Robinwood Lane honors veterans with concert By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Fourth-grade students at Robinwood Lane Elementary performed a patriotic concert in their cafeteria on Nov. 10, the day before Veterans Day. The school invited parents of the students and veterans in the community to the event. The rest of the school came to the cafeteria and sat and watched the performance. “We try to create and understanding of the history of the nation and those who have fought for our freedoms,“ said principal Donald Robinson. He also said that having the veterans there shows the students the people who made our country stay free. Music teacher Robert Pavalko

prepared the students for the event by giving them access to Google Docs with the music in them. They occasionally had extra music classes for the event. He also spent portions of classes talking to them about veterans and Veterans Day. The concert opened with “The Star Spangled Banner.“ Students came up to the microphone throughout the performance to read introductions to songs or give history on Veterans Day. The group sang “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee“ by Samuel Francis Smith and “This Land is Your Land“ by Woody Guthrie. Pavalko played a video from YouTube following those songs. The video commemorated and thanked our veterans for their service.

Neighbors | Zack Shively

Robinwood Lane Elementary fourth-grade students lined the hallways after their concert to clap and cheer for the veterans that came to their concert. The school held the event to honor the veterans.

Pavalko ended the event with “Proud of Our Veterans“ and “Thankful for the U.S.A.“ After the concert ended, the fourth-

graders lined the hallway toward the exit and clapped for the veterans as the exited the building.

Weekly square dance Lanterman’s Mill hosts family bash lessons to begin Jan. 9 By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the uniquely American art form of square dancing, will begin a second session of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be Jan. 9 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the Basic Square Dance Program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April and there is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. The Friendly Squares also sponsors monthly dances with

alternating dances, or tips, for new dancers to practice their skills as well as tips for more experienced dancers. All the lessons and monthly dances take place at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. To sign up for lessons or for additional information, contact Gene or Frankie Hammond at 330-506-3370. Square dancing is an activity that can be enjoyed by any age group as evidenced by the multi-generational families of grandparents, children and grandchildren within the Friendly Squares. Square dancing offers an excellent opportunity to exercise the mind and body while having fun and shaking off the winter blues.

Mill Creek Metroparks threw a Halloween party for families inside Lanterman’s Mill on Oct. 21. Carol Vigorito, Recreation and Education Director with the Metroparks, organized the “Family Halloween Bash at the Old Mill“ event. She had something to do on all three levels of the mill. “We wanted to have a safe, fun family event,“ said Vigorito, who continued to say that the mill gave them a “phenomenal place” to have the party. In the basement, children played games like ring toss and a ball bounce game. The games had a Halloween theme, so the ring toss was a spider ring toss. Families could also decorate and take home small pumpkins provided by the park. The ground floor had snacks and drinks for the families. The park placed out apples, carrots, cookies, chips and punch. They also had two guessing games where children guessed the weight of a large pumpkin and how many pieces of candy were

in a jar. The top floor included the main party. They had a DJ, limbo, dance party and competitions. The competitions were a costume contest and mummy wrap up contest where families competed to quickly wrap their children in toilet paper. They also had a searching competition where the children searched on each floor to find cut outs of black cats placed through-

out the mill by the park staff. The children tallied the number of cut outs and handed their answers to the staff. The park has thrown the Family Halloween Bash at the Old Mill for four consecutive years. The event brought in 30 people the first year, but it has grown in popularity as it brought in 200 people this year. They gathered seven staff members and ten volunteers to help run the event.

Seventh grade celebrates history of Greece with Olympic Games by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Boardman Glenwood Junior High threw a Greek Olympic Games enrichment activity on Oct. 20 to connect the students’ learning to a fun event. The school has more than 320 seventh-grade students and every one of them participated in one of the 21 possible events. The seventh-grade social studies teachers organized and ran the event with help from other seventh-grade teachers. The students learned about the mythology, philosophy, art and government of Ancient Greece in their studies prior to the events. Some teachers dressed in togas for the event, complete with a laurel wreath. The classes have different teaching teams, and the teachers named their teams after Greek city-states for the event. The four teams were Syracuse, Sparta, Athens and Thebes. Students carried craft paper torches to the center of the school’s gymnasium to “light“ the Olympic flame to start the games. The teachers organized the event to have multiple games run at the same time. They offered events such as sprints and hula-hooping contests. Other events were made to resemble the ancient games,

day at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. For more information, ca ll t he loca l Gamblers Anonymous hotline at 330-505-5060.

such as chariot races, which had students on square scooter boards racing in a circle, and a javelin throwing contest, which had a javelin constructed of a pool noodle. They also had a math game that students could compete in. After the events, the winners got trophies donated to the school by Jamie’s Dance Force. The teachers tallied how many winners from each city-state won, and the winning city-state celebrated.

Four students gave an olive seed to eighth-grade science teacher Scott Lenhart, their “god of science” for the event. Lenhart planted the seed in the school’s courtyard garden. The school began doing the event in 2010, but could not do it last year because the school could not accommodate in the rise in the number of students with the program they had previously used. The teachers added more events for this year’s games.

For every $1 or non-perishable food item donated, community members will receive one entry into the Chinese Auction with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Second Harvest Foodbank. Some of the items to be raffled off include, an autographed Chris Young guitar, Private Event lighting package valued at $1,500, concert tickets and gift baskets. The event also includes audio and lighting demos and an Ask a Pro segment in addition to giveaways and refreshments. “We are grateful to Forty Two Event Production for selecting the Food Bank to benefit from this community event,” said Michael Iberis, executive director, Second Harvest Food Bank. “The funds raised and food collected will go a long way, especially during the winter months when food pantries and soup kitchens experience longer food lines.” Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, a member of Feeding America, provides food to those in need in the tri-county area through 148 programs provided by hunger-relief organizations, which include church pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, shelters for battered women and after-school programs. Subaru gifts Boardman’s science department with books By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Subaru gave 150 award-winning books to the science department at Boardman schools on Oct. 4. The whole science department, from kindergarten to high school sciences, received books through the donations. These donations come from Subaru’s national “Subaru Loves Learning“ program. Rob Fellman, owner of Boardman Subaru, donated the books to the school because he wants his company to do right and give back to the community as much as possible. He explained that helping the community is a part of his business model. Eighth-grade science teach-

ers Scott Lenhart and Laura Frost chose the books from a list from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The AAAS worked with Subaru to bring this program to schools. The Boardman science department often applies for and receives grants and donations similar to book donations. The department tries to find ways to constantly improve. Since 2015, the department has garnered $26,000 in grant funding, including a $16,000 grant from the EPA for a composting system. They also have gotten funding for hydroponic and aquaponic gardens that the science department gives to the school cafeteria for salads and sandwiches.
