Participants in the Trunk or Treat decorated their trunks, and the trunks were judged by Campbell, Shelly Israel and Brain Perrett. A trophy was awarded to the best Christian-themed trunk. With approximately 63 children and 17 trunks, Campbell was pleased with the turn out and liked seeing the families enjoy themselves. “Our congregation was so creative in decorating their trunks. They have put a lot of thought and effort into tonight. And the children are having a great time gathering candy and checking out the trunks. CVMS seventh-graders suffer first loss of the season The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade football team fell to Austintown Middle School 14-8 to finish the season six and one. Canfield High School senior and Red Out leader Sydney Lewis raised $6,000 for the American Heart Association by selling ‘One Life, One Heart, No Excuses’ T-shirts, which she designed for this year’s event on Sept. 22.

CHS students ‘Red Out’ heart disease By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

It was a sea of red at Bob Dove Field as the Canfield Cardinals hosted the Struthers Wildcats on Sept. 22. The ‘Red Out’ was part of Canfield High School’s spirit week to raise awareness about heart health and dollars to fund lifesaving research for the American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The school sold red T-shirts for $10 each to students, faculty and community members to wear at the game. “This is a really fun way for everyone in the school and the community to create a visual statement that supports a great cause,” said Canfield senior and Red Out leader Sydney Lewis. Lewis also designed the “One Life, One Heart, No Excuses” Tshirts for this year’s event. Students have already raised more than $6,000, and shirt

sales continued at Canfield High School through the football game. In the spirit of friendly competition, Struthers students also took part in the project. The students sold white versions of the same T-shirts for $10 at their school to wear at the game. “It’s really amazing to see these kids from different schools come together for a common cause, even while they’re playing against each other,” said Tracy Behnke, youth market director for the Youngstown American Heart Association. “It’s a testament to how much they care about their health, that of others and their community.” Lewis also serves as the spirit coordinator for Canfield High School. “This project was so much fun. I had a really good time organizing it and raising money for the American Heart Association. It gave our students the chance to support a great cause while showing their school spirit,” Lewis said.

We are continuing tradition here with our fall tailgate and will continue throughout the school year with our annual chili cook off and a spaghetti dinner,” said Canfield Local Schools Superintendent Alex Geordan. Canfield’s school mascot, Big Red, arrived in style on a Cardinal Joint Fire District fire truck with lights flashing and sirens blaring to pump up the crowd. Geordan said a big focus of the tailgate is for everyone to reconnect to start the new school year and to meet new friends. “The tailgate is a way for everyone to reconnect at the beginning of the new school year. As the young students create new friendships at school, the parents have a chance to meet their new friends and other parents here,” Geordan said. Canfield Local Schools PTO member Ma rci Muck leroy served as chair of the event. “I love being a part of the Canfield community, and this is one way I can give back to my community. I am really enjoying seeing all the Canfield pride here tonight,” Muckleroy said. After the tailgate party, attendees headed over to Bob Dove Stadium to the support the Canfield Cardinals varsity football team and cheer them to a victory.
