancer detection and to get others involved in Sullivan’s passion for riding. Thirty-one riders, decked out in t he color of t he day - pink, participated in this year’s Survivor Run. Not only were the riders and volunteers dressed in pink, but the horses were, too, with pink manes, tails, ribbons and blankets. Hruska painted a pumpkin pink in honor of Deb Shaffer who participated in the ride last year and was diagnosed with breast cancer in the last year. Riders offered support and wrote encouraging messages to Shaffer on the pumpkin. “We cancer survivors are a strong bunch. We have a friend helping here today with our Survivor Run, Colleen Greene, who recent ly had a double mastectomy a nd last week

Youngstown State University’s softball team walked onto the field with guest teammate Joan Roepke on Sept. 18 for their game against Kent State University. Shepherd of the Valley brought a surprised resident Joan Roepke to the field, an old dream she had during her countless years of both playing and coaching girls softball. Jerry Roepke, Joan’s son, said he was happy to see something so great happen to his mother. “It’s one of the better things that’s ever happened in my mom’s life,” Jerry said. Ruth Ellen Roepke, Jerry Roep-

ke’s wife and Joan’s daughter-inlaw, said she didn’t even know Joan played or coached softball until recently. Joan has the reputation of being quite modest, as those who weren’t around during the time of her softball career don’t know much about it. “She never gets her picture taken, never talks about herself,” Ruth Ellen Roepke said. YSU softball player Cali Mikovich found this experience to not only be great for Joan, but also for herself. “This is so cool, it makes me happy that somebody like this has their dream it still lives on – and this was our dream,” Mikovich said.

Residents of the Commons at Greenbriar Frances and John Seffner recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on Aug. 23. The two share quite a story of the loss and finding of their wedding rings in their garden, binding them to one another throughout the years. Frances met her husband after WWII at a friendly gathering in town when he asked her to dance. “It was just a neighborhood

dance, that’s all there was, but oh what it seemed to be,” Seffner said. Frances lost her diamond ring while doing household chores, which John replaced with a simple gold band. Over the years, John offered to replace the ring, which Frances declined, feeling terrible about the loss of such a momentum of their lives together. The rings ended up shining through the garden, where they were somehow buried. The two celebrated not only the discovery of the missing wedding

rings, but also their journey through the highs and lows of marriage, both materialistically and emotionally. Frances said although maintaining such a relationship for all of those years didn’t always come easy, the two found ways to make it work through the good and through the bad. “You have some happy times and there’s some sad times, but you overlook the bad times and remember the good times,” Seffner said. “Those are the times that you wanna have children to remember them.”

The family circle also includes six grandchildren. Mrs. Kapics is a deputy clerk at Mahoning County Probate Court. Her husband retired in 2013. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. The Jenkinses mark anniversary on trip to Hawaii On a family vacation in July to Maui, Hawaii, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Jenkins of Franklin, Pa., marked their 45th wedding anniversary. Their daughter and her husband, Wendy and Jaison Fisher of Boardman hosted an anniversary dinner at the Hula Grill, Whalers Village on Ka’anapali Beach. Their grandchildren, Alexandria and Krystopher Baklarz of Boardman also attended. The former Jane Nasky and Mr. Jenkins were married July 18, 1970, in Holy Redeemer Church in Warren, Pa. Mrs. Jenkins recently retired after 35 years of service in Valley Grove School District. Mr. Jenkins is retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he was a letter carrier and union steward. He is secretary of the Pennsylvania State Association of Letter Carriers. The couple are members of Grace Lutheran Church in Franklin.

Muresans’ 50th celebrated at family dinner The children of Mr. and Mrs. Aurel Muresan of Canfield hosted a family dinner party Aug. 14 at Aqua Restaurant on the Sound, Corolla Outer Banks, N.C., in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary. Hosting were Dr. Mark Muresan of Dublin, Ohio; Jeannine Mylott of Aurora, Ohio; Matthew Muresan of Somerville, Mass.; and Gregory Muresan of University Heights, Ohio. The family also includes 10 grandchildren. The former Beverly Bezak and Mr. Muresan were married Aug. 14, 1965, in St. Luke Church in Boardman. Mrs. Muresan retired in 2000 from the Boardman Local School District, where she was a special-education teacher. She is a member of Mignonette Garden Club and Catholic Collegiate. Her husband was an anatomy teacher with Austintown Local Schools, retiring in 1999.

The Canfield High School Soccer Boosters honored the senior members of the Canfield High School boys soccer team during Senior Night on Oct. 6. Family, friends, teammates and classmates recognized the 12 senior players including, David Montezari, Justin Jickess, Alex Shaer, Alex Schill, Jowad Atway, Andrew Griswold, Tyler Young, Brandon Seybert, Ben Fueur, Christian Hume, Trevor Wilson and Jeff Joseph. Canfield soccer wins against Salem On Oct. 24, the Canfield boys varsity soccer team defeated Salem 6-0. This brings Canfield’s record to 11-4-2. RJ Thomas, Christian Hume, Ben Feuer, Tanor English, Alex Shaer and Tyler Young all had one goal for Canfield. Alex Schill, Feuer and Alec Simone had assists. Jeff Joseph and Nick Piersante had a total of three saves for Canfield.

