Basket raffle to benefit local animal shelters

Girl Empowerment Mentorship Program visits Macy’s

T he Gi rl E mpower ment Mentorship program at Boardman took a field trip to Macy’s on Nov. 5.

The program was run by Mary Dulay, a Macy’s employee, who said that the goal of the trip is to encourage the girls to live healthy individual lives.

“We are doing a fashion presentation showing them what the in styles are and showing them how to create their own style,” Dulay said.

She also explained that Clinique did a presentation on healthy skin care for the girls, and gave away free samples.

“T hey a re ta l k i ng about healthy skin care, they are going to talk about fashion trends with the girls, and are just giving them that added support,” said Linda Frease, the counselor at Boardman Center.

Frease runs the Girls Empowerment Mentorship program, which is funded through the United Way. She said that the program has been going on for five years, and this is the second year the group has traveled to Macy’s for a field trip.

when its Monday because they know their mentors coming and they have a relationship with someone,” Frease said.

The group is made up of 15 community women who volunteer as mentors for the year.

Tweny-one girls are chosen to be part of the program by Boardman school officials as a way to offer them extra support.

Mentors meet with the students once a week every Monday and participate in various activities and lessons.

The group also takes field trips throughout the year.

“This program has been awe-

some for the girls because it allows them support and freedom that they may never have until this,” Frease said.

The group will visit the Butler Art Museum in January and go to a Miracle on Easy Street production in December, along with other trips.

Junior Achievement representatives will also visit and do a lesson about money skills and choosing a career.

“We are really big at Boardma n center about f i nd i ng where kids need extra support and hooking them up w ith that,” Frease said. “We look at this program as a way to give

extra support for the students.”

Kathy Mock, the Director of Education and Initiatives at the United Way, said that the United Way has supported the program for five years because they see it as an important aspect to community engagement.

“It allows these girls some support, in a way they may never receive in their lives, it offers them a person they know they can trust,” Mock said.

Six Boardman High School students were chosen as winners in Youngstown’s annual Non-Violence Week poster competition.

Jenna Hudock, an art teacher at Boardman High School, instructed the students who entered the competition.

“One of the benefits of taking an art class is the opportunity for complex visual problem solving, as well as an opportunity to communicate visually through creative endeavors,” Hudock said.

Hudock gave entry into the competition as an assignment for her Graphics 1 class where

students use Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.

She said that for the competition students individually contemplated the theme, which was “non-violence.”

“Students first brainstormed, then sketched out ideas, they worked on their design for about two weeks with teacher feedback being ongoing,” Hudock said.

The finished artwork created through the Adobe programs was printed on an Epson Stylus Pro printer before being submitted to the competition.

Students who won included sophomore Jenna Hughes, who won first place and a $50 prize, Fatima Rehman in second place and third place to Migel

Santiago.

Tyler Williams, Emily Olexa and Andrew Gibson also received honorable mentions.

Additional to cash prizes winners were put on display at the Soap Gallery in downtown Youngstown.

They were also treated to an honorary reception on Oct. 11 at SMARTS in Youngstown.

Hudock said this is the first time since working at Boardman High School that she has had students enter the competition, but that in 2016 she taught a student at the Boardman Intermediate School who won.

The competition was open to any student in elementary, intermediate and high school in Mahoning Valley.

Main library hosts annual Literary Society Fundraiser

“This is the Literary Society’s main fundraiser every year,” said Janet Loew, the library’s spokes person.

Tickets were $65 and included admission into the event, a cocktail and appetizer reception and a signed copy of one of the authors books.

“One hundred and fifty people at a major library is very impressive it says a lot about the appeal of the Youngstown library,” Gardner said.

She sa id t hat she enjoys spending time at library events such as this because she, as many authors are, is indebted to her local library for helping her start her career.

“For me, probably the biggest thing I would say is that my brother and I grew up in a small dairy community and our library was like a portal to another world,” Gardner said.

When Gardner decided she wanted to write her first novel at 18, her first stop was her local library.

These days she attends class-

es at her local New Hampshire library, her favorite of which is origami.

“A library is becoming our biggest delivery of social services,” Gardner said. “There are large parts of the United States where the library is serving the homeless population.

I think the need for libraries is greater than ever but the roles are shifting.”

Gardner has written more than 30 books during her career, which stemmed from her interest in true crime and her passion for understanding the human psyche.

“I do a lot of research with law enforcement,” Gardner said. “I follow a lot of true crime and cases in the news and generally things are just sticking in the back of my mind.”

