CHS presents “Singin’ in the Rain” By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Canfield Players Drama Club will present “Singin’ in the Rain” as the fall musical at Canfield High School at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 17 and 18. There will also be a matinee performance at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 19. Under the direction of Dr. Becky Heikkinen, the show will feature about 50 students from the drama club. “Singin’ in the Rain” is set in 1927, and Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a famous onscreen romantic pair. Lina, however, mistakes the on-screen romance for real love. Don has worked hard to get where he is with his former partner Cosmo. When Don and Lina’s latest film is transformed into a musical, Don has the perfect voice for the songs. But Lina’s

voice is not fit for film, so Kathy Selden is brought in to dub her scenes. While she is working on the movie, Don falls in love with her. When the jealous Lina finds out the strategy of the studio, she does not want to share the credits. Ticket costs are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Reserved seating tickets are available by calling the ticket line at 330-7027128. A special discount of $10 per seat is available to groups of ten or more for the Sunday matinee performance. In the event that the Canfield football team is in a playoff game on Nov. 17, the opening night will be moved to Nov. 16 and all tickets for the Friday performance will be honored on Thursday. The Canfield Village Middle School student council is sponsoring a food drive to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank. Nonperishable food items will be collected in homerooms from Nov. 8-30. Last year, CVMS families donated 2,733 pounds of food for Second Harvest Food Bank. There are donation boxes in the school lobby. The most needed items year-round are peanut butter, cereal, canned vegetables, canned fruit, tuna fish, dry pasta, canned soup, macaroni and cheese, boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, gravy mix and canned yams.

Local church to host Gathering Place event There will be a Gathering Place even at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, in Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. This Gathering Place program will recognize and honor veterans who have previously signed up at Lord of Life Church office at 330-5333531 prior to Nov. 6. The program will inform veterans of the many services that are available to them. Lunch will be provided following the program. Arrive promptly at 11 a.m. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is offered on the second Monday of the month every month. up with a group theme, such as a deck of cards, three blind mice, ice cream cones, Santa, Mrs. Claus and elves, Toy Story, Lilo and Stitch, Harlem Globetrotters, lifeguards, A League of Their Own ballplayers, SpongeBob and Patrick, Scooby Doo and the Gang, Mother Nature and the four seasons and tourists.

Teachers, administrators and staff also got into the Halloween spirit by dressing up in costume. CVMS Principal Judd Rubin dressed as the Tin Man, with CVMS Assistant Principal Mike Flood dressed as the Scarecrow, and school secretaries Diane Pacifico dressed as the Cowardly Lion and Barb Noll dressed as

Dorothy, to round out the “Wizard of Oz” characters. The Canfield Village Middle School PTO provided doughnuts for the students, with PTO volunteers passing out the doughnuts at all grade-level lunch times. Prizes were given for the best costume at each grade level.

The Canfield High School girls varsity soccer team clinched the District II District Championship with a victory over Lakeview High School on Oct. 26. The Lady Cardinals beat the Lakeview Bulldogs 2-1 at Bo Rein Stadium in Niles. The park had a pumpkin decorating area in the basement of the Davis Center. The downstairs of the Davis Center also included panels from Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society, Audubon Society of the Mahoning Valley, the Garden District Neighborhood, Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown, zoologist and bug enthusiast Jim Smolka, artist Jim Green and author Hugh Earnhart, as well as a face painting room with Jeanne Rees and her daughters.

Mill Creek Metroparks hosted its annual Pumpkin Walk at Twilight event at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Oct. 15. The gardens had pumpkins along the walkways and on ledges throughout the park. The park also had music, face painting and other events in the park and in the D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center. T he pa rk opened workshops for pumpkin carving to the public between Oct. 12-14. More than 500 people came to the workshops. This added to the collection of pumpkins the park already had for the event, which gave them a total of more than 1,500 pumpkins. The Ford Nature Center and pumpkin artist Ron Roberts had displays in the Kidston Pavilion overlooking Lake Glacier. The Ford Nature Center had a “Creatures of the Night“ exhibit, where they showed pictures, skins and taxidermy of different animals. Roberts had a set up of some of his extremely detailed pumpkin carvings for his display.

J.D. Eicher sang and played guitar in the gazebo for the walkers. His music could be heard all along the pumpkin paths. The park also had events inside the Davis Center. The Kravitz’s Garden Café had cookies and hot dogs for sale and gave away free apple cider. In the basement, they had a panel from different people and organizations. The panel included the Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society, Audubon Society of the Mahoning Valley, the Garden District Neighborhood, Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown, zoologist and bug enthusiast Jim Smolka, artist Jim Green and author Hugh Earnhart. The two rooms in the basement also were the locations for events. Jeanne Rees and her daughters had a face painting area in one room and the other room had a place for children to decorate small pumpkins. Mill Creek Metroparks has run the event for 12 years. The walk has evolved over the years, including the additions of Jim Smolka four years ago and Ron Roberts two years ago.

Gorant Chocolatier hosts holiday food drive Gorant Chocolatier is “Lending a Hand to Stop Hunger” in the Mahoning Valley this holiday season by hosting its third annual food drive. The goal this year is to collect 300 pounds of food. “Every year that we participate in this food drive, our donations increase,” said Mary Ann Yerage, Gorant Purchasing Manager. “We started strong at more than 200 pounds, but want to keep adding onto that momentum.” Starting Nov. 1, customers can donate non-perishable food items

and receive 5 percent off their purchase for each item donated (up to 25 percent). The food drive continues through Nov. 16. Participating locations include the Boardman Factory location (8301 Market Street) and the Canfield/Westford Commons location (4259 Boardman-Canfield Road). The most needed food items for this holiday season include boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, canned yams, canned vegetables and gravy mix. Second Harvest Food Bank of

the Mahoning Valley, a member of Feeding America, assists 148 hunger-relief programs in the Tri-County area. These include church pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, shelters for battered women and after-school programs. In 2016, the Food Bank distributed 10.5 million pounds of food, including 3 million pounds of produce. The bride is the daughter of John and Diane Hvisdak of Lowellville, and the groom is the son of Patricia Bates of Canfield and Carl Bates of Port St. Lucie, Fla. An outdoor reception was held at the home of the groom’s mother. The couple took a honeymoon cruise of the Mediterranean. The bride wore an ivory/champagnecolored lace sheath gown with a front slit halter neckline, open back and a chapel-length train. The maid of honor, Lindsay Svetlak, wore a navy blue dress. The best man was Joseph Bates, the groom’s brother. Mrs. Bates graduated from the Jamison School of Radiology in New Castle and is employed at Alliance Radiology Mr. Gutierrez retired from t he at Belden Village in Canton. Youngstown Police Department in 1982 as a lieutenant/detective and later retired in 2006 from the U.S. Postal Service as a distribution clerk. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962.

Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Gutierrez of Canfield were honored for their 50th wedding anniversary with a cocktail and dinner party April 22 at Squaw Creek Country Club. They celebrated with family and friends, and their daughters, Kellie Gutierrez and Kristen (David) Mancini and grandchildren, Dylan and Gia Mancini served as hosts. Mr. Gutierrez and the former Maureen Farran were married April 22, 1967, at St. Edward Church in Youngstown. They were also honored at a special wedding anniversary Mass that took place at St. Columba Cathedral on June 11. Mrs. Gutierrez retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2010 after 32 years of service as the manager of vehicle maintenance. She also held various other positions, including human-resources specialist and supervisor of delivery and collections.

Mr. Bates graduated from the University of Akron with a bachelor’s degree in business. He is employed at Agency Real Estate and is the owner of Hoover’s Concessions.