Canfield soccer defeats Hubbard On Oct. 17, the Canfield boys varsity soccer team beat Hubbard 3-1. Justin Montazeri, RJ Thomas and Ben Feuer had one goal each for Canfield, with assists from Thomas and Alex Schill. Nick Piersante had five saves against Hubbard. Canfield’s record stands at 10-4-2. The junior varsity team defeated Hubbard 6-0. The junior varsity team finished the season with a record of 13-0-1.

Canfield Local Schools announces youth basketball skill academy The Canfield High School boys’ basketball program will be hosting the annual Cardinals’ Basketball Youth Skills Academy in preparation for the 2015-2016 basketball season. CVMS seventh-graders victorious over West Branch The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-graders hosted West Branch on Oct. 13 in a battle of unbeatens and came away with a 20-8 victory. Canfield opened the scoring driving 65-yards on 10 plays on the games opening series. Logan Torok took an option pitch around right end from 5-yards out for the score and a 6-0 Cardinal lead. Midway through the second quarter Canfield quarterback Ethan Fletcher found Tony Pannunzio racing down the right sideline for a 52-yard gain down to the West Branch 17. The Cardinals were unable to convert but on the following possession the Canfield defense and special teams rose to the occasion. CVMS linebacker Chris Sammarone broke through the Warriors line to sack their quarterback forcing a fourth down punt. West

Branch attempted a fake punt on the next play but were stopped by Ron Angelilli and Michael Minenok. Canfield cashed in on the ensuing possession when Fletcher scrambled 18-yards and dove to the pylon for the touchdown. Fletcher found Michael Mecure in the back of the end zone for the 2-point conversion and a 14-0 halftime lead. West Branch closed the gap on their initial possession of the second half when they drove 65-yards in eight plays keyed by a halfback pass to cut Canfield’s lead to 14-8. The Cardinals responded by driving 65-yards in 10 plays on the next possession. Fletcher picked up 15-yards on a fourth and 5 to keep the drive alive and then raced 28-yards on a fourth and 2 to paydirt. Canfield used a balanced attack to roll up 340-yards of total offense versus the Tigers. Canfield struck first on the game’s second possession driv ing 62-yards in eight plays. Quarterback Ethan Fletcher found Tony Pannunzio streaking down the right sideline with a 27-yard scoring toss to put the Cardinals on the board. Fletcher then found Alex Schneider alone in the corner of the end zone for the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0. Canfield cornerback Ronnie Angelilli picked off a Howland aerial early in the second quarter to set up the Cards next score. Fletcher sprinted 59-yards to the Tiger 2 before Chris Sammarone blasted in from two yards out to give Canfield a 14-0 lead. Howland answered on their next

possession to cut the lead to 148. Canfield found themselves facing a fourth and 25 on their next possession when Fletcher hit Pannunzio for a 46-yard gain to the Tiger 3-yard line. Sammarone hauled in a pass from Fletcher for the touchdown on the following play. Canfield went into their bag of tricks for the 2-point conversion when tailback Logan Torok took a toss from Fletcher, rolled right and threw back to Fletcher for the conversion to make it 22-8 at the half. Canfield took the opening possession of the second half and drove 65-yards in eight plays. Tight end Michael Minenok snagged a Fletcher aerial and rumbled 21-yards to paydirt. Fletcher then hit Sammarone with the conversion to extend the Cardinal lead to 308. Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach

The Department of Athletics at Westminster College invites applications for the NEW position of Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach. This is a full-time position which will provide direction for developing a new NCAA division III women’s lacrosse program. Westminster College is a coeducational, national liberal arts institution with historical ties to the Presbyterian Church (USA). The College enrolls approximately 1200 students and employs approximately 94 fulltime faculty. It is located in rural western Pennsylvania and is within easy driving distance of both Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Duties for the new head coach will include managing all aspects involved in starting a new Lacrosse program including coaching, recruiting and program administration. The inaugural season will begin in the 2016-2017 academic year. The program will operate within the athletic policies and mission of Westminster College, the President’s Athletic Conference (PAC), The Ohio River Women’s Lacrosse Conference (ORWLC) and NCAA Division III. Primary responsibilities will include: All aspects of coaching and administration of a Division III Lacrosse program Recruiting athletically and academically qualified student athletes Organizing, scheduling, and conducting practices and games Encouraging commitment to academic excellence Ensuring program compliance with all College, PAC, and NCAA rules and regulations Fundraising and outreach programs Additional duties as assigned A bachelor’s degree is required, with a master’s degree preferred. Preference will be given to applicants with previous college level coaching and recruiting experience.
