Canfield students stepped out to stop diabetes at the Canfield Fairgrounds for the American Diabetes Association Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes Oct. 17. For their National Honor Society senior service project, Canfield High School seniors Alec Kan and Mason Mangapora worked with Erin Angelo, Canfield High School teacher, to coordinate Canfield’s
team and involvement. Kan, Mangapora and the Canfield team collected monetary donations for The American Diabetes Association and recruited members of National Honor Society to act as route directors to cheer on walkers. The Canfield High School Cardinal Pride Drumline performed before the walk and then led the way around the fairgrounds for the walk participants. Several teams participated in the walk,
with many showing their support with team t-shirts. The Red Striders team was made up of children and adults who have type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes. Team Dylan supported Red Strider Dylan Roby, the 2015 Red Strider ambassador. “I would like to thank everyone for coming out today and for your support. I want everyone with diabetes to know that you are not alone in this fight. Everyone here today is proof of that,” Roby said.

Making stoneware mugs at Fellows Riverside Gardens By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
On Oc t . 13, M i l l C re ek MetroParks craft class instructor Lynn Cardwell hosted yet another popular creative class, Nature-Inspired Stoneware Mugs, at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Attendees had the opportunity to craft mugs out of stoneware clay, a high-fire clay, with various natural-looking designs. Because of the high-fire clay, the finished products were durable, food safe and dishwasher safe, Cardwell said. She educated her class about various types of clay, noting

Cardwell instructs numerous classes at Fellows Riverside Gardens, her favorite aspect is being social. “I like interacting with people and seeing how excited they get when they make something — like, ‘Oh, I can’t believe I made (Conveniently Located 1/2 mile South of Western Reserve Rd.) this,’” Cardwell said. “It’s a nice interaction.”

Cardinal Joint Fire District visits Hilltop Elementary By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
To celebrate Fire Safety Week, students at Hilltop Elementary School received a visit from members of the Cardinal Joint Fire District Oct. 9. The firemen presented fire safety tips to students by performing a Fire Safety Quiz Show for each grade level. A group of students were chosen from each class and Deput y Chief Matt Rarick asked the four teams questions ‘game show style’ and the students had to buzz in first to answer the questions. To help the younger students, a member of the Cardinal Joint Fire District
joined each team. “Good morning, everyone. I’m Deputy Chief Matt Rarick. We are going to play a game and I’m going to ask you some simple fire safety questions today. Just buzz in when you know the answer,” Rarick told the students. Rarick asked the students, such questions as, “After leaving your house because of a fire, where do you go?” and “When you hear the smoke detector beep, what should you do?” After several questions and lots of cheering, a winning class was declared, which received glow in the dark bracelets. All other students received hats, stickers and coloring books
compliments of the fire department. After the Fire Safety Quiz Show, the firefighters invited the children outside to check out the fire truck parked in front of the school. Firefighter Ron Hinderliter showed and explained the truck’s equipment to the students. Firefighter Dominic Reinthaler thrilled the students when he buckled himself in with a firefighter’s belt and climbed the fully extended ladder on the truck. Members of the Cardinal Joint Fire District also visited C.H. Campbell Elementary School with their Fire Safety Quiz Show during Fire Safety Week.

The Canfield Cardinals freshman football team celebrated its undefeated season. The team clenched the win by defeating Poland with a score of 2814.
Canfield freshmen finish undefeated The Canfield freshman football team defeated Poland 2814 on a rain soaked Bob Dove Field to finish the season undefeated. Canfield overcame two holding penalties on their opening possession, one of which nullified a 60-yard Colin Hritz touchdown run, to take a 6-0 lead. Canfield faced a third and 22 following the back to back infractions when Hritz raced 25-yards around left end for a first down at the Poland 45. Two plays later, quarterback Glenn Griswold sprinted 43-yards to paydirt behind a key block from Cole Morrell. Canfield struck again midway through the second quarter when Hritz burst through the left side of the Bulldog defense from 21-yards out for the 6 pointer and a 12-0 halftime lead. Playing through a driving rain in the third quarter Canfield extended their lead to 20-0 when Hritz took a jet sweep and dashed 62-yards for the touchdown. Griswold hit a leaping Morrell for the 2 point conversion. Poland drove deep into Cardinal territory on their next pos-
session but the drive was halted when Max Dawson picked off a Poland pass attempt. Poland finally avoided the shutout when they scored with the just under 7 minutes to play to make it 20-6. The Cardinals ended any comeback hopes on the next possession driving 60-yards in six plays for the clinching score. Griswold hit his fullback Dawson in the right flat and he bolted 40-yards to the Bulldog 7. Griswold called his own number on the next play plowing over a Poland defender for the tally and tacking on the two pointer to make it 28-6. A late Poland score provided the final margin. Defensive standouts for the Cardinals were Vince Giordano, Tyler Stein, PJ Hallof and Jake Whittenberger, while offensively Jarod Tincher, Carter Myers and Jake Donadee were cited for their offensive play. The freshman finished the season 10 and 0 and ran their winning streak to 26 straight, having been unbeaten since the seventh grade. The team is coached by Jim Rousher, Adam Capretta and Jordan Graham.

