Canfield Village Middle School hosts food drive Students at Canfield Village Middle School are having a canned food drive from Nov. 12-30. Canned food can be dropped off at the middle school. The donation will be given to Second Harvest Food Bank to help with the holidays.

Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be on Nov. 19 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W Main St. in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories,” “The Gifts of Change” and “Rut-Busting Book for Writers,” the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’

Gathering Place event There will be a Gathering Place event at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. There will be a special program to

honor veterans. Lunch will be provided by The Woodlands and blood pressures will be taken promptly at 11 a.m. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is held on the second Monday of the month every month. Theater has high-tea fundraiser The Hopewell Theatre (formerly the Victorian Players) will host a Victorian High-Tea Fundraiser on Nov. 18 from 3-6 p.m., at the Piccadilly Parlour, located at 114 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Proceeds from this fundraiser will support its handicap accessibility project. A luncheon will be served, beginning at 3:15 p.m. and will consist of a cup of soup (your choice), tea sandwiches, sweets and tea (or coffee).

Entertainment by the Just Friends Community Chorus will begin at 4 p.m. Background music will be provided by Darlene and Joe MacBenn on harp and flute.

There will be a live auction and a 50/50 raffle, all proceeds going to the handicap accessibility project. Door prizes will be awarded. Victorian dress is encouraged but, not necessary. Due to limited seating, reservations are required. The cost is $30 per person and $15 of the ticket price is tax deductible. Seman to speak at Boardman Historical Society meeting Tim Seman, Genealogy and Local History Librarian, will give a presentation on “The History of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County” at 10 a.m. on Nov. 10 at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave. His lecture is sponsored by the Boardman Historical Society and is free to the public. He has worked in archives and libraries for more than 30 years including the Library of Congress, American University and the Ohio Historical Society. Since 1999, he has been with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, currently working as genealogy and local history librarian. The Boardman Historical Society meets on the second Saturday of each month from September through May at 10 am at the Boardman library for a lecture on some aspect of local history. CHS students celebrate Halloween

In keeping with long-standing Canfield tradition, Canfield High School students got into the spirit of Halloween and were all in when dressing up for the holiday on Oct. 31.

For the school’s annual Hal-

loween Dress Up Day, students wore full costumes and also set up elaborate stage areas in the school’s hallways where they brought their characters to life with the help of extraordinary props.

Group costumes included characters from “Mario Kart,”

“101 Dalmations,” cat burglers, hunters with tree stands, “Princess and the Pea” and race car drivers. Other costumes included a woopie cushion, orange construction cones, kitchen appliances, three blind mice and Chik-fil-a cows.

The main attraction of the

school’s annual Halloween tradition was the haunted house, which the art classes and art club created during the past several weeks. The haunted house, themed Dead Gulch Mine, was open all day for CHS students, faculty and staff to enjoy - and be scared out of their wits.

Fifth- and sixth-grade students will be performing “The Velveteen Rabbit” at Canfield Village Middle School. “The Velveteen Rabbit,” or “How Toys Become Real,” is a British children’s book written by Margery Williams and illustrated by William Nicholson. It chronicles the story of a stuffed rabbit’s desire to become real through the love of his owner. The curtain goes up in the front gymnasium of Canfield Village Middle School on Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door. Admission is $6 for adults and students. Children under 4 are free.

The 4-H’ers Unlimited had a busy and exciting summer. The club made anti-bullying posters that were delivered to local schools. The schools can then display these posters during the school year in hopes of creating a more tolerant community. The yearly picnic took place at Boardman Park this summer. Some members showcased their culinary skills by bringing food that they learned how to make while completing their nutrition projects. 4-H’ers Unlimited members also participated in food and nutrition, clothing, small project, Cloverbud and safety judging. During these events, members received numerous awards, including several State Fair selections. State Fair qualifiers were Ethan Knauf, Justine Knauf, Jenna Vrabel and Kaleigh Williams.

