Chili cook off The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting its annual Ray Dudik Memorial Chili Cook-off on Nov. 28. This indoor event will be before and during the Ohio State against Michigan college football game. The public is invited to this event in the club’s indoor hall at 1735 W. South Range Road (Route #165) in North Lima. There will be door prizes, food (Chili recipes for the tasting and judging), refreshments, fun and of course the best football rivalry in the country - OSU vs. UM. Learn to improve water quality on Nov. 24 Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to learn how to improve water quality. Stephanie Dyer, Environmental Program Manager with Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, will help you understand how to become responsible water quality stewards. This program will take place

High Tea fundraiser to be Nov. 22 The Victorian Players invite the public to attend a Victorian High-Tea fundraiser on Nov. 22, 2-5 p.m., at the Piccadilly Parlour, 114 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Proceeds from this fundraiser will support their handicap accessibility project. The luncheon will be served beginning at 2:30 p.m. and will consist of a cup of soup, tea sandwiches, delightful sweets and tea or coffee.

Entertainment will be provided by Darlene MacBenn on the harp, and Trudy Mason, who will portray Molly Brown, of “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” fame. There will be a silent auction, a Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle, all proceeds going to the handicap accessibility project. Door prizes will be awarded. Victorian dress is encouraged but not necessary. Reservations are required. The cost is $25 per person, $10 of which is tax deductible. Austintown Fitch hosts Veterans Day Assembly On Nov. 11, Austintown Fitch hosted its annual Veterans Day Assembly. The assembly honored American Veterans as well as the military veterans of the school faculty, administration, custodial staff and Board of Education. Following the assembly there was a Dedication Ceremony for the newly built Veterans Memorial outside the entrance of Austintown Fitch High School.

Seth Welch, a Fitch sophomore, constructed this life-size memorial in order to earn his Eagle Scout badge. Many people pitched in to help Welch, including students, faculty and community members. He was able to gather all of the materials necessary for the project through donation.

Second annual Polar Run to be Nov. 28 On Nov. 28 at Greenwood Falcon Stadium, Austintown Fitch will host its second annual Polar Run. The community run/walk this year will raise funds for Joey Shushok and his family. Shushok was diagnosed with testicular cancer in September and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

The event will start at 6 p.m. and packet pickup will be at 5:30 p.m.

Registration forms can be found on the school website under the “District News” tab. Fused glass ornaments offer holiday flair

People from all around the community attended a fused glass ornament workshop at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Nov. 3.

Lynn Caldwell instructed the class. Caldwell puts on different types of workshops about once a month. She previously taught a pottery workshop during which the attendees made their own mugs.

At the fused glass workshop,

those who attended were able to create three of their own ornaments. Caldwell instructed the participants to start with a large piece of glass, which was supposed to be the tree, then take a few of the smaller cut glass pieces. The smaller pieces would then be glued on top of the large piece using Elmer’s glue.

Dichroic glass, glass that displays two different colors by undergoing a color change in certain lighting conditions, was used for some of the small-

er cut pieces. This glass would give the piece more of an iridescent look.

Once the ornaments were finished being put together, Caldwell would then fuse them over a period of three to four weeks and return them back to the students.

Caldwell explained the different types of fuses she uses to create the final pendant. A tack fuse is used so there is still dimension to the piece. Sometimes a full fuse is used to create a more smooth surface. A

tack fuse would be used to fire these pendants in the kiln.

The workshops bring in regulars as well as newcomers, which Caldwell really enjoys.

“I like to meet new people and see what they create. Ever yone’s work is u n ique,” Caldwell said.

Fellows Riverside Gardens hosts many events for members and non-members to attend. More information on upcoming events can be found on the Mill Creek MetroParks website.

Local church to host turkey dinner fundraiser The Western Reserve United Methodist Church will host a traditional turkey dinner fundraiser on Nov. 21 from 4-5:30 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults, $6 for children ages 5-12 and free for children younger than 5-years-old.

Funds raised from this event will go toward getting a prosthetic leg for a 12-year-old child.

‘Disney Live!’s’ Belle makes library appearance

Area children and parents from throughout Mahoning County traveled to Poland on Oct. 29 to meet a live Disney character at the Disney Meet and Greet Storytime.

According to Janet Loew, the Public Relations Director for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, every time the Disney Live! Three Classic Fairy Tales company comes to the Covelli Centre the libraries partner with them in an attempt to bring a little magic to children at the libraries.

The Bistro at MCCTC open to the public Student-operated restaurant, The Bistro at Mahoning County Career Technical Center, is open for lunch hours to the public beginning Nov. 11. The Bistro will be open TuesdaysThursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for dine-in or carry out through the winter. The Bistro is run by students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. YWCA of Youngstown receives grant from Second Harvest Food Bank YWCA of Youngstown received a $6,500 Ohio Benefit Bank Tax Assistance Capacity Building Grant from Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. The grant will allow the YWCA to continue assisting members of the community with free filing of income tax returns and other benefits.

In 2015, the YWCA has assisted 146 clients through the Ohio Benefit Bank.

On Oct. 15, students from high schools across Mahoning and Trumbull counties took part in a financial education program in conjunction with Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley, Inc., Cortland Banks, Home Savings & Loan Company and other community volunteers. This year’s “Get Smart about Credit Day” featured the pre-developed JA Personal Finance lesson, “Credit Choices.” This is the sixth year for this one-day program that will educate 415 students about how important credit is and how to use it wisely.