She said her process usually begins by hearing interesting stories in the news that grasp her attention, and then researching the stories and discussing them with law enforcement to see what the reality behind the situation would be.

One example is the story of Amy Bishop, the only female mass murder. In her early life Bishop was found to have accidently shot her brother to death, and then later become the only woman to commit a

violent shooting.

It was this information that interested Gardner, who researched the story for her novel “Never Tell.”

“Its the psychology behind true crime,” Gardner said.

“These things are all just so complicated, things that happen in the real world that grab my attention.”

Gardner spoke at the event about her novel “Look For Me” a story inspired by the recent trend of entire families turning up murdered, with their teenage daughter missing.

“Its interesting because half the time she murders them, and half the time the family is murdered to abduct her,” Gardner said.

Her advice to young writers is to read constantly and to continue to write until you have a full book.

“If you do that it doesn’t matter how terrible it is you actually are a novelist you have completed a book,” Gardner said.

“You can talk about work that’s done, you can’t talk about a blank page.”

She said that writers block is just a myth, and should be looked at as an excuse to tackle the problem in a new way.

“If you wrote a page a day, you would have a book at the end of the year.” Gardner said.

“As long as you can see one next thing, just keep on trucking.”

“It’s great to be different; this book celebrates that,” said Laura Demetrios, Diane’s daughter-in-law who attended the events with her.

Leslie is named after Diane’s daughter who died of a drug overdose in 2013 at 31.

Diane said that she attributed her death partially to Leslie being bullied while she was young.

Diane a lso included t he names of her grandchildren in the story, who attended the events along with their mother Laura and assisted with the reading.

Over a two-week period Laura and Diane traveled to local schools, including Austintown Elementary School, Poland Union Elementary and Boardman elementary schools, including Market Street and Stadium Drive.

“It’s a great program we have had coming here for ma ny yea rs,” sa id Pola nd Union principal Mike Masucci. “The Demetrios’ are Poland natives so its great to have them back for this important program.”

Laura and Diane gathered second-graders into groups to read the book aloud.

Periodically throughout the reading they would ask students if they have ever experienced what Leslie has.

positive thinking, that being different is not only okay but it should be celebrated,” Laura said.

After the reading, time allotting, the second-graders would then participate in a group activity where they would write down and share what makes them special.

Children would list various traits including “smart,” “artistic,” and “kind.”

“It’s so encouraging to watch children positively discuss themselves and their friends,” Diane said. “It’s why these programs are so important.”

Diane also donated copies of the books to the students, allowing each one to take a copy home to share with their fami-

lies. “‘Listen to Leslie’ is one of our larger anti-bullying events at AES,” Brittany Bueno, the community engagement specialist at the Austintown schools.

The reading is part of a larger program called “Lets Make a Difference” that Demetrios has been involved in for the last five years.

“We want to encourage positive speech and do what we can to help students learn how to take a stand against bullying,” Laura said.

“Listen to Leslie” is now available in 14 public libraries according to Diane.

“The book and the program only continue to grow,” Diane said. ”It’s incredible.”

Bowers, 20, of Notre Dame Drive, Campbell, were charged in the theft of merchandise from the J.C. Penney store in Southern Park Mall. Bowers faced additional charges of resisting arrest and obstructing official business when, police alleged, she ignored their commands by walking away, then struggled briefly with them.

Drug paraphernalia: While conducting an investigation in the 3900 block of South Avenue, officers charged Michelle L. Weikart, 50, of Georgetown Road, Salem, with having two suspected crack-cocaine pipes.

Nov. 4 Aggravated menacing: A Maple Avenue man alleged a former friend with whom he communicated on an online dating service threatened to crush his skull as the conversation became more heated.

Theft: A man in his 50s reportedly fled in a white Chevrolet Cobalt after having stolen about $450 worth of men’s merchandise from the JCPenney store.

Theft: Stefan Breedlove, 58, of Donald Avenue, Youngstown, was charged with theft and possessing drug paraphernalia after $238 worth of clothing and hygiene products was taken from Walmart. Also, a suspected crackcocaine pipe was found in a cigarette pack, a report showed.

Theft: A 17-year-old Youngstown girl was accused of stealing $375 worth of merchandise from Walmart.

Trespassing: Authorities filed a criminaltrespassing charge against Jeffrey L. Long, 52, of Market Street, Boardman, after having received a complaint that Long was in a McDonald’s restaurant, 22 Boardman-Canfield Road, in violation of a recent trespassing warning against him.

