Man Up Mahoning Valley, NEO Urology, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley and Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church will provide free prostate cancer screenings Dec. 1 for men 40-years-old and older. Screenings consist of a digital rectal exam and prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood draw and will take place 5-7 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church, located at 1812 Oak Hill Ave. Dinner will be provided to all men taking part. This event is open to the public but registration is required. Chili cook off The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting its annual Ray Dudik Memorial Chili Cook-off on Nov. 28. This indoor event will be before and during the Ohio State against Michigan college football game. The public is invited to this event in the club’s indoor hall at 1735 W. Gift wrapping fundraiser The Friends of Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will be doing gift wrapping at the Boardman Barnes and Noble throughout the day on Dec. 4. There will be a special “Polar Express” story time that evening. Purchases made at Barnes and Noble that day will benefit the Friends of the PLYMC. Fourth-graders serve up coffee and poetry

The fourth-graders at Robinwood Lane Elementary school hosted a Coffee Poetry reading on Nov. 13 for their parents and other guests.

This was the first time Robinwood Lane Elementary hosted an event like this after getting the suggestion from a new student.

The fourth-graders spent 6-7 weeks working on their own poetry collection, which is a common core standard in the fourth grade.

“We try to make poetry fun for the students. We learned stanzas, haikus, illiterations, biopoems and so many more,” Jan Zorman, the teacher who put on this event, said.

The Daily Grind Cafe on Market Street was more than happy to supply coffee and snacks for the guests attending this event.

When the guests arrived, they grabbed their coffee and snacks then sat in their seats which were placed in a circle around the children. The children sat on the floor in a circle and each took a turn sitting in the chair in the middle and rotating around so everyone could see them while they read two of the poems they

wrote. Some students even had their poems published in The Vindicator.

At the completion of each poem, guests snapped their fingers, instead of clapping, to applaud the students. Most of the poems read were Halloweenand Thanksgiving-themed.

The students had the opportunity to read a third poem after all the students read their first two.

“I had a lot of fun. We spent a lot of time working on our poems. We learned a lot of stuff,” Emily Yurko, a student, said.

Boardman High School’s Spanish I and II classes celebrated the Spanish holiday El Dia De Los Muertos, or The Day of the Dead, earlier this month. The students, led by teachers Jadue and Flood, expanded both their own knowledge of the event as well as introduced the holiday to the students of BHS by using decorations common in the cultural celebration. The classes decorated the main hallway with brightly colored alters, which was intended to resemble what an actual Mexican graveyard would look like during the celebration. These alters each represented a lost loved one, and contained “ofrendas” or offers of items that the deceased enjoyed while alive. Tradition says that the spirits enjoy their “ofrendas” while they return to earth to visit their families and friends.

Cardinal Mooney High School honored the six Cardinal Mooney alumni killed in Vietnam, as well as all veterans, at a Veteran’s Day assembly Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. in the school gymnasium.

“It’s important for students to understand and to thank the veterans who served, and still serve, and understand the ultimate sacrifice they make,” said Janet Cadman, event coordinator.

Families of the six alumni killed in Vietnam were presented a plaque to commemorate their sacrifice. Miss Eileen Bacha, a retired Mooney English teacher, designed and presented the plaques. These plaques will be displayed prominently in the halls of Cardinal Mooney.

A not her Mooney retiree, alumnus and veteran, Al Williamson, was the guest speaker.

Father Gerald DeLucia gave a blessing to all veterans from WWII to Afghanistan.

Veterans attending the ceremony were recognized according to military branch.

“This is a good thing because those veterans sacrificed so much and were willing to give their lives for the greater good,” said Joe Kelty, senior, whose grandfather and uncle served in the Navy and whose cousin Jenny Long currently serves in

Participants of the Color Your World event at the Poland library colored their pictures using several different art supplies. The coloring sheets, crayons, markers and pencils were all provided by the Poland library.

Poland library lets you color your stress away

The Poland library passed out coloring sheets, colored pencils, crayons and markers during the Color You World event on Nov. 4.

Teens and adults came to this event for a chance to rela x while coloring and listening to soothing music. To keep in the theme of coloring, colorful snacks were provided. Guests could choose from Skittles, Starbursts and rainbow M&M cookies, along with lemonade and water to drink.

Barb Smith, the librarian supervisor, led the event after having the idea suggested by her sister and niece. She thought it would be a good way for people to rel ieve stress.

