The Poland Township Board of Trustees, Bob Lidle, Eric Ungaro and Joanne Wollet, along with Melissa Gadjos of the Timberbrook development, Bill Gardner of the Canterbury development and Dwayne and Diana Wilson of the Tuscany development attended the ground breaking ceremony for the State Route 170 sidewalk project on Oct. 22.
Ground is broken on sidewalk The Poland Township Board of Trustees, Bob Lidle, Eric Ungaro and Joanne Wollet, were joined by representatives of the various developments along Dobbins Road for a ground breaking ceremony on Oct. 22 for the Dobbins Road sidewalk project. Joining the trustees were Melissa Gadjos of the Timberbrook development, Bill Gardner of the Canterbury development and Dwayne and Diana Wilson of the Tuscany development. The project is approximately one half of a mile and will be constructed along the south side of Dobbins Road, from the eastern edge of the Poland High School parking lot to the entrance of the Tuscany Estates development. The Dobbins Road sidewalk
project will cost approximately $148,000, and the grant obtained for the construction will pay for 80 percent of that cost. The project is scheduled to be completed between the first and third week of November, depending upon the weather. The trustees plan to continue to work on future infrastructure projects, such as additional road paving projects, as well as sidewalks. Lidle hopes to get funding for the rest of State Route 170, up to Harvest Run and along Clingan Road from Dobbins to the Swim Club. All participants present agreed that the sidewalk is a great addition to the area, adding to the convenience of the area and making it feel more connected.

Poland Union Elementary PTO hosted art classes throughout the day for all children in the school on Oct. 24. The students decorated pumpkins with the help of members from the PTO and the teacher. They used paint, brushes, pompoms, yarn, glitter, glue, feathers and googly eyes to decorate. “It speaks volumes about our community,“ principal Michael Masucci said of the help of the nearly 60 parent volunteers at the school. Katina Soltis, chairperson for the classroom art events with the PTO, helped the students decorate the pumpkins. The PTO provided some of the materials while other resources came from the art room supplies.
Soltis said the event has a great deal of parent involvement, which the children enjoy. She continued to say that she believes the event assists the teachers. Gina Chiaro, a second-grade teacher, explained that all the teachers at Union teach art classes. “Because we do not have an art teacher, they look for other ways to bring art to the classroom,“ Chiaro said of the PTO art classes. The elementary school brought in almost 400 pumpkins for the event. The children got to take their pumpkins home after the event. The PTO hosts art classes with seasonal and holiday themes multiple times through the school year. Their next project will be a holiday decoration in December.

Union introduces new math program by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Poland Union Elementary School hosted a parents only event on Sept. 21 to explain the school’s new approach to math instruction. The school implemented the Bridges math program for each grade in the school, kindergarten through second. The other Poland schools have not adapted the Bridges program yet. Principal Michael Masucci explained Bridges as a “fundamental shift“ and described the school’s use of the program as “the implementation of change.“ He compared it to the new style of thinking in the book and film “Moneyball,“ where a similar shift in thinking led to great results in baseball. The Bridges curriculum has two parts to it: the Bridges portion and the Number Corner portion. Bridges includes different daily, weekly and monthly planning for instruction. Number Corner introduces reinforces different skills and concepts. The program can have up 75 minutes of math instruction daily. Kindergarten teacher Kendra Gura said Bridges delivers more challenging lessons than what had been taught in previous years, but went on to say that the program uses a variety of instruction techniques and activities, which make the program more exciting for the students.

Poland Union Elementary principal Michael Masucci gave a presentation covering the school’s new Bridges math program to parents of kindergarten students in the school’s auditorium on Sept. 21. He later gave the same presentation to the parents of the first and second grade students.
She noted that they have not had one math worksheet through the first few weeks of school. Gura also said the lessons involve the students much more and many lessons are student driven. Both Masucci and Gura talked about “work places“ in the Bridges program. These work places ask students to work together in small groups to problem solve. These groups reinforce vocabulary and mathematical skills while making the students think critically. Masucci gave parents a hand-
out for any questions that parents may have on the new math program. Since the school put the program in place this year, the teachers and staff may not have the answers to questions right away. The school has reached out to Canfield, Austintown and Struthers schools to discuss Bridges, since these schools have already implemented the program. These professional relationships between schools will hopefully lead to all the schools succeeding academically, Masucci said.

Poland library gives students ASL lesson with snacks by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Poland library hosted a lesson on lea r ning A mer ica n Sign Language after the school day during its “Snack N Sign“ event on Sept. 29. The lesson went over some basics of ASL. Librarian Karen Steed taught the students the alphabet and a few phrases, such as “thank you“ and “I love you.“

For each color, she asked a different question about the person. For example, she asked, “What is something you do well?“ to the students who picked orange. Next, she taught the students the ASL alphabet. She

placed placards demonstrating each letter before the class began. She showed them how to do each letter and walked around to make sure the students did it correctly. The children went and had snacks after learning the alphabet. The library provided the children with chips and a drink. Steed said she wanted to provide the children a snack for them since they had
just come from school. The group sat in a circle after eating. Each child took a turn spelling their names in ASL. Steed said that the best way to learn the ASL letters is to spell out words as opposed to going through the alphabet chronologically. The students did a craft at the end of the event. They decorated a paper with the sign of the first letter of their name on it. Steed gave
the children glitter, glue, crayons and stamps. The stamps had ASL signs for letters on them. Steed studied at Kent State Un iversit y. She prev iously worked as an ASL interpreter. She had been using ASL for 25 years. The program just began with this lesson and will run on the last Friday of every month. The next lesson w ill take place on Oct. 29.
