Ruth Kritter, Chaplain of the Ladies Auxiliary and chairman for the event, organized the event with cochair Sue DeVito, a trustee for the Ladies Auxiliary. The event raised $3,925.75. She said that Ramsey has improved greatly since he began going to the school. A portion of the proceeds will go to creating a playground on the school property. Ramsey had asked for one and Kritter agreed the schools should have one. People and companies donated money and goods to the event, resulting in 150 baskets for the raffle. Wonderstruck Artisan Market and Classes hosted a Painting for a Cause event on Oct. 5 to raise money for Austintown Fitch’s concert choir. The funding went toward the choir’s trip to New York City in April. They received an invitation to perform at Carnegie

Hall. They will also have a performance at the VA New Jersey Health Care System, a Veterans Affairs health care system in Lyons, New Jersey. The seniors of the choir said performing at VA health care systems give them “an experience that is bigger than ourselves“ and makes them feel that their “talent has a pur-

pose.“ The choir performs at a similar hospital every year. The Painting for a Cause class filled up prior to the event. Stephanie Miller, Wonderstruck’s owner, taught the class of 42 adults how to paint a New York City skyline at sunset. Miller’s demonstration painting had “Carnegie Hall April 2018“ on it, reinforcing the rea-

son for the event. The choir students helped at the event. They ran concessions and directed the painters to the cafeteria. T he concer t choi r hosts multiple fundraising events throughout the year to help the program and fund their trip. They will have a chili cook-off with the school’s band on Nov. 12 and a Santa’s workshop craft show on Dec. 17. They

also have their concert on Dec. 3. Wonderstruck has numerous Painting for a Cause events throughout the year, usually five to six a month. They also have workshops, classes and parties. Austintown library book club discusses historical literature by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Austintown library’s “...And the Rest is History“ book club met in the library’s small children’s meeting room on Oct. 2. The book club, run by librarian Starr Jones, discusses historical books, both fiction and nonfiction. The members all read something different and come to the meetings to share what they have read. An example of a typical book would be the discussion of Kathy McKeon’s book “Jackie’s Girl: My Life with the Kennedy Family,“ which Jones read and shared. The book covers McKeon’s time spent as Jackie Kennedy’s personal assistant. The story talks about the triumphs and tragedies of the Kennedy family through a close personal lens. In atypical fashion, another member shared her own personal history as opposed to a book. Shirley Bartlett was asked

to write her memories of World War II, and she shared them with the history-themed book club. She read portions of her manuscript detailing the memories of her family members who had gone to war, what life was like for those on the home front in general and her personal home life. She recounted her brothers’ roles in the war, the way the government made coins with cheaper metals and practicing air raid drills at school and home. The group often talks about current-day politics during the club. Bartlett contrasted the patriotism during World War II to the patriotism people show today. Bartlett also brought up current news stories of the day. Jones said this happens often between the members. The club meets the first Monday of every month. The next meeting will be on Nov. 6.

Drumlines bring the beats to Boardman High School By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Boardman High School hosted its fifth annual Boardman Drum Night on Oct. 2 where eight drumlines, including Boardman and Austintown Fitch, all performed one after another. The event featured drumlines from the high schools of Western Reserve, McDonald, Liberty, Champion, Austintown Fitch, Howland and Boardman. Youngstown State University’s drumline also performed. Each band played different drumline cadences and choreographed movements to their

performance. For example, some bands included bending motions while they played. Howland High School had a student circle around the band. Thomas Ruggieri, director of Boardman Marching Band, said he had “almost no input“ into what the students did for their performance. He did say that he encouraged them to do more movements and to write their own music, but the students planned, wrote and choreographed the performance. The Spartans swayed and marched at times during their performance. They used marimbas during their perfor-

mance, which few other bands had done. Several band members switched instruments in the middle of the performance. Austintown Fitch’s band director, Wes O’Connor, also did not coordinate his drumline’s performance at the event. He gave all credit to drumline captains Zach Potkanowicz and Seth Welch. He said he and percussion instructor Bill Gonda only spectate the event. “As far as preparation for the Boardman Drum Night, our drumline captains decide what to play and the logistics of the performance,” O’Connor stated.

Before t he event bega n, Austintown Fitch’s drumline practiced by beating rhythms on the tables and their legs. They danced while performing with some drummers jumping while playing. Their tenor drum player had solo during their presentation. After each band performed individually, all the drummers strapped their drums back on and played together. Boardman instructed that they would start by playing a common drumline cadence, then each band would play their own variation on that cadence. Once each band had a chance to play the cadence,

all they bands performed it together. Some bands packed up or went to their band buses after the final performance, but others stayed and created a drum circle where the schools jammed together. The drumlines circled around a few players who would play a rhythm and the drum circle would repeat it. Admission to the Drum Night was $2 dollars. The Boardman band sold cookies, food and refreshments, and they had a 50/50 raffle. All proceeds from the money raised went back to the band.

BBB teaches community about protection against scammers By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Austintown library invited Melissa Ames of the Better Business Bureau on Oct. 5 to talk about the common scams and how to prevent them. Ames, Vice President of Better Business Bureau Services in the Youngstown area, explained the different ways that scam artists can attack, through the internet, over the phone and in person, and what to do if they do get your private information. She said that phishing happens the most often. In a phishing scam, the attacker will pretend to be someone else from an organization. For example, scam artists will pretend to be from a nonprofit charity organization after a disaster in order to get your personal information. A scammer can go after anyone. She has gotten reports from teenagers, middle-aged people and senior citizens. Each claim has a different victim profile. She told her own story about being the victim of identity theft. Criminals can steal someone’s identity in a number of ways, including data breaches and filing through trash. Identity theft can also come from phishng.

New technology has led to more ways of being scammed. In one story, Ames explained that person had his external hard drive connected to his computer. A criminal froze both his computer and external drive, rendering both unusable. While many reports of scams happen over the phone or on the internet, many contractors still scam people in-person. Ames stressed to always check the contractors and not sign anything until researching the company. Ames gave the attendees protective tips to follow. For example, one should never give out his or her social security number to strangers. The BBB has taken steps to help prevent scams before they happen. They list reputable businesses on their website for the local area. They also have created a scam tracker that maps out where scams have happened in the past. Ames has worked for the BBB for 14 years. She has presented at PLYMC libraries multiple times throughout her career. The program educates businesses and consumers on what they should be aware of while doing business in the marketplace.