“This event is relaxing and a good way to meet people. The library likes to try and have diverse activities for many people to enjoy,” said Smith.

One of the videos that Smith

showed the guests was about 3-D coloring. There are now sma r tphone apps t hat one can download to use with certain coloring books. When the phone scans over the book the images appear to pop out of the page. Some brands that offer these 3-D coloring options are Popar, Disney, Quiver and Crayola.

Smith also tries to make her classes a bit informative.

“I tr y to give ever ybody a little bit of history, like about crayons and the first coloring book,” she said.

Showing the history of the first coloring supplies gives people an idea of how far the coloring world has come. Art started from first drawing on a flat surface to now being able to use different 3-D art mechanisms.

This event is offered once a month at the Poland library.

Color ing tools, sheets a nd snacks will always be provided, but anyone is more than welcome to bring their own supplies.

Happily Ever After Vow renewal, dinner mark Goricki’s 50th Mr. and Mrs. Michael Goricki of Roswell, formerly of Boardman, observed their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their marriage vows Oct. 3 at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Johns Creek, Ga. A dinner celebration will take place Oct. 23 at Provino’s Italian Restaurant in Roswell.

The former Diane Toriello and Mr. Goricki were married Oct. 16, 1965, at St. Nicholas Church in Youngstown.

Hosting the celebration will be their children and spouses, Michael and Deborah Goricki of Alpharetta, Ga.; Renee and David Jones of Cumming, Ga.; and Raymond and Sara Goricki of Brentwood, Tenn.

The family circle includes six grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Goricki are members of St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church, Roswell.

Mrs. Goricki is a member of Red Hat Society; Alta, a craft group; and plays caager with Big Lots in Roswell. He served in nasta and Bonko.

Her husband retired as a district man- the National Guard.

Mass and family event mark 50th for Pepperneys Mr. and Mrs. Jim Pepperney of Poland celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary during a Mass at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown with Bishop George V. Murry as celebrant.

A family dinner was at Caffe Capri in Boardman with their children and spouses, Jim and Christy Pepperney of Poland, Jeff and Kristen Pepperney of Powell, Ohio, and Jennifer and John Matyasovsky of New Wilmington, Pa., and seven grandchildren, Lauren, A.J. and Jack Pepperney, Luke and Mark Pepperney and Mary and Will Matyasovsky.

The former Jeanne A. Holley and Mr. Pepperney were married May 22, 1965, at St. Dominic Church in Youngstown.

Mrs. Pepperney taught at Boardman and Lordstown high schools. She graduated cum laude from Youngstown State University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education.

She teaches part time with the ABLE Program in Youngstown City Schools.

Mr. Pepperney retired from JacksonMilton Local Schools after 28 years in the vocation education program and as head in Youngstown. basketball and baseball coach. He also He graduated with bachelor’s and mastaught five years at Ursuline High School ter’s degrees from YSU.

Charles and Sally Palumbo of Berlin Center are parents of the bride. The groom is the son of Stephanie and Vaughn Roloff of Canfield, and the late Raymond Ludwiczak.

The bride wore a gown with a sweetheart neckline and charmeuse skirt. The ensemble also featured beaded spaghetti straps and a bodice with beaded embroidery and a low back with a tulle train and sequin lace appliques.

The bride’s cousins, Caitlin Hjerpe and Tina White, were maid and matron of honor, respectively. Bridesmaids were Sissy Stubbs; Colleen Kennehan; Megan Hardinger; Dana Aburahma; Miranda Ormiston; and the bride’s sisters-in-law, Katie and Carrie Palumbo. The bride’s niece, Lexi Palumbo, was flower girl.

The groom’s brother, RJ Ludwiczak, and Jerod Barker shared duties of best man.

Groomsmen were Jake Barker; the bride’s brothers, Dean and Darin Palumbo; Ben Pecchia; the groom’s cousin, Al Harakal; Matt Hubbs; and Andrew DeJulio. The bride’s nephew, Charlie Palumbo, was a

junior groomsman. The bride’s nephew, Justin Palumbo, was ring bearer, and the bride’s cousin, Vito Palumbo, and bride’s uncle, John Hjerpe, were ushers.

The bride is attending Youngstown State University, where she is studying dietetics.

Her husband earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Kent State University. He is a staff registered nurse at Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman.

The newlyweds took a wedding trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica, and live in Berlin Center.
