Police dog demonstrates detection and discovery By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com

On Oct. 9, Poland Union Elementary School invited police officers and their police dogs to a special assembly during Fire Safety Week. Although they didn’t show off their personal fire safety skills, they were able to show off their discovering skills and answer questions from students about the work they do as a team. Pola nd Union Teacher Phyllis Jeswald decided to invite these special guests to tie into what they were working on in class. “We just read a story about police officer and a police dog so we invited our local police officer so they could see a real police dog,” Jeswald said. Officer Jackson brought his friend and canine partner, Mido, to meet the students and show them a little of what work they do. “We’re best friends,” Jackson said. Mido is trained to detect drugs, people and things that are lost. Mido, who recently turned 2, has been police trained since he was 5-months-old. Neighbors | Amanda Tonoli “It’s pretty much all he knows is how Poland Union Elementary School students eagerly asked questions during a special presentation with Poland to be a police dog,” Jackson said. “Mido police officers and police dog Mido on Oct. 9. is very good at everything he does.”

it be fun if we could Skype?” Flacco said. Flacco’s son had to talk about it with his fellow teachers, but successfully completed two Skype sessions since the idea was put into action. “The school wants kids to have a lot of English influence,” Flacco said. “It’s working out perfect.” Flacco said she thinks this is a great opportunity to bring different cultures into the company while discussing the fundamentals they are working on like letters, words and introductory phrases.

Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted an Autumn Plant Sale on Sept. 27 and 28 to kickoff the fall season. Guests were welcomed to browse the selection of plants available for sale and wander the gardens to appreciate those that were not. M i l l C r e ek Me t r oPa r k s Gardener Marcy Dubec said the plant sales are an excellent place to find good deals. Dubec has her degree in horticulture and shared her expertise with all during the pla nt sa le t hroug hout t he weekend.

Volunteer Gladys Burnett came from out of town to help out with the plant sale. “I traveled down from Cleveland to get inspiration,” Burnett said. “I’m blown away by everything. It’s one of my favorite things to do is to come here and see the plants.” Burnett sa id she used to come to classes at the gardens often – beginning w ith the classes to become a volunteer for Mill Creek MetroParks. “I just came because I love it,” Burnett said. “You have great teachers here.” The Autumn Plant Sale will continue indoors at Fellows Riverside Gardens until they run out of plants.
