The Boardman Middle Schools proudly present two holiday band concerts on Dec. 10 and 11. The Friends of Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will be doing gift wrapping at the Boardman Barnes and Noble throughout the day on Dec. 4. There will be a special “Polar Express” story time that evening. Purchases made at Barnes and Noble that day will benefit the Friends of the PLYMC. Dealing with stress through mindfulness Learn what causes stress, what you can do to reduce it, how mindfulness plays into the equation and simple exercises to do at work or at home at the Boardman library at 6 p.m. on Dec. 17. Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Julie Lenyk will demonstrate how mindfulness and simple techniques like breathing can start to reduce the stress and strain of the holiday season. This event is co-sponsored by Meridian Healthcare. Reservations are needed. This event is for adults.

At the end of storytime, the children were able to create their own cat and dog crafts out of paper. Crayons were used to color the paper in whatever way the children wanted. Miss Saunders and the caregivers would then help the children fold the paper into the cats and dogs.

Children ages 2 and 3 came to the Boardman library on Nov. 4 to participate in Baby Brilliant: Tales and Talk for 2s and 3. This event is designed to help the children’s reading skills. This week librarian, Karen Saunders, made the focus of the event all about dogs. She read books about dogs and the children even got to make their own dog craft after story time. The children sat behind the

story snakes and played along with the introductory song. Saunders started out the morning by singing the song “Clap, Clap, Clap Your Hands.” After the song ended, she began to read the first book, “Dog In, Cat Out,” by Gillian Rubinstein and Ann James. During the story, the children were able to interact with the plot by passing around a stuffed dog and cat. The other stories read were “Ten Silly Dogs” by Lisa Flather and “Bark, George” by Jules Feiffer.

Shakers were passed around for the children to use while singing the song “B-I-N-G-O.” The children enjoyed being hands on with all of the activities that Saunders had prepared for the event. “The kids are so enthusiastic. These story time activities help the children build literacy while having fun,” Saunders said. The construction that happening at the Boardman library put a little halt on some of the activities, but now that the events are happening again,

the children and their caregivers are happy to be back. Karen Becker brought Addison to participate in the event. “It’s been awhile since we could come because of the construction, but Addison really enjoys going. She was excited to come today,” said Becker. Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s is a weekly event at the Boardman library. Families enjoy coming and being able to spend time with each other while their children have the chance to make friends with other children.

Doctor Who and Sherlock program – WhoLock Calling all Whovians and Sherlockians! Come celebrate Christmas like a “Doctor” at the Poland library at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 17 - make sure your holidays are “Sherlocked.” This program is for anyone who has ever wanted to visit 221B Baker Street or take a ride in the TARDIS. There will be themed crafts, activities, games and prizes. This event is for teens and adults only.

YWCA receives grant from Second Harvest YWCA of Youngstown received a $6,500 Ohio Benefit Bank Tax Assistance Capacity Building Grant from Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. The grant will allow the YWCA to continue assisting members of the community with free filing of income tax returns and other benefits. In 2015, the YWCA has assisted 146 clients through the Ohio Benefit Bank.

On Oct. 15, students from area high schools took part in a financial education program in conjunction with Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley, Inc., Cortland Banks, Home Savings & Loan Company and other community volunteers.

Junior Achievement teaches credit and financial responsibility On Oct. 15, students from high schools across Mahoning and Trumbull counties took part in a financial education program in conjunction with Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley, Inc., Cortland Banks, Home Savings & Loan Company and other community volunteers. This year’s “Get Smart about Credit Day” featured the predeveloped JA Personal Finance lesson, “Credit Choices.” This is the sixth year for this oneday program that will educate 415 students about how important credit is and how to use it wisely. This program will help students develop a stronger understanding of credit and how to use it responsibly. Lessons include not only how to man-

age a credit card, but also how to protect personal financial information and recognize the signs of overspending. These are all need-to-know facts for anyone using credit for the first time – whether in the form of a credit card, student loan or car loan. The hands-on Junior Achievement lessons keep the students engaged. For one of the activities student groups each receive a set of facts on a different credit-related topic and must summarize the key points on the corresponding graphic novel panel. Each group then presents its topic and panel to the class. Participating high schools include Austintown Fitch, Boardman, Canfield, Liberty, Mahoning County Career & Technical

Center and Struthers. clay, a high-fire clay, with various natural-looking designs. Because of the high-fire clay, the finished products were durable, food safe and dishwasher safe, Cardwell said. She educated her class about various types of clay, noting which one was best fitting for each type of creation. Cardwell, a former Youngstown State University art

The Bistro at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center open to the public Student-operated restaurant, The Bistro at Mahoning County Career Technical Center, is open for lunch hours to the public. The Bistro will be open Tuesdays-Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for dine-in or carry out through the winter. The Bistro is run by students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. This

gives students the chance to gain experience in all facets of working in the restaurant industry, from working as kitchen staff, line cooks and the Sous Chef to waiting tables and hosting. The Bistro schedule is as follows: Dec. 1-3, 8-10; Jan. 5-7, 13, 14, 20, 21. The restaurant will also be open in February and March with dates being announced soon. Area children and parents from throughout Mahoning County traveled to Poland on Oct. 29 to meet a live Disney character at the Disney Meet and Greet Storytime. According to Janet Loew, the Public Relations Director for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning

County, every time the Disney Live! Three Classic Fairy Tales company comes to the Covelli Centre the libraries partner with them in an attempt to bring a little magic to children at the libraries. “Every year that the Disney Live! company comes to the Covelli Centre, we try to get a Disney character to come to the library,” Loew said. “They really have been most wonderful in

working with us to achieve that goal.” Loew went on to say that the character visits have an added benefit for the children they meet. “This event has a literary aspect, as well. It brings the books to life. It really does,” Loew said. Deborah Liptak, Developmental Director for the Public

Instructor Lynn Caldwell explained how the fused glass ornaments would be made using various shards of glass. Caldwell used a tack fuse for this project so there was dimension to the piece.

People from all around the community attended a fused glass ornament workshop at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Nov. 3. Lynn Caldwell instructed the class. Caldwell puts on different types of workshops about once a month. She previously taught a pottery workshop during which the attendees made their own mugs. At the fused glass workshop,

those who attended were able to create three of their own ornaments. Caldwell instructed the participants to start with a large piece of glass, which was supposed to be the tree, then take a few of the smaller cut glass pieces. The smaller pieces would then be glued on top of the large piece using Elmer’s glue. Dichroic glass, glass that displays two different colors by undergoing a color change in certain lighting conditions, was used for some of the small-

er cut pieces. This glass would give the piece more of an iridescent look. Once the ornaments were finished being put together, Caldwell would then fuse them over a period of three to four weeks and return them back to the students. Caldwell explained the different types of fuses she uses to create the final pendant. A tack fuse is used so there is still dimension to the piece. Sometimes a full fuse is used to create a more smooth surface. A

tack fuse would be used to fire these pendants in the kiln. The workshops bring in regulars as well as newcomers, which Caldwell really enjoys. “I like to meet new people and see what they create. Ever yone’s work is u n ique,” Caldwell said. Fellows Riverside Gardens hosts many events for members and non-members to attend.
