LESTAT
At Angels For Animals in Canfield, there is the beautiful Ella. Ella is a very dignified Tortie who was born on March 10, 2013. She came in to the shelter on Nov. 4, 2015. She was returned to Angels when the landlord changed hands and told her former owner that no cats were allowed. Her identification number is A088312. If you would like to meet Ella, stop by Angels For Animals to see her. She is very loving and gets along with the other cats in their room.
This timid little kitty is named Lestat. Lestat is a handsome gray/blue smoky guy at about 5-months-old. He will definitely need someone to work with him to get over being scared. He should be the only cat in the household, at least for awhile, but he does get along with other cats in the room so maybe one other cat would help him come out of his shell. He loves to play! Lestat’s identification number is A141087.

Canfield Players present “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” A cast of 40 Canfield High School students will perform tap dance and jazz numbers in an array of costumes as they present the musical, “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.” The curtain will go up at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 18-19 and at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 20 in the Canfield High School auditorium. Tickets are available by calling the school ticket line at 330-7027128 or can be purchased at the door. Adult tickets are $14 and students are $10. The production is recommended for the entire family. “Irving Berlin’s White Christ-
mas,” the musical, is loosely based on the 1954 movie by the same name that featured Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. While there are minor plot divergences in the musical, the skeleton of the White Christmas movie plot remains intact. Two army buddies, after serving the 151st division in World War II together, go on to form a successful duet, Wallace and Davis. Bob Wallace (Jonathan Scurich), is the straight man to Phil Davis’ (Zach Bernat) fun-loving ladies’ man. The two meet their counterparts in Betty and Judy Haynes (Haley Tura and Kate
Hartshorn), sisters of an old army friend. Phil and Judy click instantly (“The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing”), while Betty and Bob butt heads. Phil and Judy devise a plan to head north to a ski resort in Vermont for Christmas (“Snow”), and come to find out that not only is it 80 degrees there but Phil and Bob’s well-respected commanding officer General Waverly is running the debt-ridden resort. Broadway songbird Martha Watson (Lexi Denney) shares several comedic numbers as
the General’s secretary. Bob, who’s surprisingly not too angry that he’s in Vermont instead of Florida, arranges for the musical revue to relocate to perform in the resort’s barn in order to bring some business in for the general (“What Can You Do With a General?”). Love burgeons between Bob and Betty, miscommunication ensues (“Love, You Didn’t Do Right By Me/How Deep Is the Ocean”) and resolves itself (“I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm”), and in the end there’s a “White Christmas.”
Friendly Squares monthly dance The Niles Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 12 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller. For additional information, call Gene at 330-534-4426 or 330-5063370.

Children have smashing time at Sprout Club By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Ch i ld ren at tended t he monthly Sprout Club on Oct. 13 at Fellows Riverside Gardens. The theme of Sprout Club was potatoes and Lynn Zocolo, horticulture educator, taught the children about different kinds of potatoes and what they’re used for. The program started off with children coloring a picture of potatoes until everyone arrived and was ready to begin. Zocolo got the children engaged by passing around different kinds of pota-
toes for them to feel, smell and look at. “We are going to be mashing potatoes, doing some science experiences, food coloring. Things like what is a potato, how do you like to eat potatoes,” said Zocolo. After the children learned about the different types of potatoes and how they are grown, each child got their own potato to mash. When the potatoes were mashed, Zocolo and other volunteers warmed up the potatoes for the children to put in some milk and butter to make mashed potatoes to eat. There was food coloring
passed around for the children to make their potatoes change different colors, while still being edible. One la st t h i ng Zocolo showed the children was a science trick. She showed how she could put a straw into a raw potato. Zocolo walked around the room showing and allowing the children how the straw could go into the hard potato. At the end of the program, the children were able to take home their snack of potato chips and apple juice. The next Sprout Club group will be on Nov. 17 and will talk about plant teas.

CHS athletes honored with traditional walk-through By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
In keeping with the Canfield High School tradition to honor athletes who have earned the right to compete at the state level, the school had a walkthrough for sophomore golfer Hannah Keff ler, sophomore tennis player Sydney Cianciola and senior tennis player Hannah Cianciola on Oct. 19. Keffler earned a trip to Columbus to compete in the Division 1 Golf State Championship tournament on Ohio State University’s Grey Course on Oct. 2122. Keffler earned her first varsity letter as a freshman, while also garnering all-conference first team honors. “This is a huge accomplishment for Hannah to make as an individual in Division 1. She shot a stellar two over par at districts, which is a score of 74. Within the field, she tied for fifth among 96 players, which means she tied for first as an individual player,” said Diane McCall, Lady Cards golf coach. The Ciancola sisters won the Division 1 title in doubles, earning them a trip to Mason, Ohio, to compete for state-level honors
Oct. 21. As members of Coach Rob Stephens’ highly-successful school tennis program, Sydney won her first varsity letter last year as a freshman, while Hannah has lettered and been named all-conference and divisional Player of the Year in each of her three preceding seasons. She also earned All-Ohio honors in doubles tennis last year, playing with partner Ashley Kaleel. “I am very proud of both Sydney and Hannah. They are playing very well and have a great shot this year,” Stephens said. Both Sydney and Hannah said it helps to have their sister as a partner. They also appreciate all the support they have received. “We would like to thank our parents and coaches for all their help and support. Especially for all their support for all four years of my tennis career,” Hannah said. Escorted by the Canfield Cardinal, Keffler and the Cianciola sisters walked through the school, during which students, faculty and staff took a moment to gather outside their classrooms to give congratulate the state-bound athletes and give them their best wishes.