CHS soccer goes all out for Pink Out By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Canfield High School seniors and varsity soccer players Heather Haley and Jeff Joseph wanted to raise breast cancer awareness for their National Honor Society service projects, so they organized a Pink Out during the girls junior varsity and varsity soccer games against Mentor Lake Catholic on Oct. 15, and the boys junior varsity and varsity soccer games against Hubbard on Oct. 17. Haley and Joseph sold pink Tshirts during high school lunch periods leading up to the Pink Outs and at the Canfield Cardinals varsity football game Oct. 9. Through the Pink Outs, Haley, daughter of Gary and Kim Haley, and Joseph, son of Jeff a nd Denise Joseph, ra ised money for Yellow Brick Place, a cancer wellness center for the tri-county area, and the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center. Yellow Brick Place, founded by President Donna Detwiler and Vice President Anna Aey, provides support to cancer survivors, families and caregivers. The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center delivers accurate prevention, early detection, diagnosis and support
services available in an environment of compassionate and coordinated care. “This has been a great experience for me from something as simple as selling t-shirts. It is a good feeling to be able to make a difference and help people and bring a community together for such a great cause as breast cancer awareness. To see all the people at the game wearing the t-shirts we made is amazing. And all the support we have received has been overwhelming,” Joseph said. Players on both the boys junior varsity and varsity and girls junior varsity and varsity wore donated pink jerseys for their respective games. All junior varsity and varsity players were announced prior to their games and cancer dedications to loved ones were announced for all players. “It is such a great, warm feeling to be able to raise awareness and donate money to raise breast cancer awareness. This disease has affected so many people and knowing we are helping people and helping to possibly find a cure is a great feeling. This has been a heartwarming experience for me,” Haley said. Sponsors and donors included Simon Roofing, the Campa-
na family, The Kidney Group, Titan LED, Jeffrey A. Joseph Co., LPA, PNC Bank, J&M Car Wash, Cortland Banks, Farmer’s Trust, Canfield Soccer Boosters, in memory of Tom Davison, DeAngelo Orthodontics, Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, the Accordino family and Danielle Marie Hodge Scholarship. Huffman Fruit Farm of Salem and Knauf Harvest of Canfield donated pumpkins, which Mar y Ellen Campana then painted to look like pink soccer balls in support of the Pink Out. Along with the pumpkins, Panera pink ribbon bagels, pink cupcakes, made by Campana, and homemade buckeyes were available for purchase. Prior to the girls varsity Pink Out game, Ashlyn Cleevely, Gianna Campana, Heather Haley, Lauren Slanker and Danna Atway, sang the National Anthem. The girls are soccer team members who are also members of the Canfield High School choir. During the game, the ChickFil-A cow mascot from Southern Park Mall was in attendance passing out prizes, and during introductions of the varsity players, FC Canfield youth soccer players were also announced and ran on the field with a varsity player.
The Canfield Cardinals are hosting a fifth- and sixth-grade boys basketball tournament on Dec. 5 and 6, and Dec. 12 and 13 at the Canfield Village Middle School. The tournament is limited to twelve teams per grade level and teams must be school affiliated. The tournament is $125 with a four game guarantee. Contact Judd Rubin through e-mail at judd1310@gmail.com for a registration packet or questions.
Hall of Fame nominations being accepted Canfield High School is now actively seeking nominations for selection to its athletic Hall Of Fame in a ceremony set to take place early next year. For more information and/or nomination forms, contact the Canfield Athletic Department at 330-533-5341 or email gcooper@ canfieldschools.net.
