Christie wins literary award The Florida Writers Association, Inc. (FWA) has announced that Nancy Christie of Austintown won second place in the Royal Palm Literary Award Competition for her short story collection, “Peripheral Visions and Other Stories.” Christie’s short story, “Pandora’s Box,” part of that collection, was also a finalist in the same competition. “Peripheral Visions and Other Stories” will be released in 2020 by Oregon-based Unsolicited Press. Sausage and pancake breakfast to be Nov. 4 The Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus #3930 are sponsoring a sausage and pancake breakfast on Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the parish center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown. The menu consists of sausage and a variety of “all you can eat” pancakes and beverages. The cost for adults is $5 and $3 for children ages 12 and younger.

Santa at the library: reindeer games Santa Claus is coming to the Austintown library on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. Come and see Santa and a live reindeer. Although Rudolph doesn’t have a shiny nose, he’ll be at the library with Santa and hiss sleigh. Take your picture with Santa, see his reindeer and enjoy hot cocoa and snacks in the meeting room. You can make a reindeer craft, play games and maybe listen to a reindeer story or two.

Playtime at your library Read a story at the Austintown library on Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten.

Activities will vary at each program. This event is for ages 2-6. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Shop for a Cause event to take place on Nov. 11 The Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance is hosting its annual Shop for a Cause event on Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Ivory & Birch, located at 7631 Market Street in Boardman.

Use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten every Wednesday in November at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library.

BPJWL has meeting on Nov. 5 The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Nov. 5 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members are to bring Heifer International donation boxes to be turned in to the international office. Members are also to bring items for the shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child for the Juniorettes to put together at a later date. Hostesses for the meeting are Joyce Martin and Sperry Rongone. The Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women older than 18, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. Lego my library Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Austintown library on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.

Portrait drawing 1 If you have always wanted to draw a person, join the Austintown library on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. and they’ll teach you how to use a grid to copy a photograph. You must bring a high-quality photo of one face to the Austintown library by Nov. 12.

This will be a two-part program so there is time to finish the drawing.

For the second year, Austintown Fitch High School hosted an honorary Lunch with a Veteran event on Oct. 24.

The event was organized by Ken Jakubec, a U.S.M.C. Vietnam era veteran.

Jakubec is a member of the veterans day committee and the Students Serving Veterans group at Fitch and came up with the idea for the lunch last year.

“He thought it would be a really nice thing to do to honor our veterans and get our students involved,” said Brittany Bueno Austintown Communication Engagement Specialist.

Thirty veterans volunteered their time to spend all three lunch periods with students.

“We are probably one of the most veteran-friendly schools around,” Jakubec said. “These veterans are decorated all the way down except the medal of honor.”

Jakubec said that many of the veterans were highly decorated, including three veterans with Purple Hearts and four members of the Military Hall of Fame.

“The veterans were absolutely taken a back,” Jakubec said.

Jakubec said. “A lot of students haven’t experienced veterans depending on whether your relatives are in the service or not.”

Bueno also said that many students are interested in what it is like to enroll in the armed services because of their personal interest.

“We have a good amount of students that it is part of their interest,” Bueno said.

Jakubec said that the event is not about recruitment, but that he does like to discuss the opportunities the armed services have for young people.

“There’s a lot of great jobs in the service, now there are so many opportunities in the different branches of service,” he said.

He explained that depending on how long one would enroll, the armed services would also pay for your college tuition.

“It teaches you a lot of values, and discipline,” Jakubec said. “You don’t have to go into debt.”

Bueno said that Austintown Local Schools do a lot to encourage students into any future endeavour including college, vocational schools and military enrollment.

“If you’re not really sure and you’re like lost in space and you want a little discipline in your life why not join the armed forces,” Jakubec said.

Family hosts annual Step Out Against Bullying walk

Lauren Nicole Bow man’s family hosted the third annual Step Out Against Bullying walk at Austintown Park on Oct. 14.

The walk is offered with the hope of bringing awareness to bullying.

The event was organized by Shawne Wilfong, Lauren’s aunt.

“It’s just to bring awareness to bullying, if people need help we have information for them numbers they can contact to get help,” Wilfong said.

