Racing toward a cure More than 1.6 million Americans suffer from Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. Many individuals with these diseases, jointly known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD, suffer in silence due to potential embarrassment and alienation. Chris Thomas has suffered with ulcerative colitis since he was 23 years old and knows how horrible this disease can be. Thomas will complete the Ironman Arizona 70.3 on Oct. 16, 2016, to raise funds and awareness for research leading to improved treatment options and cures for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Annual bonfire prepares residents for Battle of 224 By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
In order to get students, faculty and the Canfield community fired up before the Canfield High School football team played their arch-rivals, the Poland Bulldogs, the Canfield Local School District hosted its annual Community Bonfire Oct. 29. To pump up the crowd for the Battle of 224, each grade level of football players was recognized and introduced individually to the large, cheering crowd. Each cheerleading squad was also introduced and fired up the crowd with a cheer and a dance. The Canfield High School Cardinal Pride Drumline performed and brought the crowd to a deafening level of cheers. After the senior football players were introduced, the four senior team captains said a few words and thanked the students and the community for all their support this season and promised to bring home a win from Poland. The captains then did a senior pumpkin smash, much to the delight of the crowd. Volunteers were then asked to participate in a hot dog eating contest, with several students trying their best to beat the previous record. As a show of true school spirit, before the bonfire was lit, the students came together and sang the Canfield High School alma mater. The evening culminated as the bonfire was lit and the students moved to the bonfire area and cheered and chanted as a wooden bulldog was added to the top of the fire, and quickly went up in flames.

Canfield High School is the home of Mrs. Duda, the real-life Wonder Woman, who shared her story with a few of the classes at Canfield Village Middle School. “Everyone’s story matters” is a recurring theme in Sabrina Eaton’s class. The class will hear stories all year from everyday people in the community. Eaton said Duda is her personal hero, so she was invited to speak first. Duda, who was born with a birth defect, was forced to make an almost impossible decision last year. Duda made the decision to amputate her leg after being in horirble pain and consulting with many doctors. Three months after surgery, Duda can now walk without pain.
MCCTC clam bake Neighbors | Submitted
Students enrolled in the culinary program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center were able to show off their skills to the public when they hosted a clambake on Oct. 23. The fundraiser was held in the student-run restaurant, The Bistro, and raised more than $3,000 for their program. Culinary instructor Matt Putzier was beyond thrilled with the clambake and how his students performed. The money raised at the event is allowing the students in the culinary program to go on field trips they would have otherwise had to miss, as well as aid in their competition costs.

Poland library lets you color your stress away By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Poland library passed out coloring sheets, colored pencils, crayons and markers during the Color You World event on Nov. 4. Patrons came to this event for a chance to relax while coloring and listening to soothing music. To keep in the theme of coloring, colorful snacks were provided. Guests could choose from Skittles, Starbursts and rainbow M&M cookies, along with lemonade and water to drink. Barb Smith, the librarian supervisor, led the event after having the idea suggested by her sister and niece. She thought it would be a good way for people to relieve stress. “This event is relaxing and a good way to meet people. The library likes to try and have diverse activities for many people to enjoy,” said Smith. One of the videos that Smith showed the guests was about 3-D coloring. There are now smartphone apps that one can

download to use with certain coloring books. When the phone scans over the book the images appear to pop out of the page. Some brands that offer these 3-D coloring options are Popar, Disney, Quiver and Crayola. Smith also tries to make her classes a bit informative. “I try to give everybody a little bit of history, like about crayons and the first coloring book,” she said.
Showing the history of the first coloring supplies gives people an idea of how far the coloring world has come. Art started from first drawing on a flat surface to now being able to use different 3-D art mechanisms. This event is offered once a month at the Poland library. Coloring tools, sheets and snacks will always be provided, but anyone is more than welcome to bring their own supplies.
