International Peace Light comes to Mahoning Valley The International Peace Light will arrive in Youngstown on the evening of Dec. 3 and within the following week it will be distributed. In Mahoning County, it will be available at JMJ Spiritual Connection store, located at 3408 Canfield Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg), beginning on Dec. 4 until Christmas Eve during normal business hours and Camp Stambaugh Scout Shop, located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield, beginning on Dec. 8 until Dec. 22 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12–7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Christie explained that she created “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day to honor the short story in all its forms and lengths.

She encourages libraries and bookstores to host their own “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day events and has provided tip sheets on her web page (http://tinyurl.com/CelebrateShortFictionDay) for those looking for ideas.

Gotta Move story time This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in December at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. C.H. Campbell Elementary School second-graders performed a Veterans Day themed program during the school’s annual Grandparents Day on Nov. 14.

C.H. Campbell Elementary School second-grade students welcomed a group of extremely special visitors to their school Nov. 14.

The students invited their grandparents to the school’s annual Grandparents Day and performed a musical program for them in the gym. The day also included a classroom presentation, art project, bowling and a visit to the book fair in the library.

C.H. Campbell Elementary School Principal Travis Lavery welcomed the grandparents to school.

“Good morning everyone.

I am honored to have you here with us today. Today you are going to see our amazing kiddos in action. This is a very special day, which we offer once a year. It is a big event. I’d like to thank Mr. Fay who has worked very hard with our second-grade students.

I’d also like to thank our secondgrade teachers who have worked hard to prepare a classroom program for you. We will begin with our Veterans Day-themed program. I hope you have a great time and I hope you enjoy our program,” Lavery said The second-graders began

their program by leading the audience in singing “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Next, a skit was performed by a group students, about what a veteran is and conducting research and learning about Veterans Day for a school project.

The second-graders took the stage again and led the audience in singing “God Bless America.”

The students then performed “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” The students also acted as narrators, giving the audience facts about and the history of Veterans Day. To honor grandparents in the audience who were veterans, the second-graders performed “Salute to Armed Forces,” during which veterans were asked to stand during their branch’s song, to resounding applause.

In their final performance, and to give a special thank you to all veterans, the students sang “Proud To Be An American,” to a standing ovation.

“Didn’t they do an amazing job, everybody? And now we will dismiss you to enjoy the rest of your Grandparents Day,” Lavery said.

After the program, the students and their grandparents went back to their classrooms, or to the art room for an art project or to the book fair or stayed in the

gym for a round of bowling. At the appointed time, the classes rotated places so everyone could visit each activity.

In the art room, art teacher Diane Leonard gave a short presentation on hand-based learning.

She then read a poem, which she also passed out to the students and their grandparents and asked them to decorate the page together in any way they chose

with colored pencils, markers and crayons.

In honor of Grandparents Day, the teachers and students also set up the Museum of Life Long Ago, which contained artifacts which were used prior to 1980.

On display were a rotary phone, vinyl records, a coffee grinder, a Polaroid camera, an ice cube tray, cassette tapes and VHS tapes.

The annual Andy Skrobola Memorial Food Drive is underway now. The Canfield Lions Club and its associated LEOS organization based at Canfield High School, Knights of Columbus Council 11369, the Canfield Rotary Club and Canfield Community Care Net combine for this annual Thanksgiving and Christmas effort to feed 50-80 local families. The groups thank to the hundreds of city and township residents who filled grocery bags and left them on their porches or brought them to their local Cardinal Joint Fire District station. Lions Club and LEOS members collected the bags from porches. They are also appreciative of the monetary donations. Canfield residents can continue to provide food and funding for this effort. Fill up a grocery bag and drop it off at the door of a nearby fire station. Financial contributions can be made through the Canfield Lions Club; send your check to Phil Bova, 311 Chapel Lane, Canfield, OH 44406. Needed items are peanut butter, cereal, canned fruit and vegetables, soup, pasta, instant potatoes, jello, pudding, cake mixes, spaghetti sauce, rice, tuna, stuffing, coffee, sugar, flour, baby food, diapers, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Callia Barwick, a Mahoning County 4-H youth from Canfield, was invited to attend the U.S. Department of Education’s Listening Session on Opioid Prevention in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 24. Barwick is a member of the Ohio 4-H Health Heroes whose mission is to promote healthy living in their communities. She was able to explain and present her Stuffed Animal Project, which she created in Mahoning County. Barwick collected new and slightly used stuffed animals which were given to area police departments for the officers to give to children whose parents and/or guardians are being taken into custody. The Michael Kusalaba library hosted its first Halloween celebration with its Monster Mash Halloween Party on Oct. 29.

Librarian assistant Amelia Dale created the program, stating that its the first and only Halloween themed event the library has planned for its first year open.

“We opened on Valentines day,” Dale said. “I know Halloween programs are popular at all the libraries.”

The event featured a passport with six different activities for children to do, getting a stamp at Neighbors | Jessica Harker each one once it is complete.

Retired educators to meet in December The Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on Dec. 12 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. As team captain, he is a person of high caliber, which is one of the most important things. This is also a credit to his family. He didn’t do this alone. He said it was his dream to go to OSU, and I am so glad his dream is coming true,” Pitts said.

Stein then addressed the crowd.

“First, I’d like to thank God and my mom and dad. They always pushed me to do my best.

I’d also like to thank my sisters and coaches for always pushing me. Everyone had my best interests in mind. Thank you,” Stein said.

Canfield High School senior lacrosse player Brennen Klingensmith formally announced his intention to continue his academic and lacrosse career at Walsh University at a National Letter of Intent signing ceremony at the high school on Nov. 15.

He is the son of Jim and Amy Klingensmith.

Head lacrosse coach Gordon Byrne welcomed the crowd of students, faculty and staff to the signing.

“It is a great honor to introduce Brennen. He is the first lacrosse player to sign with a college since the inception of the program here at Canfield three years ago.

He and his family have been a big asset to the program. He is a three-year letter winner and our leading scorer. He is a strong, talented athlete and I look forward to coaching him again this com-

ing year. We wish him luck as he completes his high school career and transitions to the next step in his career at Walsh,” Byrne said.

Canfield High School Principal Mike Moldovan then addressed the crowd.

“Lacrosse is a relatively new sport here in Canfield. It has become an important sport, but more important is the kind of young man Brennen is. He is a wonderful human being, which is a credit to him and his family,” Moldovan said.

Klingensmith then took the stage to say a few words.

“First and foremost, I want to thank everyone for coming out today. To my family, friends, coaches and teammates, I would not be here without you. To Mr. Cooper, who couldn’t be here today, I’d like everyone to give him a round of applause. And to the coaches from Walsh, thank you for giving me this opportunity,” Klingensmith said.

John and Marilyn Berchik of Austintown were honored recently with a surprise party at Mastropietro Winery in Berlin Center on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.

The celebration was hosted by the couple’s children, Stephen (Michelle) Berchik and Lisa DeSalvo.

Four grandchildren, Shaina (Jimmy) Kennehan, Stephen Berchik and Marisa and Nicholas DeSalvo complete their family.

Mr. Berchik, a retiree from General Motors Corp., married the former Marilyn Hudak on Sept. 14, 1968, at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Youngstown.

The couple are members of St. Youngstown.

Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Molaskey of Poland recently were honored for their 50th wedding anniversary during a dinner, surrounded by their family, at the Springfield Grille in Boardman.

Mr. Molaskey married the former Phyllis Brooks on Oct.5, 1968, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Knoxville, Tenn.

Mrs. Molaskey retired from St. Paul Child Care Center in 2008 and is a member of the Dogwood Garden Club. to 1968.