The walk was around the park, ending at first base on one of the fields where balloons

were released.

The family has an abundance of information available, including Stomp Out Bullying flyers that provided information on emergency numbers and chat rooms that can provide support.

“To let everyone know you don’t have to get bullied there are people to help you,” Wilfong said. “And if you see someone getting bullied to step in and take a stand.”

POLICE REPORTS Oct. 23 Arrest: Police were dispatched to Austintown Area Court on Mahoning Avenue to take custody of Amir L. Hakeem, 47, of Crandall Avenue, Youngstown, who was wanted on a warrant from the court.

Recovered property: A bicycle was found at a business in the 500 block of Victoria Road.

Possible theft: A wallet was lost or stolen at a branch of the Austintown Post Office, 6000 Mahoning Ave. Animal complaint: A woman in the 100 block of South Main Street told officers a dog had bitten her. The county dog warden was notified.

Domestic violence: Abbigayl M. Sakmar of North Beacon Drive, Austintown, was charged with the crime after her father alleged Sakmar, 21, became upset with the accuser and bit his lower back, leaving redness to the affected area.

Oct. 24 Theft: A Pinecrest Avenue resident told police of having made a $1,600 deposit to Energy Wise Home Improvements in Struthers, only to see that no work was done to the residence.

Oct. 25 Attempted burglary: A door was damaged to a home in the 400 block of South Raccoon Road, presumably as someone tried to break in.

Robbery: Two men reportedly fled on foot after a robbery at First American Loans, 1698 S. Raccoon Road.

Theft: A shoplifter reportedly stole about $54 worth of merchandise from Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave. Oct. 26 Arrest: Authorities responded to a report of a temporary employee causing problems at a business in the 300 block of Victoria Road before arresting a co-worker, Terry L. Luckey Jr., 29, of Neilson Avenue, Youngstown. He was wanted on Youngstown Municipal Court warrants that

included a driving-under-suspension charge.

Possible theft: A wallet was lost or stolen at a business in the 600 block of South Raccoon Road.

Robbery: Two gunmen reportedly stole money and credit cards from a home in the 4300 block of Lanterman Road.

Summons: Officers received a complaint about two men soliciting on behalf of an energy company in the 2400 block of South Raccoon Road before issuing a summons charging Daniel T. Brazel, 21, of Parma, with failing to have the proper vendors permit.

Theft: A Westminster Drive resident reported $300 stolen.

Oct. 27 Arrest: After handling a dispute at a North Canfield-Niles Road business then conducting a traffic stop nearby, authorities took Jawwaad R. Pusey of Carlotta Drive, Youngstown, into custody upon ascertaining Pusey, 32, was wanted on a bench warrant accusing him of failing to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court.

Theft: About $75 was stolen from a wallet at a business in the 800 block of North CanfieldNiles Road.

Overdose: A man was given 4 mg of naloxone to block or reverse the effects of opioids and taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after a reported drug overdose in the 4200 block of Stark Drive.

Oct. 28 Arrest: While dealing with a problem between two people in the 4300 block of Wedgewood Drive, officers took Shannon L. Hrosar, 39, into custody. Hrosar, who listed addresses on Wedgewood in Austintown and Fifth Street in Struthers, was wanted on a Campbell Municipal Court warrant accusing her of violating a court order.

school who committed suicide in 2016.

Lauren played softball both for Austintown Girls Softball League and for Mill Creek Park.

She was described by her aunt as a sweet girl and someone who loved dogs.

“She was a happy fun loving girl,” Wilfong said.

Wilfong said that the first year they had the walk she attached a card to the balloons that were released so when they are found they can be returned

to the family.

She said that a few balloons were returned, including one found on a school baseball field and one by a man who said his dog discovered it on a walk.

“Its just eerie,” Wilfong said.

“That’s how you can tell she’s here.”

The first walk was attended by more than 300 people according to Wilfong, but due to inclement weather less people were able to attend last year’s.

Community members were met by warm weather for October for the third walk, bringing out large groups including members of the Austintown

girls softball team.