Theft: Police charged Darrelle A. McMinn of McFarland Avenue, Youngstown, after alleging McMinn, 26, had intentionally neglected to self-scan $100 worth of items while in Walmart.

Theft: Michael M. Watkins, 61, of Evergreen Avenue, Youngstown, and Sylvia R. Rogers, 53, of Cassius Avenue, Youngstown, were charged with theft and complicity to theft, respectively, after a wristwatch and other items were stolen from Walmart.

Nov. 5 Arrest: A traffic stop on South Avenue resulted in Reiko L. McCann’s arrest. McCann, 39, of Midland Avenue, Youngstown, was wanted on two warrants charging her with a probation violation and one count of domestic violence.

Auto theft: A 2006 Ford Explorer was stolen in the 300 block of Mathews Road.

Theft by deception: A vehicle check near U.S. Route 224 resulted in the arrest of Garrett T. McCullough, 37, of West Calla Road, Canfield, who was wanted on a felony theft-bydeception charge. A woman who hired McCullough, who owns a construction business, last month to make roof and other repairs to her Annawan Lane home told police she paid $2,840 for the work, but that no one showed up to do the job.

Theft: Austintown police transferred custody of Tammi E. Anderson, 57, to Boardman authorities. Anderson, of Westmont Drive, Austintown, faced a felony-theft charge, accused of stealing $1,541 worth of merchandise Oct. 26 from the JCPenney store.

Aggravated menacing: A Sugartree Drive man told police his son received threatening correspondence on Snapchat that included an attached photograph showing a shotgun, a crossbow and knives on a bed.

Assault: A New Waterford woman alleged a client with a Yellow Creek Drive group home struck her and another caretaker after having become upset because a TV remote-control device didn’t work.

Fraud: A manager with Boardman Subaru, 7811 South Ave., told authorities that after finalizing a contract with a customer to buy a car for $26,895, the potential buyer wrote a check that was later returned for nonsufficient funds.

Theft: A woman reported her daughter’s iPhone and purse stolen while the girl attended a drama practice at Boardman High School.

Theft: Youngstown police handed to township authorities Nesheka A. Parker, 38, of Wabash Avenue, Youngstown, who was charged with stealing $100 worth of children’s outfits Sept.

Nov. 6 Attempted burglary: Someone reportedly tried to force open a rear door to an apartment in the 3900 block of South Schenley Avenue and broke a window pane.

Breaking and entering: After receiving information that three males were breaking into Dollar General, 859 E. Midlothian Blvd., police charged a 16-year-old Youngstown boy with breaking and entering, vandalism, possessing criminal tools and receiving stolen property.

Video surveillance showed one of the suspects using a hammer in an effort to break a window before successfully breaking another one, then entering the discount store, jumping over a counter and filling backpacks with numerous packs of cigars, a report stated.

Domestic violence: A 15-year-old Boardman girl was charged with the crime after her mother alleged that during an argument about a cellphone call, the teen pushed and shoved her backward, then kicked the accuser two or three times in the stomach and bit her right arm.

Drugs: Kimberly A. Raymond, 48, of Argyle Avenue, Boardman, faced a drug-abuse charge after a family member reportedly became concerned after seeing 12 loose prescription pills in her purse.

Theft: A $700 touch-screen radio system was removed from a vehicle in the 7800 block of South Avenue.

Theft: Authorities charged Lydell A. Womack, 62, after alleging Womack, of Megan Circle, Youngstown, stole $310 worth of food and drinks from Walmart.

Fraud: A manager with Heritage Union Title Co. Ltd., 7178 West Blvd., discovered 19 checks, later shown to be fraudulent, were written for a total of more than $40,000 and drawn on a business account.

Theft: A man noticed 20 pairs of shoes and 12 jerseys missing from his Carter Circle apartment, resulting in a $3,520 loss.

Theft: Officers were dispatched to Boardman Area Court on Market Street to book Arquwonna K. Wright of East Lucius Avenue, Youngstown, who faced a theft charge.

Wright, 25, was accused of stealing $49 worth of property Sept. 9, 2017, from Walmart.

Nov. 2 Arrest: While investigating a report of a vehicle that had been stolen at Southern Park Mall, authorities at Shops at Boardman Park took Trey D. Blackmon, 25, into custody. Blackmon, who listed addresses on Arlene Avenue in Boardman and Roslyn Avenue in Youngstown, was wanted on a felony probation-violation charge.

