It’s never too early to teach children about Veterans Day, and what military service means. All four classes at Poland North Preschool, 56 3-5 year-olds spent time on Nov. 11 learning all about the United States Air Force from invited guest and Air Force Veteran James Jones. The children marched around the gymnasium as they listened to patriotic music. They recited the Pledge of Allegiance with Jones and then they were able to ask him questions about his life in the military. They finished the morning, with a group picture, with Veteran Jones in the middle of all the students.

Poland ‘big dogs’ lead the ‘little dogs’ By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Pola nd Nor t h E lementar y School welcomed high schoolers from Poland Seminary High School to help the pre-k students on Nov. 12 for the Big Dog-Little Dog program. The pre-k students of North Elementary waited anxiously in the library for the high school st udent s to a r r ive. They read books a nd sa ng Thanksgiving songs to help pass the time before the big dogs got there. A few high schoolers would le a v e d u r i n g t h e i r s t u d y hall period and head over to Nort h Elementa r y. The big dogs enjoy being able to leave their own school and assist the teachers at the elementary school with whatever is needed. It gives both the high school students and elementary students a break from their regular schedule and switch their days up a little. “The high schoolers help out with whatever is needed. If the students are working on a project, they help the little dogs with the project. They read stories and are very will-

ing to help out whenever they a re needed,” Mrs. Bucci, a teacher at the school, said. The high schoolers that are chosen to participate are ones who demonstrate leadership and show good characteristics. PSHS chooses students that they believe will leave a good, lasting impact on the elementary school students. When the high school students arrived, the children bec a me so exc ited to see someone new and bombarded t he high schoolers w it h severa l questions to get to know them. The Big Dog-Little Dog progra m is new to t he Pola nd school district starting just this year and so far has been successful. If Cremation is your choice...

The f irst t ime t his event happened was on Sept. 18 and the high schoolers have started to visit on a regular basis

The children didn’t get too messy, though, as they covered a hand in paint and then pressed it against a paper plate. Then all the decorating started, with construction paper feathers and bright orange legs. The plates now decorate the halls of the old North Elementary building, where the After School Program is now located.

Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a Shop in the Gardens weekend event Nov. 6, 7 and 8. A special preview night was available only for the members on Nov. 5. The Shop in the Gardens Holiday Open House is to help raise funds for the Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens. Nov. 5 was an invitation only event extended to members who had the opportunity to get 20 percent off all items in the shop. There were complimentary wine and appetizers served, along with gift wrap for the purchases. A chance to win a Holiday Garden Tour trip for two and a chance to win a personalized holiday decor package for every $25 spent at the gift shop were available to those members who came in to shop. The weekend event was extended to the general public who may be interested in becoming members of the Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens. Any who took advantage of this extension were able to learn more about becoming a member while having the opportunity to do personal shopping as well. Being a member offers people the chance to help the gardens grow and flourish like they were intended to. There are many benefits to becoming a member, which the shoppers learned while at Fellows Riverside Gardens. All shoppers, members and non-members, throughout the weekend were able to receive 20 percent off holiday items. The items in the Shop in the Gardens are unique gifts, garden accessories, home decor and various holiday purchases. Although the gift shop is open all year round, this special sale happens annually and is the main fundraiser for the Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Poland Union Elementary School donated close to $850 to the Ohio Christmas Tree Association via Pioneer Trails Tree Farm. The money will help fund Operation Evergreen, which sends trees to troops serving overseas. Poland Union students collected spare change on two Fridays in October as part of the PTOs Give Back program. They were matched penny for penny by Covelli Enterprises. In all, a check for close to $1,700 was handed over to Pioneer Trails Tree Farm owner Mary Jan Perdulla. Pioneer is one of the many tree farms in Ohio that provides trees for Operation Evergreen. Operation Evergreen has been sending trees to our troops since the mid 1990s. This year approximately 100 Ohio homegrown trees are headed for military bases in Kuwait. The goal is for the trees to arrive around Thanksgiving. Elementary students at Union also made holiday ornaments to accompany the trees with the help of PTO volunteers. The students were excited to send the decorations along, as well.
