BPJWL has meeting on Nov. 5 The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Nov. 5 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members are to bring Heifer International donation boxes to be turned in to the international office. Boardman hosts annual Halloween parade

Boa rd ma n E lementa r y schools hosted the annual Halloween parades.

Amy Radinovic, Boardman’s communication coordinator, said that the parade is a long standing tradition that the

school looks forward to every year.

“All of the students and teachers love dressing up every year,” Radinovic said.

Each elementary school hosted their own parade, where students walked through the parking lot to show off their costumes.

Community members gathered around the edges of the parking lots to take photos and watch as students and staff walked past.

“We get large turn outs at these events, the families always enjoys coming out to see the costumes,” Radinovic said.

Costumes varied from clas-

sic witches and princesses, to video game characters and emoji’s.

Many of the teachers dressed in group costumes as well, including one group from Stadium Drive Elementary school who dressed as beanie babies.

“Its a great way to get into the holiday,” Radinovic said.

Lions Club donates to Quilts from the Heart

Pat DeAscentis, representative for Quilts From the Heart, accepted a donation of $500 from the Boardman Lions at the club’s meeting on Oct. 11 at Los Gallos in Boardman. The organization makes blankets so that every child that enters Akron Children’s Hospital or St Joe’s receives a hand-made blanket. Donations are used to purchase supplies to create the hand-made blankets. Beck honored for recovery efforts

Help Network of Northeast Ohio recently presented M. Frank Beck, D.D.S., with a Mental Health and Recovery Advocacy Award in recognition of his ongoing efforts to reduce substance abuse and opioid overdoses in the Mahoning Valley. The award is given to an individual or group in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana county who has significantly contributed to the local Mental Health and Recovery system. Dr. Beck was recognized for spearheading Mercy Health’s efforts to address the opioid epidemic. He serves as lead physician in Mercy Health’s initiative to prevent and treat substance abuse.

Boardman High School science teacher Rick Sypert was one of many staff members to donate blood at the BHS Semi-Annual Blood Drive on Oct. 18. He says this is his 10th year participating in the blood drives at the High School, which is as long as he’s been a teacher at BHS. Twice per year, student council helps to organize the blood drives and many students also donate. Red Cross representatives say Boardman’s blood drive comes at a time when the need for blood and platelet donations are critical. Boardman will host a second Blood Drive this spring. This October, Boardman elementary art teacher Susan Farkas celebrated nine years as a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer in October of 2009. On Oct. 19, she was thrilled to celebrate a “Pink Out” with her students at Robinwood Lane Elementary School. Farkas wore a tie dye pink shirt with ‘survivor’ scrawled across the chest, and a section of her jet black hair was temporarily painted pink. Her first-graders drew their Halloween pictures with patterns at the top. All of Boardman’s four elementary schools have planned “pink outs” and similar events this month to raise cancer awareness, as well as donations to fight cancer. Farkas has been teaching in Boardman for 27 years and teaches all elementary students in the district.

Non-Violence Week poster winners Neighbors | Submitted

Six Boardman High School art students were chosen as winners in Youngstown’s Non-Violence Week poster contest. They were all recognized in the Graphic Design Category. Their work can still be seen on the walls of the SMARTS gallery on Champion Street in Youngstown, as well as the Barnes and Noble in Boardman. Ohio Non-Violence Week originated in Youngstown in 2009, and started being observed statewide in 2013. This year, it took place Oct. 7-13.

The theme for this year’s contest was “non-violence.”

Boardman sophomore Jenna Hughes won first place and a $50 prize for her graphic design titled “Anti Violence.” Second place went to Fatima Rehman and third place to Migel Santiago. Tyler Williams, Emily Olexa and Andrew Gibson received honorable mentions. Western Reserve Knitting Guild meets on Nov. 13 The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will be meeting on Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building, Fair Park in Canfield. Begin the evening with a potluck dinner; members are to bring a favorite dish to share and

Nation Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized Sophia McGee (left) and Ryan Coldren as National Merit Commended students. Daniel Turillo (right) is a National Merit Semifinalist, and is eligible to compete for 7,500 scholarships worth more than $31 million in spring 2019.

National Merit Program recognizes three Spartans Boardman High School recently announced that three of their seniors have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program for the 2018-19 school year.

Sophia McGee and Ryan Coldren have been named Commended Students. Daniel Turillo is a National Merit Semifinalist, who will go on to compete for substantial scholarship money this spring.

As a semifinalist, Turillo is among less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, and is included among the highest scoring entrants in each state.

Turillo is president his senior class, a member of National Honor Society, a leader of the 4-year-long undefeated Quiz Bowl team and a member of the marching and jazz bands, as well as orchestra.

“I am looking into pursuing political science or history in some way,” said Turillo. “Ohio State and the University of Chi-

cago are my top college choices right now.”

As Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program, McGee and Coldren are among 34,000 students across the nation who are recognized for their exceptional academic progress.

McGee is a varsity runner on the cross country and track teams, plays in the band and is active as a member of Emerging Leaders, Ocean Bowl and Envirothon.

“I plan on advocating for and working to further environmental conservation in college and beyond,” said McGee. “My career is unclear as I could choose environmental policy, biology, engineering or other paths to help the planet.”

Coldren is active in the College Credit Plus program as a senior, spending most of his time at YSU earning college credit and preparing for his future.

“I have everything from scared-todeath-never-tried-it-before to some of my intermediate to experienced level dancers,” McPhail said.

The classes run once a week every Tuesday through September and October.

The Swing and Salsa dance classes will run for five weeks, and then the type of dance will change.

McPhail said that new students are welcome each week, and the class always reviews basic steps before learning something new which is good for new dancers.

“I do what I do with any beginner class,” McPhail said. “If someone misses a week, its fine. The only thing that’s consistent is that we review every week.”

She said that there is a range of students who attend, including people as young as 13 and as old at 85 and with a variety of physical abilities.

This is the fourth year McPhail has been teaching dance classes in the park.

“We believe dancing should be affordable to everybody,” McPhail said. “The people who would be most benefit from dancing they are often the ones who can’t afford to go sign a contract and spend thousands.”

McPhail said that historical dance has been a very popular past time in the area.

“Dance in Youngstown has always been a popular social outlet,” McPhail said. “You cant go to Columbus and find as much dance as we have in this area.”

She said that the social, health and mental benefits of dance are so important they should be available to anyone.

“This class is beneficial to new people who are just getting started and aren’t sure if they are going to like it,” McPhail said.

Westminster College Office of Student Affair is seeking candidates for the position of part-time Shuttle Driver. The Shuttle Driver provides rides to and from various locations that are on the Student Affairs transportation schedule. Eileen Hyland and Frank and Joyce Santisi, all of Boardman, are announcing the engagement of their children, Maura Hyland and Joseph Santisi, also of Boardman. Miss Hyland also is the daughter of the late James Hyland.

The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Nov. 3 at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown, and a reception at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman will follow that evening. Invitations have been issued for both events.

The bride-elect graduated from Casal Aveda Institute with a degree in cosmetology and is a stylist at Bella Sole Salon in Boardman.

The prospective groom graduated from Youngstown State University with a degree in psychology and is an IT consultant for Valley Office Solutions, also in Boardman.

Kellee Davis, Daniel Raseta Jr. to marry Nov. 10 POLAND

Jeffrey and Kimberly Davis of Boardman and Daniel Sr. and Shirley Raseta of Campbell are announcing the engagement of their children, Kellee Ann Davis and Daniel Raseta Jr., both of Poland.

Anne Garwig | David Lucas YOUNGSTOWN

Anne Garwig and David Lucas were united in marriage July 22, 2017, during a ceremony at First Unitarian Universalist Church in Youngstown that was officiated by Kristina Spaude. A reception took place that evening at the D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

The bride’s parents are Glenn and Heidi Garwig of Boardman.

The groom is a son of Kimberly Lucas-Palm of Youngstown and the late David Lucas Sr. The bride wore a mermaid-style satin and tulle gown with silver beading and a fingertip veil adorned with beaded trim.

Shannon Bakies served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Phoebe Koehler and Carly Psenicka.

The responsibilites of best man were entrusted to Benjamin Lucas, brother of the groom. William Happney and Craig Wright, cousins of the groom, and Eric D’Avignon served as groomsmen.

The brothers of the bride, Joseph and Thomas Garwig, gave special readings.

Mrs. Lucas graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and a master’s of fine arts from the NEOFMA Consortium.

Her husband earned bachelor’s and

master’s degrees from Youngstown State University.

The couple traveled from Miami Beach Fla. to Key West for their honeymoon.

The couple have planned a yearlong trip to China where they will teach at Rutgers University’s business institute at Northeast Normal University in Changchun.

Lascolas celebrate 50th anniversary with luncheon BOARDMAN

Mr. and Mrs. Tony Lascola of Boardman celebrated 50 years of marriage recently with a luncheon with friends and family. The couple were married Sept. 28, 1968, at St. Stanislaus Church in Youngstown.

The Lascolas are the parents of Matthew (Laura) Lascola of Canton and Annette (Carl) DeSiato of Canfield.

Five grandchldren, Joseph, Carl, Makayla, Alexa and Liam, complete their family.

Mrs. Lascola, t he former A lice Okusewsky, worked as a managing cosmotologist for Great Escape Hair Salon before retiring in 2006.

Her husband retired from Ohio Edison as a distribution dispatcher after more than 30 years of service. He served The couple are members of St. Domiin the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam nic Church in Youngstown.