Theft: James E. Allen, 37, of West Judson Avenue, Youngstown, surrendered on a theft charge after being accused of intentionally failing to self-scan $38 worth of food and other items while in Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Identity fraud: The owner of DIY Transport Inc., 860 Boardman-Canfield Road, reportedly learned that his name and that of the business were used without authorization on a fraudulent bill of reference regarding transporting a load of cars.

Theft: Nathan R. Boale and Casey E. Colla, both 37 and of Westchester Drive, Austintown, were charged with stealing 13 articles of clothing valued at $257 from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road. Colla also was wanted on a bench warrant accusing her of failing to appear in Boardman Area Court on a theft charge.

Recovered property: A 2005 Ford vehicle was recovered during a roll-over crash at Southern Park Mall after the car had been reported stolen in Warren.

Theft: The owner of a South Cadillac Drive business alleged a former worker has failed to return several company-owned items that included a laptop computer, an iPhone and an iPad. Menacing: A Tam-o-Shanter Drive man told police a man with whom he was in a heated argument charged toward the accuser, then threatened to harm him.

Recovered property: A Ewing Road woman reportedly found her 2012 Hyundai Sonata, which sustained passenger-side damage, after alleging her child’s father had taken it without permission.

Misuse of a credit card: Candace L. Lipjanic, 50, of Red Tail Hawk Drive, Boardman, surrendered on a misdemeanor count of misuse of a credit card after a Sept. 19 situation in which her former boyfriend, of Paxton Road, alleged Lipjanic had used his credit card to make $761 worth of unauthorized charges.

After the officers teach the children various lessons in safety, including being sure to have a meeting point and to always change the battery in the fire alarm, they go through a fire safety simulation.

Children are brought into the ‘bedroom’ area of the smoke house and the room is filled with smoke.

Officers then help children climb out the window and find their meeting spot with the rest of the class.

“The schools have helped a lot with it. Its more or less about trying to get them understand at home as well,” Yocum said.

quired to do more fire drills a year than average.

For this reason the fire department works very closely with the schools, attending all of their fire drills and even pulling surprise drills at least once a year.

“Its something we do every year, its not to say they are doing anything wrong its to see what we can do to make it better,” Yocum said. “Kids seem to know what to do, sometimes it catches teachers by surprise.”

The department works with school resource officers and other contacts within the school to be sure not to interrupt state testing or other important school activities, but is always sure to take teachers and students by surprise.

“They have a good understanding of what to do, we just make sure to keep them on their toes,” Yocum said.

Happily Ever After The Morells to celebrate anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Morell of Struthers recently marked their 50th wedding anniversary. A celebration of the event is being planned for later this year.

The couple’s children are Michael (Dina) Morell of San Francisco, Calif.; Gino (Susan) Morell and Angela (Michael) Flak all of Canfield; and Gina (Bobby) Domico of Poland. Ten grandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Morell married the former Mary Ann Duronio at St. Luke Church in Boardman on Sept. 14, 1968.

Mrs. Morell was a branch adviser and consultant for Longaberger Baskets until she retired in 2013. She is a member of the Struthers Rotary and served as president of the chapter in 1993.

Her husband was an equipment concentration manager for the Department of Defense until he retired in 2003. He is a member of the Reserve Officers Association, Mahoning Sportsman

Club, and Amvets Post No. 44. Mr. Morell served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966 on active duty and served in the Army Reserves from 1966 through 1994.

The couple are members of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Boardman.

Five grandchildren, Jessica, Stephen, John and Ella Sheridan of Frederick, and Michael Sheridan of Boardman, complete their family.

Mr. Sheridan and the former Leola “Lee” Bernard were married Aug. 29, 1953, at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown.

Lauren Elizabeth Zajac and David Matthew Koval were united in marriage June 30 during a ceremony officiated by the Rev. Bede Kotlinski at St. John Cantius Church in Cleveland. The reception took place that evening in the ballroom at the Ritz-Carlton.

The bride is the daughter of Deborah Zajac of Poland and the late Eugene Zajac.

Dr. John and Maureen Koval of Poland are the parents of the groom.

Natalie Zajac, sister of the bride, was the maid of honor. The bride’s niece, Kendall Zajac, was the flower girl.

John and Kevin Koval, brothers of the groom, shared the responsibilities of best man, and her brother Eric Zajac was the groomsman.

Mrs. Koval graduated from Kent State University with a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising and is director of merchandising and design for the girl’s division at Skechers.

Mr. Koval graduated from Miami University with a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s degree in accountancy. He is a senior audit manager for Grant Thornton LLP. The couple honeymooned in Hawaii and reside in Southern California.