“We were blessed by good weather,” said Robert Bowman, Lauren’s father.

Robert gave a speech before the walk, thanking the community for coming out to support the family.

“We know you came out here not to take a stand against bullying but to support me and my wife and our family, and we appreciate you so much,” he said.

Robert told stories about Lauren, her relationship with her sisters and how she was during her lifetime.

“I miss my daughter dearly, I miss her every day,” Robert said.

The farms planted a pumpkin patch this year, which they let community members walk through to choose their own cannon ball sized pumpkin to take home.

“We love to have people out to the farm to learn about the animals and the things we grow here,” Markley said.

To get to the patch, community members rode a tractor through the farm.

Tractor rides were $1 and it was $3 to pick a pumpkin.

“It’s a lot of fun, even being stuck out in the rain people still love it,” Markley said.

During the ride Markley gave facts about the farm and the pumpkins and other plants they grow there.

“We planted our pumpkins a little late this year, so they are actually still growing,” Markley said. “So some are more ready than others to be picked.”

Though it rained during the day, community members were encouraged to walk through the muddy field until they found their perfect pumpkin.

Once they returned to the farm by tractor they were offered stickers to decorate their pumpkins with that were provided by the park.

The barns were also open throughout the event for commu n it y members to wa l k through and see all the animals.

Tractor rides ran throughout the day from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“It’s always a good time when we get people out to the farm for the seasonal activities,” Markley said.

The classes run once a week every Tuesday through September and October.

The Swing and Salsa dance classes will run for five weeks, and then the type of dance will change.

McPhail said that new students are welcome each week, and the class always reviews basic steps before learning something new which is good for new dancers.

“I do what I do with any beginner class,” McPhail said. “If someone misses a week, its fine. The only thing that’s consistent is that we review every week.”

She said that there is a range of students who attend, including people as young as 13 and as old at 85 and with a variety of physical abilities.

This is the fourth year McPhail has been teaching dance classes in the park.

“We believe dancing should be affordable to everybody,” McPhail said.

“The people who would be most benefit from dancing they are often the ones who can’t afford to go sign a contract and spend thousands.”

McPhail said that historical dance has been a very popular past time in the area.

“Dance in Youngstown has always been a popular social outlet,” McPhail said. “You cant go to Columbus and find as much dance as we have in this area.”

She said that the social, health and mental benefits of dance are so important they should be available to anyone.

“This class is beneficial to new people who are just getting started and aren’t sure if they are going to like it,” McPhail said.

Anne Garwig and David Lucas were united in marriage July 22, 2017, during a ceremony at First Unitarian Universalist Church in Youngstown that was officiated by Kristina Spaude. A reception took place that evening at the D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

The bride’s parents are Glenn and Heidi Garwig of Boardman.

The groom is a son of Kimberly Lucas-Palm of Youngstown and the late David Lucas Sr. The bride wore a mermaid-style satin and tulle gown with silver beading and a fingertip veil adorned with beaded trim.

Shannon Bakies served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Phoebe Koehler and Carly Psenicka.

The responsibilites of best man were entrusted to Benjamin Lucas, brother of the groom. William Happney and Craig Wright, cousins of the groom, and Eric D’Avignon served as groomsmen.

The brothers of the bride, Joseph and Thomas Garwig, gave special readings.

Mrs. Lucas graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and a master’s of fine arts from the NEOFMA Consortium.

The couple traveled from Miami Beach Fla. to Key West for their honeymoon.

Lascolas celebrate 50th anniversary with luncheon BOARDMAN

Mr. and Mrs. Tony Lascola of Boardman celebrated 50 years of marriage recently with a luncheon with friends and family. The couple were married Sept. 28, 1968, at St. Stanislaus Church in Youngstown.

The Lascolas are the parents of Matthew (Laura) Lascola of Canton and Annette (Carl) DeSiato of Canfield.

Five grandchldren, Joseph, Carl, Makayla, Alexa and Liam, complete their family.

Mrs. Lascola, t he former A lice Okusewsky, worked as a managing cosmotologist for Great Escape Hair Salon before retiring in 2006.