Additionally, Kaleigh Williams received an Outstanding of the Day (top 20 percent) for her quilting project and received the Clock Trophy (first place) for her Purrfect Pals project (pictured). During the summer meetings, several members gave informational presentations about their projects and also about the animals they planned to take to fair. The Cloverbuds also got to talk to the club about a quilting project that they completed where they learned that quilting was once a way to tell stories and that traditional quilts have meanings behind them. Finally, the club participated in the Canfield Fair, a big event for 4-H. Those interested in joining 4-H’ers Unlimited should contact Kent Knauf at 330-272-2075.

Ca n f ield V i l lage Midd le School sixth-grade band students put on a mini concert for parents, grandparents, relatives and friends during their band period on Oct. 26.

CVMS Band Director Jim Volenik invited sixth-grade band parents to the class.

“The purpose of the mini concert is to show the parents how much new music the kids have learned since September.

In fifth grade, the band played

in unison for the entire year.

Beginning in sixth grade, they begin to play music that is polyphonic. Polyphony is music that typically includes a contrapuntal separation of melody and bass,” Volenik said.

The sixth-grade band showed their talent by performing “The Magnificent Five,” “Early Bird March,” “Five Note Concerto,” “Starlight,” “Homework Blues” and “Bugler’s Dream.”

The band was assisted by Youngstown State University student teacher Kyle O’Donnell.

After the performance, Volenik thanked the parents for coming to the mini concert.

“Thank you for coming today.

Kids, give your parents, grandparents, friends and relatives a round of applause for coming to see you today,” Volenik said.

Next, the sixth-grade band will begin to work on music for their holiday concert, which will take place at 7 p.m. on Dec. 12 in the Canfield High School auditorium. The concert will also feature the seventh-grade band and the high school concert band.

Book drive launches to support Rotary Club’s Little Free Library

Little Greek Fresh Grill seeks to spread joy of Greek cuisine.

George and Pattie Campos, owners of the Boardman Little Green Fresh Frill franchise, are working to bring Greek heritage and comfort food to the community with special deals until Nov. 30.

The Campos family, who are active in the local Greek community, opened the restaurant because they wanted to offer fresh, healthy Greek food to the community.

Little Greek Fresh Grill, a fast-casual restaurant with an American influence, emphasizes homemade, fresh Greek dishes created from generations of traditional family recipes. The Boardman location offers dine-in, take-out or catering.

“This is our first location in Ohio,” said Nick Vojnovic, Little Greek Fresh Grill president. “We hope to open an additional area location in 2019.”

The Mahoning County Land Bank will launch a book drive on Nov. 1 to replenish Little Free Libraries throughout Mahoning County and stock up for six additional libraries planned for the year ahead.

New and used books will be accepted through Nov. 30 at Rulli Brothers stores in Austintown and Boardman, St. Christine Elementary School and Campbell Memorial High School.

“These Little Free Libraries are a key part of our strategy to turn post-demolition lots that were once abandoned or vacant properties into productive spaces,” said Debora Flora,

executive director of the Land Bank. “We’re running low on our inventory and, with the holidays approaching, we really appreciate the support of our friends, families and neighbors who are able to pass on their books to others.”

The Land Bank has partnered with the Rotary Club of Youngstown to install three Little Free Libraries in Campbell and Youngstown. The Land Bank and Rotary work with a national not-for-profit organization, Little Free Library, based in Hudson, Wisc., to help build community in neighborhoods.

“These Little Free Libraries

provide a place to give free books to children, strengthen literacy among adults and, at the same time, create gathering places where neighbors can share their favorite books, literature and stories,” said Elayne Bozick, a member of the Youngstown Rotary Club and lead contact for the book-sharing project.

The Land Bank is asking for children’s books, cookbooks and best-seller nonfiction novels to build the inventory for these Little Free Libraries.

MetroParks celebrates fall with pumpkin themed events

Mill Creek MetroParks hosted their annual pumpkin carving and pumpkin walk events.

Fellows Riverside Garden offered free pumpkin carving at the service station Oct. 11-13.

Rob Chismar, the Garden Supervisor at Fellows Riverside Garden said that the event is a

great way for everyone to participate in the annual pumpkin walk.

“Its just a really nice family event,” Chismar said.

He explained that every year the park gets pumpkins from Less and Less farms in Canfield.

This year they have around 13 thousand pounds of pumpkins, or about 1,000 individual

pumpkins to carve.

“We will get about 800-1,000 people to carve pumpkins,” Chismar said.