This program will help students develop a stronger understanding of credit and how to use it responsibly. Lessons include not only how to manage a credit card, but also how to protect personal financial information and recognize the signs of overspending. These are all need-to-know facts for anyone using credit for the first time – whether in the form of a credit card, student loan or car loan. The hands-on Junior Achievement lessons keep the students engaged. For one of

the activities student groups each receive a set of facts on a different credit-related topic and must summarize the key points on t he corresponding graphic novel panel. Each group then presents its topic and panel to the class.

Participating high schools include Austintown Fitch, Boardman, Canfield, Liberty, Mahoning County Career & Technical Center and Struthers.

The couple took a wedding trip to Cozumel, Mexico, and have made their home in Conneaut.

She is the daughter of Paul and Karen Kalosky of Canfield. Mr. Mullins is the son of Tammy and Rex Lillie of Conneaut and Coy and Cathy Mullins of Polk City, Fla. Mrs. Mullins wore an A-line gown with a chapel-length train embellished with crystals and lace and accented by a champagne-colored sash adorned with flowers and jewels.

The bride’s sister, Jenna Kalosky, was maid of honor. Amber Orning, Toni Raisian, Lacey Walsh and flower girl Charlotte Lindgren, the bride’s cousin, wore celadon-green dresses.

Nicholas Schulte performed duties of best man. Groomsmen were David Clark, Michael Rowbotham and the groom’s brother, Chris Preston. Kaleb Clark was ring bearer. Ushers were A.J. Mallory, the groom’s cousin, and Randy Coffman.

The bride earned a bachelor’s degree

from Youngstown State University and a master’s degree from Kent State University, both in music education. She is the choir director at Conneaut Area City Schools.

The couple work at the Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Virginia Beach, where she is a training and operations specialist and he is a senior medical officer.

The couple took a wedding trip to Hawaii, and live in Virginia Beach.

Spagnolas celebrate 60 years together Mr. and Mrs. John Spagnola of Poland celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary during a celebration at Bogey’s Riverside Banquet Center in Lowellville. Invitations were extended by the hosts.

The former Phyllis Lewis and Mr. Spagnola exchanged marriage vows Oct. 22, 1955, in Immaculate Conception Church in Youngstown. They are members of St. Dominic Church in Youngstown.

Mrs. Spagnola is a homemaker.

Mr. Spagnola retired from Sears Roebuck and Co., where he was an associate manager. He served four years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Hornet.

The couple are parents of Cynthia (Mark) Long and Patricia Craft, all of Poland; Joanne (Ron) Fisher of Struthers; and Diane Spangola of Canfield. The family circle includes seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The bride is the daughter of Thomas Swierz of Poland and Karen (Glova) Swierz of Struthers. The groom is the son of Mike and Lori Margevicius of North Royalton, Ohio.

The bride wore a gown with a trumpet silhouette and sweetheart neckline, decorated in primrose lace and edged in French Chantilly lace. She changed into a blush and champagne-colored draped linen and cotton ball gown with a layered skirt and lace bodice for the reception.

The bride has changed her legal name to Rebecca Swierz Margevicius.

The groom’s sister, Allison Margevicius, was honor attendant. Bridesmaids were the bride’s sisters, Cheryl and Christina Swierz, and Maddie Sofia, Kara Cocco and Alex DiLuciano. The attendants wore pale pink dresses.

Randall Kibler performed duties of best man. Groomsmen were Dan Margevicius, the groom’s cousin; Tom Margevicius,

The bride and groom both earned doctorates of pharmacy from the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy. She is a pharmacy clinical specialist at Southwest General in Middleburg Heights, Ohio, and he is a pharmacist and anticoagulation supervisor at Veterans Affairs in Cleveland.

The couple took an eastern Caribbean cruise for a wedding trip and live in Lakewood.

The children tried guessing what the animal at the end of the book would be by seeing what shapes it was made out of. The animal turned out to be a dinosaur, which is what many children guessed it would be.

Songs and stories teach shapes and colors

Austintown librarian, Miss Ashley, led Pre-Kindergarten Storytime on Nov. 4. This theme of this storytime was all about colors and shapes.

The children started out the morning with the opening song called “Can’t Wait to Celebrate!” from Jim Gill’s CD “Irrational Anthem.” After the opening song was done, Miss Ashley got the children to engage in an activity that iden-

tified shapes while singing a song called, “Where is Triangle, Where is Triangle?”

The songs and activities of the event were designed for the children to work on their readiness skills. These skills allow children to recognize patterns, identify certain objects - like shapes and colors - and help them classify objects by different features.

The first book, “Shape by Shape” by Suse MacDonald, introduced the children to different shapes that were put togeth-

er to form a dinosaur at the end.

The children enjoyed guessing throughout the story what animal the shapes would create.

“Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes” by Eric Litwin was the final book that was read. In this story, Pete the Cat had white shoes that changed colors depending what he stepped in.

Each item Pete stepped in allowed the children to guess what color the shoes would turn.

Miss Ashley ended storytime with the song “If You’re Happy

and You Know It.” The children ended the storytime by working on their gumball machine craft. A gumball machine was printed on paper with different colored gumballs inside. It was the children’s job to match different colored pompoms to the correct color inside the gumball machine.

The pre-kindergeraten events at the Austintown library give children an opportunity to advance their skills before they start school.

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) system will be closed for Thanksgiving on Nov. 26.

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the YoungstownWarren area. A Gamblers Anonymous meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Cornersburg. Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about one and a half hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
