Soup-er November at Canfield United Methodist Church During the month of November, in the spirit of the very first Thanksgiving, people are reminded to share food and blessings with those less fortunate. It is in this spirit that the Joyful Praise Children’s Choir and the missions team at Canfield United Methodist Church, located at 27 South Broad Street in Canfield, are joining forces to make it a “Soup”er November to remember. During both of the Thanksgiving services on Nov. 22 (at 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.) the Joyful Praise Children’s Choir will present “Stone Soup.” It is the classic story of people being transformed from grumpy to joyful as they are inspired to give for the common good. The children are working hard to prepare this musical play with a message and they ask that if you attend, you bring

with you a non perishable food item to donate. In conjunct ion w it h t his per forma nce, t he church’s mission team is going to host a soup sale between the two services and after the second service with soups made by members using their favorite recipes. Each soup will sell for $4 and the money raised will go to support area charities. Any soup that is not sold that day will be delivered to church me m b e r s w ho a r e hou s e bound. The Canfield United Methodist Preschool children have also been learning about the importance of giving to the less fortunate. Their first collection of food given at Chapel with Rev. Susan Brown has been delivered to Julie Kercher, Operations Director of Operation Blessing.

CUMC celebrates 75th annual Bazaar and Fall Festival By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Canfield United Methodist Church hosted its 75th annual Bazaar and Fall Festival Oct. 16-17, with several shops filled with a large variety of items. The shops offered housewares, books, gifts, floral, baked goods, men’s and women’s clothing and children’s clothing and toys. All items for the bazaar are donated by members of the church. A silent auction was available in the atrium, with items also donated by members of the church.

The Bake Shop featured the church’s famous Methodist Coleslaw, among a variety of tasty homemade baked good and treats. “The Hull family of White House Fruit Farms donated the cabbage and peppers and the ladies and gentlemen of our church made the coleslaw. They then let us store the finished product in their refrigerators. We also made 50 pounds of our famous peanut brittle to sell in the Bake Shop,” said Mary Ann Bryan, Bazaar and Fall Festival general chairman. The Parlor Shop offered hand-

made gifts, Halloween crafts, fall floral and Christmas floral made by church member Julie Kercher. For children 4-10, there were carnival games and childcare was available for children ages 2-3. A luncheon was available and featured homemade soup, chili, sandwiches and desserts. According to Bryan, proceeds from the Bazaar and Fall Festival are donated to several local charities and causes, including Operation Blessing, Rescue Mission, Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts, Canfield Care Net, the church’s confirmation class and more.

“It feels so good to raise money to purposely and for the direct intent to help those in need,” Bryan said. Bryan has been the chairman of the Bazaar and Fall Festival for 10 years, taking the job after helping with it for several years. “It is a joy to be a part of this event because it benefits so many people. I look forward to it every year. I am surrounded by angels here. I truly appreciate all the people who chip in to make this such a success. The money raised benefits so many people who really need it,” Bryan said.

‘Movember’ mustaches promote cancer awareness Man Up Mahoning Valley, Mercy Health Cancer Centers, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley and NEO Urology team up to drive age-appropriate prostate cancer screenings. One in seven American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives. More than 233,000 will be diagnosed this year, and 29,480 of them will die. Still, many men — including an unusually high percentage of men in the Mahoning Valley — don’t get age-appropriate prostate cancer screenings. As part of an ongoing effort to change that, Man Up Mahoning Valley, Mercy Health Cancer Centers, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley, NEO Urology, General Motors Lordstown, UAW Locals 1112 and 1714, Youngstown Phantoms Hockey and several community leaders are joining forces to generate awareness about prostate cancer and encourage men to get the age-appropriate screenings that could save their lives. Some of the participants gathered for a ceremonial Movember kickoff at Partners for Urology Health in Austintown. “It’s a fun way to get involved and raise awareness, and it doesn’t cost anything,” said Jonathon Fauvie, gift officer, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley. Movember takes place Nov. 1-30. Participants start the month clean shaven but grow and groom their mustaches the rest of the month. “The mustaches, especially on men who don’t usually have one, are a conversation starter,”

Don Koenig (left) executive vice president and COO at Mercy Health Youngstown, and prostate cancer survivor Steve Burbrink join Phantom, mascot of Youngstown Phantoms Hockey, in marking the start of Movember.

Fauvie explained. “When somebody says something about it, that’s an opportunity to say ‘I’m growing it to raise awareness about prostate cancer and the need for age-appropriate screenings.’” With prostate cancer, there are no symptoms until the disease is in advanced stages. Because most prostate cancers can be cured if they are discovered early, routine screenings are imperative. Screenings consist of a digital rectal exam and a blood drawn to check the level of prostate specific antigen (PSA). It’s important to get both the exam and the PSA test because with many men, suspicious findings are detected by one and not the other. Urologist Dan Ricchiuti, M.D., recommends men begin annual prostate cancer screenings at age 40 – earlier if there is a family history of prostate cancer. African-American men in the

Mahoning Valley are twice as likely to get prostate cancer and to die from it as any other race, according to Man Up Mahoning Valley. “Our goal is to raise awareness about prostate cancer and encourage men to talk with their doctors and get annual screenings,” Fauvie said. “We hope we’ll have men throughout the entire community challenging their friends, families and coworkers to grow mustaches and spread the word about the importance of prostate cancer screenings. We hope women will get involved too. Women can’t grow mustaches, but they can encourage the men. Women are very important because they are the ones who often insist that the men in their lives see their doctors.” For more information about the Movember campaign, visit www.facebook.com/ManUPMahoningValley.
