Thirty-two ladies from the Evangel Baptist Church enjoyed their annual Women’s Retreat at the Rock of Ages Retreat Center, a beautiful beachfront stone home in Lakeside, just a few blocks from the Marblehead Lighthouse. Their traditional silent auction raised $490, which will benefit the Pregnancy Help Center in Youngstown. This year’s guest speaker, Roshni D’Souza-Di Stefano, prayer coordinator for the Pregnany Health Center, inspired and encouraged the ladies to put on the “Armor of God” as explained in the Book of Ephesians.

Teens create sweet sushi at Boardman library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Boardman library hosted a candy sushi event for teens in grades 9-12. Librarian Allison Graff put out several different types of candy for the teens to use to create their own sushi. Ever y mont h t he Boa rdman librar y hosts different events for people of all ages. The library tries to separate the activities into groups such as: babies, toddlers, children, tweens, teens and adults. There were Rice Krispies Treats to use as the outside of the sushi, licorice, Swedish Fish, gummy worms, and frosting to hold it together and a fruit roll up to wrap everything up in. The teen participants used all the different ingredients to make different kinds of sushi. One of the boys called his candy sushi a candy “burrito” because it was all of the candy smashed into a giant rolled up Rice Krispies Treat. The other teens took their time and created sushi that looked like different kinds of real sushi someone could order from a restaurant. “I like getting to hang out with the teens. It’s fun trying to show the library is more than people just shushing them,”

He explained there are several experiments and he talked about each one before he started. There were a variety of different experiments that Yingling performed for the children and other guests. His candy experiments ranged from starlight mints and how their red stripes form a red swirl in the water, to testing which candy, out of Tootsie Rolls, Laffy Taffy and Starbursts, were the most sticky. Third-grade students gives special performance for veterans By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Third-grade students at West Boulevard Elementary put on a special performance for Veterans Day on Nov. 11. Three thirdgrade teachers were in charge of putting on the production. Leah Mohl, one of the teachers, said this was her first time working with the students and their performance, but said the students do this every year. “I enjoy seeing the performance. It’s nice to see all of the hard work and practice that the students put in to the perfo-
mance pay off,” Mohl said. The students wore white shirts with blue and red sashes around their bodies. There were also a few of the boys who wore their Boy Scout uniforms. The first song the students sang was the national anthem, followed by five other songs. Four of the third-grade students sang a solo during the last song of the production called “Thank you, Soldiers.” The students showed a military appreciation video that contained clips and pictures of soldiers on tour and coming home. When the video was over, one final song ended the perfor-
mance. Every year the third-grade students put on a performance and there is always a nice turn out of guests who come and watch the show. Veterans attended and even received some gifts from a few of the students. One of the third-graders colored several pictures and gave them to one of the veterans who attended. The third-grade performance followed a Veterans Day luncheon that also took place at West Boulevard Elementary. The families and other guests also attended the event to enjoy the show.
