Holiday shopping in the gardens By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a Shop in the Gardens weekend event Nov. 6, 7 and 8. A special preview night was available for the members only on Nov. 5. The Shop in the Gardens Holiday Open House is to help raise funds for the Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens. Nov. 5 was an invitation only event ex-

tended to members who had the opportunity to get 20 percent off all items in the shop. There were complimentary wine and appetizers served, along with gift wrap for the purchases. A chance to win a Holiday Garden Tour trip for two and a chance to win a personalized holiday decor package for every $25 spent at the gift shop were available to those members who came in to shop.

The weekend event was extended to the general public who may be interested in becoming members of the Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens. Anyone who took advantage of this extension was able to learn more about becoming a member while having the opportunity to do personal shopping. Being a member offers people the chance to help the gardens grow and flourish like they were

intended to. There are many benefits to becoming a member, which the shoppers learned while at Fellows Riverside Gardens. All shoppers, members and non-members, throughout the weekend were able to receive 20 percent off holiday items. The

items in the Shop in the Gardens are unique gifts, garden accessories, home decor and various holiday purchases. Although the gift shop is open all year round, this special sale happens annually and is the main fundraiser for the Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Children and their caregivers work on creating their own Snoopy on a plate after watching the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving story at the Austintown library. A variety of crafts were available for the children to create throughout the program.

Children experience real life Charlie Brown Thanksgiving By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

To get ready for Thanksgiving, the Austintown library hosted a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving event for children of all ages on Nov. 14. The event started out with the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving movie-book. Children and their caregivers were given Snoopy ears to wear throughout the event. Several crafts, activities, food and a photobooth were all available to the children to use after the movie was over. Librarians Ashley Potopovich and Lindsay Platt led the event. “It took a couple hours to put together,” Platt said. “It was the first time Ashley and I did it. We had to make sure there was a lot because we were hoping for a big crowd.” There was a large crowd, but there were plenty of activities for each child to occupy themselves and keep busy. The food supplied was truly a Charlie Brown feast. The children were able to choose from pretzels, jelly beans, toast, ice cream and popcorn to eat, just like Charlie Brown and his friends. One of the activities was called Charlie Brown’s Mailbox, which allowed the children to color a picture for Charlie Brown and put it in his mailbox because Charlie Brown never gets mail. The children who placed a picture in his mailbox can stop back at the Austintown library and check the mailbox to see if they got a response from Charlie Brown himself.

show. The profits from the craft show are given back to the students for field trips and other finances. The science pavilion was built using the money from the craft show, and it took nearly four years to gather the money needed to fund it. November. Many of the vendors hear about the craft show through word of mouth and from attending the previous shows. There are so many vendors wanting to attend the event that a waiting list is created and if one vendor opts out, the first person on the waiting list is called. They are able to show up to the middle school at 8 a.m. to set up their tables. The craft show is from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., and people from all over the area attend the event.

The Austintown Intermediate School Cross Categorical Class has their own table to raise funds for their own field trips and crafts that will help the students with their life skills. This year the students made rock salt snowman bottles. Amy Tibolla and Brittney Inglis sat at the Cross Categorical Class table with some of the students trying to sell their rock salt snowmen. “We have been saving the coffee creamer bottles for about one year and have more than 400 pounds of salt,” said Tibolla. A Chinese auction also took place, along with a 50/50 raffle.

Children at the Gotta Move Storytime on Nov. 12 at the Austintown library participated in the leaf dance. The children pretended they were leaves falling from a tree while singing along with the librarian to a song about leaves.

Children’s storytime involves moving and grooving By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Austintown library hosted its Gotta Move Storytime event on Nov. 12. Librarian, Kathe Orr, led the storytime with several songs, stories and a few books. The children who attended the event ranged from the ages of 2 to 5. They enjoyed being able to meet other children their age and engage in different types of activities each storytime they attend. After a couple books were read, sca r ves were passed around, and the children were able to move and dance along

to a song with their different colored scarves. After playing with scarves, the children counted leaves and then acted like leaves falling from the trees as they sang a song. The last activity Orr had for the children even got some of the adults involved. To cool down and relax, the children did t he pa rachute activ it y where the adults would move the giant, rainbow parachute up and down in the air. The children loved this activity and laughed every time the parachute would come down to them while they sat on the floor.

“We got a new robot book to read at the end and change things up, but the kids didn’t want to switch over from their usual ending story, ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It.’ They like to keep some things the same,” said Orr. As the children left storytime, they crawled through a tunnel while Orr blew bubbles at the end of the tunnel for the children to pop on their way out. The tunnel is a newer object that the Austintown library has introduced to their storytimes and the librarians have found it to be one of the children’s favorite things.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A Gamblers Anonymous meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Cornersburg. Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about one and a half hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