Park employees and volunteers preemptively gut the pumpkins so that anyone who is interested can come in and simply carve them.

Jason Campbell, Canfield Presbyterian Church children’s ministry leader, welcomed the large crowd to the event.

“Good evening children of all ages.

On behalf of our Christian Education Committee, welcome to our sixth annual Trunk or Treat. Thank you for coming out. I’d like to thank Detwiler Farms for helping us with the pumpkins and thank everyone from our congregation who pitched in and helped decorate and get ready for this event,” Campbell said.

Campbell said the annual event is open to the entire community.

“Our Trunk or Treat is an annual event and is open to the community. We have pumpkins for the kids to decorate, a

pizza dinner and, of course, candy. We invited our congregation to decorate the trunks of their cars and pass out candy to the children. We have about 15 cars out here for the kids to visit,” said Campbell said.

Participants in the Trunk or Treat decorated their trunks, and the trunks were judged by Campbell and volunteer judges. A trophy was awarded to the best Christian-themed trunk.

“It’s hard to judge the cars. Everyone does a great job decorating their trunks. It’s hard to pick a winner,” Campbell said.

With approximately 75 children and their families, Campbell was happy with the turn out. That number is up from last year.

“This event is for all ages, and it’s really nice to see a range of ages. We sent flyers to Operation Blessing, our preschool and after school program to let the kids and their parents know about the event,” Campbell said.

The couple will be united in marriage May 3, 2019, during a private ceremony.

A reception will take place that evening at Unforgettable Moments Reception Hall in Austintown. Invitations will be issued.

The bride-elect graduated from Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing and is a licensed practical nurse.

She is the nursing supervisor at the Columbiana County Jail.

The prospective groom attended ETI Technical College and works for Exal Corp. in Youngstown.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert T. Campana celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary surrounded by family and friends.

The couple’s children, David (Mary Ellen) Campana of Canfield and Loreta (Robert) Lape of Boardman, hosted the event. They are also the parents of Mark Campana of Millville, Minn.

Sixteen grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Campana married the former Regina C. Buser on July 16, 1953, at St. Rose Church in Girard.

Mrs. Campana was the secretary at St. Stanilaus School until she retired in 1986.

Jamie Petrus and Dr. Eric Soller were united in marriage June 9 at the Youngstown Country Club during a ceremony that was officiated by Michael Watson. A reception took place after the service.

The parents of the bride are Karen and Joseph Petrus of Glendale, Ariz.

The groom is a son of Cynthia Appleton Soller of Boardman and the late Dr. Mark Brady Soller.

The bride wore a French crepe, mermaid-style gown with a V-neck and back and a cathedral train.

Danielle Petrus, sister of the bride, was the maid of honor. The bridesmaids, wearing black gowns, were Missy Dutton; Ashley Soller, the groom’s sister-in-law; Valentina Zappia; and Nicole Straub.

The responsibilities of best man were performed by Aref Jadallah. Craig and Brian Soller, the groom’s brothers; Jacob Rivera; Jordan Karzmer; and Brian Hudec were the groomsmen.

Mr. and Mrs. Ron Kerensky of Austintown were joined by their family Oct. 11 to observe the couple’s 50th wedding anniversary.

The Kerensky’s children are Jim (Jen) Murphy of Austintown; Michael (Kristen) Kerensky of Canfield; Ron (Kendra) Kerensky of Aurora; and Craig (Bertie) Kerensky of Cuyahoga Falls.

Brittany, Angela, Ryan, Lauren, Emily, Tyler, Anna, Haley, Meredith, Lilly and Liam are the couple’s grandchildren.

Mr. Kerensky and the former Cathy Murphy were married Oct. 12, 1968, at St. Christine Church in Youngstown.

The couple are retired opticians, and Mr. Kerensky is a veteran of the U.S. MaDr. Soller is a graduate of Arizona rine Corps.

The Kerenskys are members of St. State University with a bachelor’s dePatrick Church in Youngstown. gree in science; and Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine with a doctor of dental medicine degree. He is a resident at University Hospital’s Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, specializing in pediatric dental medicine.

The couple honeymooned in Mexico and reside in Cleveland.
