Poland library lets you color your stress away By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Poland library passed out coloring sheets, colored pencils, crayons and markers during the Color You World event on Nov. 4. Teens and adults came to this event for a chance to relax while coloring and listening to soothing music. To keep in the theme of coloring, colorful snacks were provided. Guests could choose from Skittles, Starbursts and
rainbow M&M cookies, along with lemonade and water to drink. Barb Smith, the librarian supervisor, led the event after having the idea suggested by her sister and niece. She thought it would be a good way for people to relieve stress. “This event is relaxing and a good way to meet people. The library likes to try and have diverse activities for many people to enjoy,” said Smith. One of the videos that Smith
showed the guests was about 3-D coloring. There are now smartphone apps that one can download to use with certain coloring books. When the phone scans over the book the images appear to pop out of the page. Some brands that offer these 3-D coloring options are Popar, Disney, Quiver and Crayola. Smith also tries to make her classes a bit informative. “I try to give everybody a little bit of history, like about crayons and the first coloring book,” she
said. Showing the history of the first coloring supplies gives people an idea of how far the coloring world has come. Art started from first drawing on a flat surface to now being able to use different 3-D art mechanisms. This event is offered once a month at the Poland library. Coloring tools, sheets and snacks will always be provided, but anyone is more than welcome to bring their own supplies.

Celebrate Short Fiction Day Plans for the 2015 “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day are underway. Space is still available for area writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Boardman. “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day is fast approaching, said organizer Nancy Christie. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble Booksellers, in Boardman. More information is available online at http:// tinyurl.com/CSFD2015. “The schedule is filling up quickly, but I still have some slots available for those who want to be part of the event,” said Christie. “Whether they want to read one of their own pieces or a short
story by a favorite author, I’ll be happy to include them on the list. Romance, juvenile, sci-fi, slice-oflife or literary fiction – as long as it’s suitable for the general public, it’s ideal for this year’s ‘Celebrate Short Fiction’ Day event!” Christie, author of Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories (Pixel Hall Press), was inspired to create “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day in 2013, partly because Alice Munro won the Nobel Prize in Literature and “because there are so many really wonderful short story writers out there who I believe are overlooked in favor of novelists,” she explained. “Writing is an act of creation, and whether it takes the form of 100 words or 100,000, it still requires imagination, focus and ability
to bring what does not exist into existence. Just because a piece of fiction can be read in a few pages doesn’t make it any less of a literary achievement.” The event also provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with bookstore patrons, she added. “It’s a winwin for everyone. Writers reach more readers and attendees get to enjoy quality short fiction while taking a much-needed break from the holiday hustle and bustle!” For more information or to register as a participant, contact Christie via email to nancy@ nancychristie.com. More information about “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day is available at http:// tinyurl.com/CelebrateShortFictionDay.

Junior Achievement teaches credit and financial responsibility On Oct. 15, students from high schools across Mahoning and Trumbull counties took part in a financial education program in conjunction with Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley, Inc., Cortland Banks, Home Savings & Loan Company and other community volunteers. This year’s “Get Smart about Credit Day” featured the pre-developed JA Personal Finance lesson, “Credit Choices.” This is the sixth year for this one-day program that will educate 415 students about how important credit is and how to use it wisely. This program will help students develop a stronger understanding of credit and how to use it responsibly. Lessons include not only how to man-
age a credit card, but also how to protect personal financial information and recognize the signs of overspending. These are all need-to-know facts for anyone using credit for the first time – whether in the form of a credit card, student loan or car loan. The hands-on Junior Achievement lessons keep the students engaged. For one of the activities student groups each receive a set of facts on a different credit-related topic and must summarize the key points on the corresponding graphic novel panel. Each group then presents its topic and panel to the class. Participating high schools include Austintown Fitch, Boardman, Canfield, Liberty, Mahoning County Career & Technical
Center and Struthers. This year’s volunteers included Kelly Bietsch, Cortland Banks; Ken English, Edward Jones; Kim Gilbert, Associated School Employees Credit Union; Jim Hughes, Cortland Banks; Bryan Ignazio, Cortland Banks; Kim Lambert, Cortland Banks; Michele Lee, Cortland Banks; Adam Shirey, Cortland Banks; Michelle Tensley, Home Savings; Kim Urig, Community Volunteer; Beth Valerio, Home Savings and Mindy Wiesensee, Cortland Banks. Class makes fused glass ornaments with a holiday flair By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
People from all around the community attended a fused glass ornament workshop at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Nov. 3. Lynn Caldwell instructed the class. Caldwell puts on different types of workshops about once a month. She previously taught a pottery workshop during which the attendees made their own mugs.
At the fused glass workshop, those who attended were able to create three of their own ornaments. Caldwell instructed the participants to start with a large piece of glass, which was supposed to be the tree, then take a few of the smaller cut glass pieces. The smaller pieces would then be glued on top of the large piece using Elmer’s glue. Dichroic glass, glass that displays two different colors by undergoing a color change in

Football coach announces resignation Poland Seminary High School head football coach Mark Brungard announced that he officially tendered his resignation as head football coach to school officials. Coach Brungard has guided the program over the past eleven years to an 88-37 record during his tenure, which was highlighted by nine straight trips to the OHSA A Football playoffs and four league titles. Coach Brungard has also established himself has having the most win’s in the school’s proud history. “I’ve known Mark for the past 10 years, and he has always been a genuine, caring person for the Poland Bulldog program and the community,” said Brian Banfield, Athletic Administrator for the Poland Local Schools.
“I would want Mark to know that he has been a tremendous role model for his players and all scholar-athletes at Poland Seminary High School.” He fulfilled those duties in a manner that would make every Bulldog fan proud. Our best wishes and gratitude are extended to Coach Brungard and his family for their many sacrifices on behalf of the Poland Football Program.” Brungard said that he has enjoyed his 11-year tenure at Poland. “It has been my honor and blessing to coach a game I love at a place I love with people I love. The past 11 years has been a blast for me and my family,” Brungard said. “I have countless people to thank from the com-
munity, the administration, my coaching staff and our supportive parents; Poland is an awesome place to work. But most importantly, I am indebted to the young men I have coached. Without them I wouldn’t be a coach. I have had the privilege to coach some of the greatest young men and leaders our valley has to offer. My primary mission has never been wins or loses, but in seeing boys turn into men that lead in their families, communities, businesses and beyond. With that in mind I feel proud of what we have accomplished here.” The district expects to accept Brungard’s resignation at its board of education meeting on Nov. 23 and then start the process of filling the position.
