Making stoneware mugs at Fellows Riverside Gardens By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
On Oc t . 13, M i l l C re ek MetroParks craft class instructor Lynn Cardwell hosted yet another popular creative class, Nature-Inspired Stoneware Mugs, at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Attendees had the opportunity to craft mugs out of stoneware clay, a high-fire clay, with various natural-looking designs.
Because of the high-fire clay, the finished products were durable, food safe and dishwasher safe, Cardwell said. She educated her class about various types of clay, noting which one was best fitting for each type of creation. Cardwell, a former Youngstown State University art student, said she has been doing crafts like this for 20 years.
“As far as teaching, ...we’ve done a l l k inds of t hings,” Cardwell said. Cardwell instructs numerous classes at Fellows Riverside Gardens, her favorite aspect is being social. “I like interacting with people and seeing how excited they get when they make something — like, ‘Oh, I can’t believe I made this,’” Cardwell said. “It’s a nice
interaction.” Cardwell is hosting an upcoming class, Fused Glass Ornaments, on Nov. 3 at 5:30 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Ed Hassay (left) president of the Diabetes Partnership of the Mahoning Valley, posed with Dr. Michelle Anania, partner with Ankle & Foot Care Centers Austintown office, and a check representing some of the funds raised by the physician group at its September golf benefit. In addition to the $12,00 the Diabetes Partnership raised, Anania and her partners raised $2,500 for the American Diabetes Association Northeast Ohio office.
Benefit led by Austintown podiatrist raises money for diabetes groups Ankle & Foot Care Centers announced that its September golf benefit raised $14,500 for two organizations that provide diabetes education and resources. Dr. Michelle Anania, partner at Ankle & Foot Cares Austintown and organizer of the event, recently presented a check for $12,000 to the Diabetes Partnership of the Mahoning Valley. Another $2,500 was donated to the American Diabetes Association Northeast Ohio Office. Some 100 golfers participated in the Sept. 18 golf outing, which was supported by dozens of local corporate and private sponsors. The annual benefit has raised more than $140,000 for diabetesrelated work since it debuted in 1999. The Diabetes Partnership has used the funds for supplies and care for diabetic patients of the
Midlothian Free Health Clinic in Youngstown and supplies for diabetic students at St. Christine’s School in the city, among other locations. “These funds help us make a meaningful impact in the lives of local people with diabetes,” Dr. Anania said. “We appreciate all of those who contributed to the golf benefit, including the staff who volunteered their time to make it a success.” “This commitment from the Ankle & Foot physicians enables us to address immediate and growing needs of local uninsured diabetics while allowing us to also save toward our planned future goals. For example, we would like to start a scholarship fund for college students struggling with diabetes,” Edward Hassay, president of the Diabetes Partnership, added.
